The revenues of wholesale and retail commercial companies in Mexico registered a mixed behavior in June 2026, with decreases at a monthly rate, but with annual increases, according to the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

Based on the Monthly Survey on Commercial Enterprises (EMEC), which reports on the current economic behavior of the main variables of domestic trade in the country, real income from the supply of goods and services by wholesale commercial enterprises decreased by 1.2% on a monthly basis in the sixth month of the year.

The number of people employed in this segment decreased by 0.8%, while  average wages increased by 0.4%  in June 2026 compared to last May.

On an annual basis, wholesale businesses saw a 12.9% increase in revenue. They also registered a 0.9% decrease in employment and a 1.5% increase in average real wages.

Meanwhile,  retail trade saw a monthly decline of 0.2% in its revenues and a negative variation of 0.7% in the workforce, although average real wages showed a monthly increase of 0.1 percent.

In June 2026, retail businesses reported a 2% annual increase in their income from the supply of goods and services —the amount obtained from production, marketing or service provision activities—, while the number of employees fell by 0.4% and wages increased by 5.2% year-on-year.

By subsector, wholesale trade, agricultural and forestry raw materials for industry, and waste materials  showed the best performance in terms of income from supplies, with a positive variation of 22.4% compared to June 2025. This was followed by pharmaceutical products, perfumery, leisure items, small household appliances and white goods with an annual increase of 15.8%.

Conversely, textiles and footwear was the activity with the largest drop in the cycle, with an annual decline of 5.7 percent.

The subsector with the highest revenue in retail was  exclusively through the internet and printed catalogs, television, and similar channels,  at 23.2 percent.  Self-service and department stores saw the largest decrease, with an annual decline of 2.3 percent.

One factor that influenced the behavior of the Mexican commercial sector last June was the World Cup, which, although it did generate an economic impact on trade and consumption in the country, did not represent a sustained or generalized boost.

According to the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco-Servytur) , the economic impact did not reach the 65 billion pesos (mdp) expected during the development of the world game, and would have remained between 45 and 50 billion pesos, of which 15 billion pesos would be for additional consumption by Mexican households, destined for food, beverages, entertainment and convenience products.

Despite a slower pace in the Mexican economy, the country’s commercial sector showed positive results in both wholesale and retail trade, which registered increases in their income last March, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

In the third month of 2026,  revenue from the supply of goods and services in the wholesale trade sector increased by 6% month-on-month. Conversely, employment  and  average real wages  decreased by 0.1% and 2.4% month-on-month, respectively, according to the results of the Monthly Survey of Commercial Enterprises (EMEC).

During the period, the  retail sector reported strong revenue growth of 0.1%, while employment fell by 0.2%. Average real wages increased by 0.6% month-on-month.

In their annual measurement, wholesale businesses saw an 8.1% increase in revenue, as well as a 0.1% decrease in the workforce and a 2.7% decrease in average real wages.

Meanwhile, retail businesses reported a 2.4% increase in their income from the supply of goods and services; employment grew by 0.5% and average real wages increased by 7.4% year-on-year.

According to INEGI’s results, three wholesale activity subsectors showed a decrease in supply revenue compared to March 2025.  Wholesale trade intermediation contracted the most, with a 14.7% year-on-year decline.

Conversely, machinery, equipment and furniture for agricultural, industrial, service and commercial activities, and other general-purpose machinery and equipment, experienced the greatest growth at 12.5% ​​at an annual rate.

Meanwhile, the subsector with the highest revenue in retail trade was exclusively through the internet, and printed catalogs, television and similar channels, with 21.4% at an annual rate.

Groceries, food, beverages, ice and tobacco showed the biggest drop in March 2026 compared to the same month in 2025, with a decline in revenue of 6.2 percent.

The positive figures in revenue for Mexico’s commercial sector last March reflect a recovery in consumer purchasing power, despite the country’s economic slowdown.

According to estimates from Grupo Financiero BASE , private consumption will grow between 1.8% and 2.2% in 2026 , driven by the World Cup and a greater number of tourists arriving in the country for the sporting event.

Wholesale and retail trade is a fundamental part of the dynamics of consumption, distribution of goods and economic growth in Mexico, so its measurement is a key factor in understanding other sectors such as employment.

In February 2026, the performance of the commercial sector in Mexico had mixed results, according to the Monthly Survey on Commercial Enterprises (EMEC), which revealed a monthly decrease and an annual increase in the income of wholesale and retail businesses.

According to the survey, prepared by the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , income from the supply of goods and services in  wholesale trade  showed a monthly drop of 1.5 percent .

The number of people employed in this sector increased by 0.5%, while average wages increased by 0.1% on a monthly basis in the second month of the year.

Meanwhile,  retail trade  saw a 0.9% month-on-month decline in revenue . The workforce remained unchanged, and average real wages fell by 0.3% month-on-month.

In their annual report, wholesale businesses saw a 0.1% increase in total revenue. Furthermore, they experienced no change in their workforce and reported a 0.7% increase in average real wages.

Retail trade saw a 3.2% increase in revenue from the supply of goods and services; employment rose by 0.9% and average real wages grew by 6.4% year-on-year.

In February of this year, most wholesale activity sectors and subsectors showed negative figures compared to February 2025 in their revenues.

Trucks and new parts and accessories for automobiles, vans, and trucks saw the largest decline, with a 10.9% year-on-year decrease. This was followed by wholesale trade intermediation, with a 7.6% year-on-year decline.

Conversely, the sectors and subsectors with the highest  annual  income in retail trade were textiles, costume jewelry, clothing accessories and footwear with an annual increase of 14.8%; and stationery, leisure and other personal items with an annual increase of 13.2%.

The mixed scenario of the country’s commercial sector occurs in a volatile inflationary context, which although it registered a slight decrease in the first half of April 2026, continues to put pressure on various basic products, which affects consumer confidence, who have had to change their habits by buying lower-cost supplies or reducing expenses.
