In the document, the Government of Mexico mentioned that the planning and execution of projects in the railway and multimodal transport subsectors constitutes triggering policy strategies to boost the country’s regional development.

“In line with the 100 commitments for the 2nd floor of the transformation, SICT will direct its activities to achieve them, participating in the area of railway infrastructure, the technological development program for national development, supporting the development of the urban improvement program in the State of Mexico, the implementation of freight transport on the Mayan Train, the construction of three thousand km of new passenger train lines and strengthening freight transport by rail,” the document stated.

To this end, it designated 90,166 million pesos for provisions for the development of passenger and freight trains.

He said that the strengthening of the railway sector will continue with the passenger train projects to AIFA, Mexico-San Luis Potosí-Monterrey and Mexico-Querétaro-Guadalajara .

Likewise, he proposed 1,556.3 million pesos for the Mexico-Toluca train , and for the Suburban to AIFA , an allocation of 277.3 million pesos that will be used to complete the work and release the right of way.

Meanwhile, through the Ministry of Defense , 40,827 million pesos were allocated for the railway sector.

For the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, 25 thousand 12.6 million pesos were assigned , between own and fiscal resources, which will be used for various works such as the connection with Line Z, comprehensive rehabilitation, modernization of the Line FA track, among others.

The federal government stated that projects such as the Mayan Train will be consolidated and will be promoted so that it reaches Puerto Progreso and transports cargo, as well as the Interoceanic, so that works such as Line K will be completed, and collaboration will be provided for its connection with Guatemala.

41,507 million pesos were allocated for this system, of which 40,827 million pesos correspond to subsidies and tax support.

New train lines will also be built to the north and the Buenavista-AIFA and Pachuca-Tizayuca lines will be completed.

Work will be done on consolidating the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) , among others. Actions will also be implemented to strengthen Mexicana de Aviación.

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT ) requested that the studies carried out by freight railways for the implementation of passenger trains analyze the possibility of building a double track.

“It is part of what we are doing in the study, we have already finished it, but the idea is to review the funding part and if it will be done within the same infrastructure because there are already ideas that it could be in an independent, and in that We are going to work with the next administration and with the current one,” said Oscar Del Cueto, president of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico .

He explained that the double track would allow the passenger train to have an exclusive infrastructure to reach competitive speeds compared to other means of transportation.

In an interview with T21, he specified that the study that is already completed is for the Mexico-Querétaro route, although it will be delivered to the corresponding authorities once the SICT request is attached.

“We are about to deliver it with the speeds, number of stations, the potential location of the stations, the connectivity with the Suburban service, and now with this new scope that the Secretariat asked of us with an independent route,” he said.

Therefore, he specified that it will be during this week when they finish adjusting the study to later meet with the SICT authorities.

At the end of last May, the federal agency admitted that if passenger trains share the same track as freight railways, the offer of schedules, speeds and travel times will be limited.

“There will be sections in which the current train frequency and the track conditions and topography are appropriate, and there they could share. It is not healthy for two systems that have different speeds to coexist on the road,” said Manuel Gómez Parra, general director of Railway and Multimodal Development (DGDFM) of the SICT.

He mentioned that if these new railway systems are looking to travel at 100 kilometers per hour or above , in several cases it will be required to build new and specific tracks for the movement of passengers.

It should be remembered that at the time, Del Cueto announced that the Mexico-Querétaro train would have low demand although the busiest times would be from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. , would have two stations that would be in San Juan del Río and Querétaro, a third could be in Tula.

This new passenger train could be connected to the suburban train that goes from Buenavista to Cuautitlán , to make the connection with the center of Mexico City.

On the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo route, no demand has been identified so far .
