<p><strong><span dir="auto">Mexican household spending barely grew 0.1% in May 2026 compared to last April</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , driven by the acquisition of national goods and services, according to the results of the Monthly Indicator of Private Consumption (IMCP) of the </span><a href="https://www.inegi.org.mx/"><span dir="auto">National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi)</span></a><span dir="auto"> .</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In its annual measurement, the IMCP, which allows us to know the evolution of household spending on consumer goods and services of both national and imported origin, </span><strong><span dir="auto"> registered an increase of 2.6 percent</span></strong><span dir="auto"> .</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">During the period, Mexicans prioritized domestically produced goods, which increased by 0.3%, while imported goods decreased by 1.2% on a monthly basis.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In its year-on-year comparison, spending on imported goods increased by 8.5% and spending on domestic goods increased by 1.2% in May 2026.</span></p>
<p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-679999 size-full" src="https://t21.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMCPMAY261.jpg" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" srcset="https://t21.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMCPMAY261.jpg 690w, https://t21.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMCPMAY261-300x225.jpg 300w, https://t21.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMCPMAY261-600x450.jpg 600w, https://t21.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMCPMAY261-150x112.jpg 150w" alt="" width="690" height="517" data-pin-no-hover="true" /></p>
<p><span dir="auto">Despite the increase in private consumption, household spending in the country on a monthly basis fell compared to April of this year, when it showed an increase of 0.2 percent.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">Although consumption, which represents </span><strong><span dir="auto">more than 70% of the</span></strong><span dir="auto"> country&#8217;s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), showed positive performance in the fifth month of 2026, Mexicans continue to show caution when purchasing goods and services in the face of weak economic growth.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">According to projections from </span><a href="https://www.bancobase.com/"><span dir="auto">Grupo Financiero BASE</span></a><span dir="auto"> , private consumption, which in recent months has been sustained by the consumption of imported goods, which does not contribute to the country&#8217;s economic growth or boost the domestic market, will be affected by the fragile labor market and the loss of purchasing power of remittances.</span></p>
