Twenty-two years ago, trade between Mexico and the United States was constantly growing. Logistics, however, operated with fragmentation, low visibility, and limitations in responding to demand. 

At that starting point , Zaro Transportation began , driven not by certainties, but by the need to organize, make efficient and provide reliability to a key operation in the cross-border crossing .  

Zaro started its engines with an objective that would mark its development: to provide certainty and reliability in cross-border transport, under an approach of closer support to the customer.

The beginning was modest. Four tractor-trailers and a small team. But from that point, the operation began to take shape with a logic of sustained growth. 

In 2009, the creation of RAM Trucking strengthened its presence in the United States. By 2012, the company had established itself as the number one carrier for LEGO, a milestone that reflected its operational capabilities in a demanding environment.  

In 2017, the team exceeded 500 employees and, in 2018, the adoption of a flat organizational structure, based on self-management teams, allowed for a more agile response to market needs. 

The operation continued to expand. In 2022, Zaro reached more than 20 million miles traveled , and in 2025 it strengthened its infrastructure with a new distribution center in Laredo, Texas, consolidating its position in one of the main hubs of cross-border trade. 

Anticipate the operation 

Over the years, market demands have also changed. It’s no longer just about moving cargo, but about doing so with greater control, less uncertainty, and the ability to anticipate future needs. 

Under that premise, the company is moving towards a predictive logistics model , where the use of data and technology allows for anticipating risks, optimizing transit times and improving decision-making.  

Its technological platform integrates real-time visibility, process automation, and access to critical shipment and delivery information, elements that directly impact the operational efficiency of its clients.  

This approach is based on an operation that combines constant monitoring, 24/7 attention and security standards in door-to-door services between Mexico and the United States .  

Added to this is an organizational structure designed to respond with specialization and speed, in an environment where every operational adjustment directly impacts the supply chain. 

The human element is also part of that equation. Investment in the development of operators remains a cornerstone of the operation, while the company incorporates sustainability criteria backed by certifications such as B Corp and EcoVadis  assessments  .  

Today, 22 years after its founding, Zaro’s scale reflects that evolution: more than 300 units in operation, more than 20,000 annual trips and coverage in more than 45 frequent destinations, with experience in more than 150 destinations in Mexico and the United States.  

The next stage is already underway. The focus remains on strengthening technological capabilities , expanding infrastructure, and consolidating a model where anticipation becomes a key operational element. 

Because at the Mexico-United States border crossing, where efficiency defines competitiveness, the difference is no longer just in moving cargo… but in understanding what comes before it happens.

Economic integration between Mexico and the United States isn’t limited to trade agreements or annual trade figures; it’s a daily reality along the border, where thousands of industries depend on a constant and precise flow of goods. Within this complex network, the Port of Brownsville— in southeast Texas—has become a strategic hub for northeastern Mexico, a point where manufacturing, logistics, and trade converge. For companies in Monterrey, Saltillo, Reynosa, and Matamoros, the Port of Brownsville isn’t just a destination, but an operational extension of their supply chains, a corridor that accelerates processes, reduces costs, and ensures regional competitiveness. This is no coincidence: nearly 90% of the port’s business is directly linked to Mexico, confirming the depth of this interdependence.

This deep integration, stronger than any political tension, is the focus of the conversation with William Dietrich, General Manager of the Port of Brownsville, and Ervey González, Business Development and Economic Development Associate. In an interview with T21, both emphasize that the binational ecosystem operates with an interdependent logic that cannot be halted by short-term debates. “We are a region, a highly integrated economy,” González states, underscoring that the production cycle between Brownsville and Mexico is a living example of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA): raw materials arrive at the port, are processed in Mexico, and return as finished goods to the United States or Canada.

Dietrich adds a dimension that rarely appears in federal discussions: the border as a shared community. “We don’t see Mexico as another country. For us, it’s part of our community ,” he says. What for many is a dividing line, for the inhabitants of this region is a continuous territory where social life and economic activity intertwine. This reality explains why the seaport operates as a binational agent, and why any political clash immediately impacts logistical efficiency.

SLOW BORDER, GROWING RISK

Despite this, Dietrich acknowledges that the relationship between Mexico and the United States is going through a period of stagnation. His concern points to a greater risk: that Asia will capitalize on these uncertainties and move forward in attracting investments that could otherwise be consolidated in North America. “The world is in an economic war, and if Asia comes to build its factories here, that money won’t go to our people,” he states. For him, the region has already demonstrated that cooperation works; what is lacking is ensuring that political decisions don’t disrupt this balance.

One of the areas where these tensions are most evident is at border crossings. Delays and duplicated processes generate losses in the millions and disrupt just-in-time operations. “These delays in supply chains are very costly,” González points out. For this reason, both insist on reviving the joint customs model, which has already worked on this border and is currently operating in other locations with positive results. “The door is open, but we have to move faster,” Dietrich emphasizes, noting that border efficiency is key to preventing the region from losing global competitiveness.

In light of Donald Trump’s return to his second term as President of the United States, Arturo Sarukhán, President of Sarukhán and Associates , warned of the critical challenges that the bilateral relationship will face, in which he notes that the first few years will be crucial, with immediate actions in trade, migration and security, including the imposition of tariffs, mass deportations and possible unilateral operations against fentanyl laboratories in Mexico.

Speaking at the 2025 Economic Outlook Seminar organized by the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) , Sarukhán stressed that the next four years will be critical, especially the first year, in which Trump will seek to measure the Mexican government’s response capacity through forceful actions.

As one of the main points to highlight, the specialist anticipated that the automotive and auto parts sector, as well as steel and aluminum, will be the first to face targeted tariffs , as part of a US reindustrialization strategy to repatriate investments.

According to Sarukhán, Mexico is not adequately prepared to face this challenge due to the lack of technical staff in the government following the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“Today, neither the Mexican private sector nor the government are understanding this challenge properly,” he said.

On the other hand, Trump could intensify deportations of undocumented migrants , sending thousands to Mexico every month, even from third countries, which could overwhelm the capacities of Mexican municipalities and border states.

“He’s not going to deport the 11.2 million undocumented immigrants, but he’s going to release five, 10 or 15 thousand a month,” he said.

Regarding security, Sarukhán said that Trump could pressure the Mexican government to accept joint operations against fentanyl laboratories.

If cooperation is not forthcoming, he warned of the possibility of unilateral actions by the United States, such as drone attacks on Mexican territory.

The Chinese threat and the USMCA

The growing Chinese manufacturing presence in Mexico is viewed with concern by the United States, especially in strategic sectors such as telecommunications, energy and lithium batteries .

In this regard, Sarukhán stressed the importance of working together with Washington to prevent this from derailing the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) in 2026.

“The Chinese manufacturing footprint in Mexico could be the Trojan Horse that contaminates the bilateral relationship,” he warned.

For this reason, Sarukhán presented a list of strategic actions that could help Mexico maintain a “healthy” relationship with its northern neighbor.

The expert mentioned that the country should not engage in public confrontations with Trump , in addition to rebuilding the capacities of the Mexican State, particularly in trade and migration.

On the other hand, Mexico must modernize its foreign policy and strengthen security cooperation and enhance diplomacy at the state level in the United States to strengthen alliances.

“If President Sheinbaum wants to avoid an earthquake in the bilateral relationship, she must make decisions that contravene even the legacies of the previous administration,” he said.
