Light vehicle sales in Mexico are headed for the fast track in April

The strong performance of the Mexican automotive industry continues to be reflected in the sector’s figures. During April 2026, 118,859 light vehicles were sold in the domestic market, representing an 8.6% increase compared to the same month in 2025, when 109,420 units were sold, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) published on Wednesday.

The positive trend in car sales also extended into the first four months of the year, with 500,512 units sold, an increase of 4.8% compared to the same period last year, in which 477,409 vehicles were sold.

According to statistics from the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL) , the accumulated figure represented the best result for a January-April period in the last nine years.

In the January-April 2026 cycle, the brands that stood out in vehicle sales were Nissan with 17.3%, General Motors with 13.2%, Volkswagen with 11%, Toyota with 8.1% and KIA with 7.2% market share, according to the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) and the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) .

The report highlighted that Chinese brands showed variable performance , although they continue to gain ground in the Mexican market.

In that sense, Geely increased its sales by 283.3% in April 2026 compared to the same month in 2025, Changan grew by 101.1%, JAC fell by 5.4%, MG Motor declined by 4.4%, and Foton increased its annual sales by 2.9%.

Other brands in the sector performed well year-on-year in the fourth month of the year. Stellantis grew 15.8%, Hyundai advanced 13.7%, Honda rose 2%, Volkswagen accelerated 5%, and Mitsubishi reported a 4.6% increase in sales.

With the April rebound in annual sales of light vehicles, the Mexican automotive industry has now recorded two months of positive figures, following a 0.3% drop last February.

The above reflects an improvement in the purchasing power of Mexican consumers, in an economy that is beginning to show slight signs of recovery, although specialists have pointed out that risks still persist, mainly due to external factors such as the conflict in the Middle East and a constantly changing global trade policy, framed by the imposition of tariffs.

Vehicle sales in Mexico “fall into a slump” in August

The Mexican automotive market closed August 2025 with negative results, since 124,167 new light vehicles were sold , which represented a 3% drop compared to August 2024, when 128,008 units were sold, according to information from the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

The agency also reported that during the January-August period of this year, automobile sales totaled 957,993 units , a 0.7% decrease compared to the same period last year.

Despite the decline, according to INEGI data, this is the fourth best January-August cycle in the last 10 years.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Association of Automobile Dealers (AMDA) and the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) reported that among the brands with the best performance in terms of vehicle sales in the accumulated 2025 were Nissan with 18.3% of the market, followed by General Motors with 13.3%, Volkswagen with 11.3%, and Toyota with 8.4%.

Brands such as Suzuki , Toyota, Isuzu , Honda and Mazda showed declines in their sales during August 2025, with decreases of 25%, 10.6%, 26.8%, 9.5% and 6.2%, respectively, compared to the sales of the same month last year.

Meanwhile, during the eighth month of 2025, KIA , Nissan and Mitsubishi recorded positive figures in their placements, with increases of 9.8%, 9.9% and 8.9%, respectively.

The decline in light vehicle sales in August 2025 comes amid a slowdown in the Mexican economy, and the national automotive industry faces a challenging environment, marked by factors such as trade uncertainty stemming from U.S. tariffs.

It’s worth remembering that tariffs on key inputs for the sector, such as steel and aluminum, remain in effect, even though Mexico has secured a 90-day extension on new tariffs from the United States.

Light vehicle production in Mexico increases, but exports fall in January

During January 2025, 312,257 units were manufactured in Mexico , which meant an increase of 1.7% compared to the same month in 2024, according to what the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) announced this Monday .

Adriana Ramírez , manager of Economic Studies for the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) , stressed in a press conference that the production by segment was 50.6% SUVs. This was followed by pickups with 23% , compacts with 19.4% , subcompacts with 3.7% , luxury with 3.1% , and minivans with 0.2 percent .

According to information from the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVL) of Inegi, at the end of the first month of this year, light trucks represented 73.8% of production with 230,383 units .

Meanwhile, automobile manufacturing accumulated 26.2% in that period with 81,874 units.

With an increase of 243.1% in January 2025, Toyota stood out in its national production compared to the same month in 2024, while KIA reported an increase of 53.8% in that period and Mazda of 9.4 percent .

Vehicle exports fall in January

Inegi also announced that the export of light vehicles manufactured in Mexico was 219,414 units , which represented a drop of 13.7% in January 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, when 254,367 vehicles were sent abroad .

The United States was the main destination for light vehicle exports, with 83.6% (183,321 units) , followed by Canada with 21,707 cars, which accounted for 9.9% and Germany with 4,030 units, which represented 1.8% of shipments abroad.

“The great relevance and importance of the US market is highlighted, since 83.6% of exports have been directed to our northern neighbor since 2020. The United States market share had not exceeded 83%, and the top three countries to which we export represent 95.3%, which are the United States, Canada, and Germany,” Adriana Ramírez highlighted.

The brands that registered the highest exports in the first month of this year were Toyota , with an increase of 324.5% over the same period last year. KIA followed with an increase of 23.1% , and Ford with an increase of 4.7% in its shipments abroad in that month, according to figures from Inegi.

By segment, Ramírez indicated that SUVs were the units that were exported the most with 55.1% , followed by pickups with 25% , compacts with 17.1% , luxury with 1.5% and subcompacts with 0.7 percent .

Regarding sales in the domestic market, the sector reached 119,811 new units in the first month of 2025, which represented an increase of 5.9% compared to the same month last year.

“According to official data collected by Inegi, January 2025 is the year in which we are in third place, behind only 2017 with a difference of 2.9% and practically at the same level as 2016,” said Guillermo Rosales, executive president of the Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA) .

At a press conference, he said that, although there is a recovery in the industry, expectations for 2025 are moderate. In an optimistic scenario in which the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grows 1.1% , AMDA expects the sale of 1,530,029 units .

In a second scenario, in which an economic contraction of 1% is foreseen , sales could fall to 1,482,734 units .

“Month by month, expectations for the Mexican economy have been declining, mainly due to the order of the relationship between the United States and Mexico, but we are also already experiencing a dynamic of deceleration that began towards the end of 2023,” Rosales said.
