Industrial activity in 25 of Mexico’s 32 federal entities registered advances in April 2016 compared to last March, reported the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

According to the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity by Federal Entity (IMAIEF) —which provides information on the behavior of industrial activity in the states—, Oaxaca (11.8%), Mexico City (9.4%) and Quintana Roo (7.1%) were the states that showed the best performance in their  industrial activity  in the fourth month of the year on a monthly basis.

Guerrero, Sinaloa and Jalisco also reported growth in their industries compared to last month in real terms.

Conversely, the states that experienced the largest declines in April 2026 compared to March of this year were Morelos with a decrease of 3.2%, Guanajuato with a decline of 1.6%, and Sonora with a decrease of 1.4%.

In its annual measurement, the entities where industrial activity showed the greatest progress were Hidalgo, Nayarit and Oaxaca, with 20.6%, 15.3% and 12.5%, respectively, in April 2026.

The states with the largest year-on-year declines in their industrial activity were Quintana Roo with 23.1%, Morelos with 16.5%, and Campeche with 5.5%.

Activity by sector

In April 2026,  manufacturing industries  showed significant progress in Tabasco, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo and Colima at an annual rate.

In  construction , the largest increases occurred in Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, the State of Mexico, Guerrero, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Puebla and Colima.

The  mining sector  registered increases in the State of Mexico, Yucatan, Veracruz, Chiapas, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi.

In the  generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electricity, water supply and natural gas by pipeline to the end consumer,  the increases in Nayarit, Querétaro, Yucatán, Oaxaca, Baja California, Hidalgo, Veracruz and Campeche stood out at an annual rate.

The results of the IMAIEF in April 2026 show that some of the largest increases occurred outside of the states associated with the country’s manufacturing industrial corridors, while others remained stable despite a complex economic situation, which is only now beginning to show signs of recovery.

In that sense, in the second quarter of 2026 alone, the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 1.51% after a contraction of 0.62% in the first quarter of the year.

Due to widespread weakness across all sectors, but with a steeper downward trend in construction, Mexico’s industrial production fell 0.8% in May 2026 compared to April , when it registered a monthly increase of 2.1%, reported the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

This result represented the third decline so far this year in the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity (IMAI), which stood at a level of 101.6 last May.

According to the agency’s figures, all four components of the IMAI performed negatively in the fifth month of the year, with  construction  showing the largest drop at 3.7% compared to April 2026.

Generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electricity, water supply and natural gas by pipeline to the end consumer decreased by 0.5%; while mining  and manufacturing industries  each declined by 0.1% during May of this year on a monthly basis.

In its annual measurement, Mexican industrial activity also showed no encouraging figures, as it stagnated with no variation in the fifth month of 2026.

Within the indicator, the generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electricity, water supply and natural gas by pipeline to the final consumer was the one that fell the most (-0.8%) at an annual rate.

Construction and manufacturing industries registered a decline of 0.6% and 0.5%, respectively, in May of this year compared to the same month in 2025.

The only sector that showed a positive figure on an annual basis was mining, with a 4 percent increase in its activity.

The IMAI results reflect the weakness of the Mexican economy, which fell 0.6% in the first quarter of 2026. This is compounded by external factors, such as the conflict in the Middle East and the constant changes in the United States’ economic policy, which have increased the prices of various essential inputs for different industries.

After a monthly drop of 1.1% recorded last January, Mexican industrial activity rebounded 0.4% in February 2026 compared to the first month of the year, driven by manufacturing, mining and construction, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

With the increase recorded in the second month of the year, the country’s industrial activity is beginning to show signs of recovery, in the face of a complex economic scenario, marked by constant trade changes in the world.

According to figures from Inegi,  three of the four components of the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity (IMAI) had a positive performance last February , with  manufacturing industries showing the best progress, with an increase of 0.7% over January 2026.

Mining activity grew 0.6% in February 2026 compared to January. Meanwhile, construction activity increased 0.3% month-over-month.

Electricity generation, transmission and distribution, water supply and natural gas was the only component that decreased in the monthly comparison, falling 1.4% in the period.

The Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity allows us to know and monitor the evolution of industrial activity in Mexico, according to Inegi.

Despite the monthly rebound in February 2026, the IMAI showed a decline in its annual measurement , registering a decrease of 1.3 percent.

Within this indicator, manufacturing industries fell 2.3% year-on-year, while the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, water supply and natural gas decreased 1.4% last February compared to the same month in 2025.

On an annual basis, construction advanced 1.2% and mining registered a growth of 0.9% in February 2026.

The February rebound in the country’s industrial activity represents the third best reading since October 2025, when the IMAI showed a monthly growth of 0.8%.

Industrial activity is one of the main drivers of the Mexican economy, whose dynamism is linked to job creation and investment. It is also one of the indicators that reflects the country’s commercial and economic environment, and it also impacts other sectors through the supply of inputs.
