Nearshoring , industrial growth, and the need for more efficient and sustainable logistics solutions in the Cali-Baja region are among the opportunities for freight rail to drive its growth. Baja California Railroad (BJRR) , operator of the short-gauge rail line in northwest Mexico, knows the path forward and has a defined plan for 2026 to ensure that this mode of transport is not just an alternative, but becomes the primary logistics option for industry.

“The development of customs infrastructure, binational integration, and market diversification can position rail as the ideal means for transporting large volumes of cargo, particularly in sectors such as energy, agribusiness, and advanced manufacturing. The Cali-Baja mega-region has enormous potential due to its productive integration between Mexico and the United States,” says Roberto Romandía, the company’s CEO, in an interview with T21.

He asserts that strengthening cross-border trade, optimizing rail crossing times, and promoting integrated logistics schemes will attract more companies seeking to reduce costs and improve their international competitiveness . “The trend of industrial relocation also represents a great opportunity to consolidate rail as the backbone of logistics.”

Romandía argues that the railroad is vital for Baja California , since the region has more than a thousand maquiladoras that depend on efficient and competitive supply chains, and this mode of transport offers capacity, safety, cost reduction, less environmental impact and operational stability.

“Many companies are facing complex situations related to union issues, work stoppages, and internal cost pressures. The rail model allows maquiladoras to reduce their internal operating burden—less need for their own operators, less exposure to labor disputes in ground logistics, and less dependence on union schemes in transportation—which has become a strategic asset. Furthermore, they will soon be able to optimize returns to the United States with finished products, further reducing their costs,” he mentions.

The second edition of ETYL Cali-Baja (Transportation and Logistics Meeting) will take place on May 14th.  This forum, organized by  Grupo T21  , will bring together industry leaders and nearly 200 attendees at the Real Inn Hotel in Tijuana. Through four panels, specialists will analyze the  challenges and opportunities in the binational logistics context and their impact on supply chains . Kuehne+Nagel , a global logistics solutions company, expanded its facilities in El Paso, Texas, USA, adding 20,252 square meters (m2 ⁾ to its existing facilities, which meant a 60% increase in its operational capacity .

Joachim Goller, senior vice president of North American Ground Logistics, noted that the existing 33,723 m2 facility ^reached  its maximum capacity in just one year , reflecting the growing demand for cross-border logistics solutions.

“This success underscores the need for scalable expansion to support our existing customers and new businesses, while maintaining the high standards they expect. This investment further strengthens our market position on the U.S.-Mexico border and confirms that, despite current geopolitical changes, the nearshoring trend is alive and well,” he said.

The new facilities, strategically located on the border, are designed to meet the growing demand for bidirectional freight transport between Mexico and the United States.  The new customs warehouse features 53 loading docks, 65 truck bays, front and rear transshipment capacity, and vertical racking , the company emphasized in a statement.

The firm highlighted that, despite tariff uncertainty, international companies continue to invest in relocating their production lines to Mexico . In response, the company expanded its infrastructure to support its clients in building more resilient supply chains.

El cargo Rems Logistics promotes cross-border logistics corridor between Mexico and the U.S. apareció primero en T21.

Established in 1987, but with a history that began in 1882 with Matson Navigation, this American logistics company has been handling cargo from Mexico for 20 years , specializing in cross-border intermodal services. It has recently expanded its range of services to include cargo deliveries within Mexico through the creation of Matson Logistics MX. 

“We are expanding to offer intermodal rail and road transportation within the country or across the border to the United States and Canada,” shares Adriana Muñoz, general manager of Mexico for Matson Logistics. 

The growth of nearshoring in the country was key to the creation of the Mexican subsidiary , which will allow it to expand into new markets through the synergies it has with railroads and transporters to offer more logistics solutions. 

The intra-Mexico operation began in September this year, after more than two decades of experience in cross-border rail and road services. 

Matson Logistics conducted a thorough market review and determined that creating a subsidiary in Mexico would allow it to expand its services across the country and offer a variety of transportation and supply chain services. 

“We started with the service using Ferromex’s interpacific network. We plan to participate in all available routes of the Mexican railroads,” says Muñoz.  

With the creation of Matson Logistics MX, the company seeks to initiate road brokerage services in Mexico. This means that if a client is looking for a solution that requires road transportation, whether due to customs requirements or specific needs, the company offers a logistics solution through alliances with different types of road transporters and can “create a customized route for the client from origin to destination.”

El cargo Matson Logistics Mexico expands its rail and road services apareció primero en T21.

The Association of Logistics Operators of Mexico (AOLM) announced on Monday the addition of Maersk to its ranks, a container integrated logistics company operating in 130 countries, providing services such as maritime transportation, terminals, and logistics.

“We are pleased to announce Maersk as our new associate. This new partnership represents a significant milestone in the ongoing expansion and strengthening of the association. Its integration will bring better practices and opportunities to boost the competitiveness of our members and the sector as a whole,” the association said in a statement.

Likewise, AOLM indicated that Maersk will bring its expertise and leadership, establishing new synergies and initiatives, reinforcing the association’s position as a leader in industry promotion and collaboration.

“As part of our vision to be a logistics service integrator, it is of utmost importance for Maersk Mexico to be a partner of AOLM and to have the opportunity to collaborate with you and your associates. We are convinced that this addition will bring great value and have a significant impact on the logistics operators industry, allowing us to participate in the exchange of ideas on logistics development in the country,” said Victor Soto, Head of Contract Logistics at Maersk.

AOLM indicated that they have bolstered their position as a core hub in logistics, bringing together prominent actors, fostering growth and excellence in this field.

A.P. Moller – Maersk has outlined the roadmap for physical infrastructure development and expansion in Mexico, a strategy that has gained momentum with the industrial nearshoring trend, primarily due to the demand for maritime services in import traffic to Mexico. For example, it plans to open more fulfillment centers for warehousing and distribution operations.

Currently, Maersk’s footprint covers more than 150,000 m2 throughout Mexico, with warehouses located in Mexico City, Tijuana, and Cuautitlán, and depots near the ports of Lázaro Cárdenas and Manzanillo, with expansion plans in Guadalajara and Monterrey, and expanding its land capabilities, with the aim of offering customers solutions for Mexico-United States cross-border trade.
