The trucking industry in Mexico faces not only cost and competitive pressures, but also a factor that continues to affect the daily operations of many companies: road safety . For Transportes Calesa , this environment has become one of the main challenges to sustaining its operations and maintaining service continuity, according to Wendy Cano León, the company’s Administrative and Logistics Manager, who was also recognized as one of the 100 Women in Transportation and Logistics in 2025.

Vehicle thefts represent one of the most significant challenges for the company. Beyond the economic impact, they cause operational disruptions and require constant adjustments to continue serving their customers. “We are part of the statistics,” Cano remarked, referring to the incidents they have faced.

According to the National Association of Vehicle Tracking and Protection Companies (ANERPV) , the incidence of crime (in the first quarter of 2026) was concentrated in specific corridors, mainly in entities such as the State of Mexico, Puebla and Guanajuato , as well as on key routes such as Mexico 57 and Mexico 150D, where the probability of events remains high.

Furthermore, around 80% of highway robberies occur in heavy goods vehicles , reinforcing the need for more precise risk management in road transport.

From their experience, the lack of sufficient coverage on highways and the limited presence of surveillance in certain sections continue to be factors that keep the sector exposed, as they hinder the prevention of crimes and reduce the capacity to respond to incidents, leaving carriers in more vulnerable conditions during their journeys.

This context not only affects security , but also the way companies operate, forcing them to strengthen controls, adjust processes, and maintain constant supervision on every trip.

In this way, Cano León explained that Transportes Calesa has reinforced its operational processes to maintain the continuity of service in a complex environment, with greater attention to the monitoring of each trip and to safety conditions .

In that sense, the company maintains its focus on the transport of industrial materials and supplies. It works “with 30-cubic-meter gondolas or hoppers , full-size units, and tankers , for both general cargo and specific materials, including silica sand, which implies constant monitoring and precise control in each shipment,” he explained.

The company’s history dates back to 1980, when the family acquired their first truck. From there, they began a gradual growth within the trucking industry, until formalizing the company in 1990 under the name Transportes Calesa. Since then, it has remained a family business in which different generations participate directly in its operations.

That origin also defines its way of working. The company has chosen to differentiate itself through service, prioritizing close customer relationships and direct oversight of each operation. “We don’t compete on price, we compete on quality and responsibility,” Cano stated.

This approach translates into personalized service, where the owners themselves participate in the operation, monitor cargo conditions, and respond directly to any eventuality. In a market where conditions are not always equal for all participants, this model has become their main strength.

Furthermore, the company continues to advance in the sector, sustaining its operation based on experience, family work and a clear commitment to service as the core of its development.

Moller – Maersk announced the launch of Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio , a new digital solution designed to help global cargo owners navigate the volatility and complexity of tariffs. It will be available starting June 28 for cargo imported into the United States, with full rollout to the rest of the world planned for August.

The firm’s new platform offers a centralized, AI- powered approach to customs and tariff management, empowering its clients to regain control in an increasingly volatile trading environment.

“The current environment is defined by unpredictability, with newly imposed and suddenly postponed tariffs creating what many of our customers describe as “tariff chaos.” Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio is our answer to this challenge: bringing clarity, compliance, agility, and cost optimization to global supply chains as goods cross borders,” said Lars Karlsson, Global Head of Trade & Customs Consulting at Maersk.

The product is best used by cargo owners as part of their integrated Maersk logistics services, but can also be implemented as a standalone solution, the Danish company emphasized in a statement.

Maersk identified some challenges in the face of tariff chaos, where many companies, even with a global presence, still rely on up to 30 or 40 local customs brokers, located in other ports or countries, resulting in fragmented data , limited visibility, and unnecessarily paid tariffs.

According to the shipping company, between 5% and 6% of rates are overpaid on average due to a lack of centralized data and optimization. Among other data, it noted that 20% of shipping delays are due to poor customs preparation.

In this regard, he indicated that Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio is a global customs platform that combines AI-powered tariff engineering and optimization , ensuring the correct application of more than six thousand product codes and more than 20 thousand subcodes.

It also provides pre-compliance risk screening, helping customers avoid delays , detentions, and penalties, and offers real-time data updates from partners as well as Maersk’s network of 2,700 customs specialists worldwide.

It also allows for the integration of trusted local brokers while ensuring a global vision.

“Customs clearance is one of the most complex areas of global logistics. With Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio, we’re not only simplifying this complexity, but turning it into a competitive advantage for our customers,” Lars Karlsson emphasized.

However, in an increasingly competitive and demanding market, the company has evolved to encompass much more than express deliveries.

In an interview with T21, Alexis Patjane , CEO of 99minutos, explained that the business has ceased to be exclusively last-mile to become a comprehensive logistics operator , capable of covering the entire supply chain.

With the launch of Freight 99 and Cross 99 , the company consolidated an ecosystem where e-commerce can move its merchandise from abroad to the final consumer in Latin America without intermediaries.

Freight 99 , launched in late 2024, was born as a response to a gap that existed between fulfillment and merchandise import, where e-commercecustomers needed to move containers from ports or borders to distribution centers.

This solution focuses on heavy transport, from 3.5-ton trucks to full trucks , and not only serves large companies, but also small transporters or “truck drivers ,” who, through 99minutos technology, access new markets that were previously unattainable.

“The goal is to integrate those who don’t have GPS, digital billing systems, or invoicing systems. They’re very good operators, but they don’t have access to large clients or viable payment terms. We connect them with demand, provide traceability, visibility, and payment technology, and help them formalize their operations,” said Patjane.

Currently, Freight 99 moves between 150 and 200 units per day , and the expectation is to close the year with at least 250 of its own daily units , not counting the outsourced capacity that can multiply that figure.

For its part, Cross 99 , the most recent vertical, seeks to facilitate the global operation of any e-commerce that wants to sell in Mexico, Colombia, Chile or Peru (where 99minutos has operations) , without having a physical presence in these countries.

From collection in the country of origin to customs clearance and final delivery, 99minutos offers a complete chain of solutions, including returns.

This vertical transforms the company into a kind of regional logistics operator, capable of managing trade flows between Latin America and the rest of the world with a turnkey solution.

The product is already actively operating, and in its first six months has reached between 48 and 50 daily operations , with plans for rapid expansion into new corridors, especially between Europe, Asia and Latin America.

With more than a thousand of its own units in Mexico , more than 10 thousand outsourced collaborators and a storage capacity of seven thousand square meters with more than one million inventory positions , 99minutos operates six logistics verticals: express parcel delivery, specialized deliveries (Tailor 99), fulfillment (Fulfill 99), network of physical points (Punto 99), cargo transportation (Freight 99) and international logistics (Cross 99), thus covering the entire supply chain.

The company has opted to establish itself as a flexible alternative, capable of adapting to market dynamics and bridging the gaps that still exist between the purchase click and the delivery experience.

“This year we have invested nearly $12 million in infrastructure and technology, and we want to double that figure by 2026,” Patjane emphasized.

“We have a policy that we must manufacture over 80% of the components ourselves to be practically self-sufficient. So, based on that principle, we manufacture frames, for example, made of metal for our stations, which we cut, bend, and drill ourselves,” explained José Magaña, Sales Representative for TRUMPF’s Laser Technology Division for Central and Bajío Regions of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America.

For shipments to various parts of the world, the German-based company relies on three logistics service providers and customs agencies to manage imports and tax regulations.

Magaña noted that the main distribution ports in Mexico are Altamira, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz , while smaller equipment can be shipped by air to international airports.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company said the supply chain faced challenges due to shortages of microchips and electronic components, which caused deliveries to take up to twice the estimated time.
Since its inception in 2001, the main purpose of CIMA Group has been to become a market alternative that offers comprehensive logistics solutions to simplify its clients’ foreign trade operations. An objective that, according to its founders, has been achieved. However, in its DNA they carry the gene of continuous improvement , which is why in recent times they have made transcendental decisions that have led the company to enter into a process of reinvention and expansion towards the main ports and even towards the center of Mexico.

The port of Manzanillo, the largest maritime commercial connection point on the Mexican Pacific coast, has been the catapult for this business group that in the past 23 years has positioned itself as a leading player, by having multiple logistics services that compete not only with savings in costs and time, but also in generating added value.

But at this stage of growth, the need to consolidate business continuity has increased, even more so as it is a company where the family is involved in different leadership positions. For this reason, since 2023 CIMA Group began to lay the foundations to institutionalize the company and support its decisions or strategic plans through corporate governance, with the guidance of a Board of Directors.

“The first step was to find a general manager who was compatible with the principles and values that we have promoted at CIMA Group: faith and family, but with the necessary talent, ability and experience,” said César Humberto Romero García, Chairman of the Board of Directors, in an interview. He also said that after a year of searching for and evaluating candidates, Carlos Olivar Pérez, an experienced logistics executive, was appointed to this position at the end of July last year.

Olivar’s first task has been the stabilization and consolidation of CIMA Group , accompanied by the generation of best corporate practices, talent development and the installation of technological systems that help to have accurate and timely information on the company’s daily operations.

“We are being very responsible in terms of the steps we are taking based on a strategic plan that has to do with defining the most basic processes and procedures, the creation of a new corporate structure and an adequate, sufficient, modern organizational structure with the technical capacity, knowledge, and sufficient experience to guarantee success,” says Carlos Olivar, also in an interview with T21.

The strategic plan that the CEO of CIMA Group talks about will guide the group’s actions over the next five years. And one of the first major decisions that has been taken has been to replicate in each port where CIMA Group has a presence all the business models that are currently offered in the port of Manzanillo.

Automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) , commitment to sustainability through electric fleets, as well as the growth of e-commerce , are some of the trends for 2025 in logistics, which will help transform the customer experience and respond to the challenges of the operational processes demanded by this sector, identified the company specialized in logistics services J&T Express .

In an increasingly globalized world, logistics plays an essential role in connecting people, companies and markets , so companies that offer this service must be at the forefront of trends and technology to transform this industry.

In this context, J&T Express predicts that automation and AI will continue to revolutionize the logistics sector in 2025, enabling real-time operational efficiency.

According to a study by Consegic Business Intelligence , it is estimated that the market for industrial automation and control systems will reach more than 864 million dollars (mdd) in 2031 , which will allow a cost reduction of up to 30% with the implementation of robots , drones and automated systems in distribution centers .

Another trend is the commitment to sustainability , which, according to the logistics company, will be a fundamental pillar in the sector for next year, and according to the consulting firm PwC , it is expected that 25% of global commercial fleets will be electrified .

Predictive analytics and Big Data are other trends in the sector for 2025, as these tools allow anticipating legal contingencies and optimizing operational processes. According to McKinsey Global Institute , companies that adopt advanced analytics are 23% more likely to outperform their competitors in revenue and profit.

Based on accurate forecasts based on historical data and identified patterns, risks can be reduced and a competitive advantage added by responding and innovating quickly to changes in the market, anticipating consumer trends and optimizing distribution routes.

In 2025 , e-commerce will continue to grow and drive an “unprecedented” demand for express and efficient logistics services, the company said in a statement. According to the consulting firm Statista , the global e-commerce market is expected to reach $8.1 trillion by 2025.

Logistics will undergo a transformation by 2025 that will be driven by automation, e-commerce, sustainability and digitalization, J&T Express stressed.

According to Mordor Intelligence , Mexico’s freight and logistics market size is estimated at $136.11 billion in 2024, and is expected to reach $171.40 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 4.72% during this period.
