Once again, the personality of Donald Trump , President of the United States, spoke out on the subject of tariffs, since according to newspaper reports, he stated on February 26 that the 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada could be postponed until April 2 ; however, this Thursday he reversed course and announced that the tariff measure remains in place for March 4 .

This morning, Trump posted a message through his Truth Social account , in which he clarified that on April 2 , reciprocal tariffs will go into effect . These are taxes levied on imported goods and which the United States government seeks to impose on its global trading partners, which are equal to the tariffs that foreign countries have imposed on American products.

In his message, he pointed out that drugs continue to arrive in the United States “at very high and unacceptable levels,” and assured that most of these substances are sent in the form of fentanyl.

In this regard, the US President stressed that the date of reciprocal tariffs of April 2 “will remain in full force and effect.”

In his post, he specified that until the distribution of drugs stops or is limited, tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will be implemented on March 4.

It should be recalled that on February 26, the US president announced during a press conference that the implementation of the 25% tariffs for Mexico and Canada would begin on April 2.

“Starting April 2, the tariffs go on. I was going to do it starting April 1, but I’m superstitious. The tariffs go on. Not all of them, but some of them. I think we’re going to see something incredible. They’ve taken advantage of us for a long time,” he said.

At that meeting, Howard Lutnick , the United States Secretary of Commerce, pointed out that Mexico and Canada were given a 30-day reprieve to demonstrate that they were successfully stopping the trafficking of fentanyl into the United States, as well as the passage of migrants, and “if they have done so,” then Trump will give them a pause or he will not do it.”

This case of the widespread collection of tariffs on Mexican products has been one of the themes that Trump has used since his first term as president of the United States.

He also used it during his most recent presidential campaign, and it gained strength when he was inaugurated on January 20 , since one of his first actions was to sign executive orders for the implementation of 25% tariffs on Mexico, its main commercial seller.

Faced with Trump’s indecision, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has attempted to stop the collection of tariffs and is seeking agreements with her US counterpart.

In this regard, at his morning press conference on February 26, he announced that there will be a meeting between Rogelio Ramírez de la O , head of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) , and Scott Bessent , secretary of the United States Department of the Treasury , to discuss various issues, such as the 25 percent tariff.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economy (SE) reported that Marcelo Ebrard , head of this department, traveled to Washington DC on Thursday to hold working meetings with his American counterparts, specifically with Jamieson Greer , United States Trade Representative, and Howard Lutnick , Secretary of Commerce of our northern neighbor.

Trump, Drugs are still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels. A large percentage of these Drugs, much of them in the form of Fentanyl, are made in, and supplied by, China. The families of the victims are devastated and, in many instances, virtually destroyed.
With the haughty and proud character that distinguishes him, Donald Trump entered the Capitol in Washington DC for the inauguration ceremony as the 47th President of the United States , provoking applause from his supporters, including the billionaire owner of the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, Elon Musk, which intensified with his speech with anti-immigrant measures and against Mexican drug cartels, promising Americans to return greatness to that country.

Among the first actions announced, as president of our northern neighbor, he said he would issue an emergency declaration to stop “the disastrous invasion of our country” and send troops to the southern border to end migration.

In other actions, he indicated that he will designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations , in order to restore peace in the United States and end the public health problem caused by fentanyl.

In that regard, he said he would use Law 1798, which allows the federal government to detain, deport or restrict foreigners from countries with which the United States is at war, to protect the American Union from “threats and invasions.”

On the economic front , he said he would restructure the trade system to benefit American workers and their families, which is why he would impose tariffs and taxes on other countries.

“We’re going to establish the Foreign Treasury Service to collect taxes and duties from other countries, which will provide a huge boost to our treasury from foreign sources, and soon the American dream will return like never before,” Trump said.

In his speech, Trump reiterated what he had promised in recent days, in the sense of changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America .” He also threatened to take back the Panama Canal, since the United States invested in its construction and it was wrongly given to that country.

He said that Panama broke an agreement they had with them and that they have charged high fees to American ships passing through there. He also indicated that China is operating the Panama Canal . “We gave it to Panama and not to China and we are going to get it back,” he stressed.

Participating in the XIX Annual Convention of the Mexican Institute of Foreign Trade Executives (IMECE) , Larry Rubin , president of the American Society of Mexico , said that drug trafficking, migration and trade will be the main issues in the relationship between our country and the United States.

At the conference The Mexico-United States of America relationship for the period 2024-2030. Investment and trade , he said that both countries will have a dynamic and intense agenda starting January 21, 2025 , which, he considered, will be for the best, since despite the threats of President-elect Donald Trump , there is a “brotherhood” between the two nations.

During his speech, Rubin explained that the United States’ policy has changed, and pointed out that the United States will not encourage left-wing governments, as is the case in Mexico, something that Trump has made clear in his policy against Venezuela and Cuba.

In that sense, he said that our country will not match the new US government in the ideological sense , which will be somewhat complex, since Trump won the House of Representatives and the Senate. .

Regarding the central issues on the bilateral agenda, he assured that the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) , which he considered will be a renegotiation, will have harsh episodes, since there could be tariffs for our country.

“Trump’s style is like a father scolding and the punishment is the tariff,” he stressed, and said that in light of this, the two countries must work together. “What is wanted is for Mexico to change the policy of ‘hugs, not bullets,’” he said.

Regarding migration, he indicated that there have also been no results, so Trump will apply pressure and if Mexico cooperates, he estimated, there will be positive repercussions.

Larry Rubin emphasized that the Mérida Plan should be resumed, since it was an important security mechanism that benefited our country when it was implemented.

The specialist recalled Donald Trump’s threats to eliminate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) , but understood that it was impossible because, among other reasons, the United States does not have the labor force it needs.

These issues cannot be resolved by our northern neighbor alone, which is why it needs Mexico’s support, he said, and estimated that the outlook for business is encouraging.

The trade relationship between Mexico and the United States is very important in the regional context, since according to the Ministry of Economy , as of the second quarter of 2024, the northern neighbor remains the main investment partner in the country , concentrating 44% of total flows , which add up to 13,717 million dollars .
