BAJA FERRIES GOES BEYOND THE FERRY, LAUNCHES BF CONNECT

The pandemic, which generated increased demand for e-commerce, the disruption of the supply chain caused by COVID-19, nearshoring, and now the efforts to industrialize the country with Plan Mexico, have increased the demand for logistics services, and this trend is expected to continue.

In an interview with T21 for the December 2024 edition of T21 magazine, Nino Liaño, CEO of Baja Ferries , commented that “we must raise our heads beyond the ferry, by strengthening the logistics focus and short-distance and cabotage routes.”

On that route, Baja Ferries introduced BF Connect, its multimodal and logistics services offering, focused on providing a comprehensive solution to customers from origin to destination , shared Sebastián Díaz Pizarro, the company’s Director of New Business Development.

During his presentation at The Logistics World, Díaz Pizarro stated that the modernization of various infrastructures, such as the ports of Lázaro Cárdenas and Manzanillo, as well as the integration of cabotage services, have been progressing, but greater speed is required.

Given this reality and the market need, BF Connect offers a 360-degree logistics model. “The goal is to be able to address all the needs a customer may have,” added Sebastián Díaz.

In its integration, BF Connect counts on commercial partners to fulfill its service portfolio, such as the Ferromex rail service , its own and outsourced transport, as well as port operators. “As we have said, the principle of this proposal also has a focus on sustainability and CO2 reduction ,” Díaz Pizarro highlighted.

BF Connect’s service portfolio includes intermodal services, combining rail equipment and logistics integration. “This can range from maneuvers at the port of origin or at the gate to the ship,” the executive added, adding that they have a complete network: maneuvers, delivery, including detailed delivery, which they are aware is one of the most demanding.

Special bulk cargo projects are also considered. “We’ve moved everything from the first stone of a hotel to the last mirror that’s installed , we’ve moved the circus, the carnival, we can move removals, we move bridesmaids, cars, etc.,” he said.

Regarding rail services, the Grupo México Transportes network is being used , reaching as far south as Southern California, with services from the center of the country across the Pacific. Meanwhile, ferries connect to this rail network from the port of Mazatlán and the port of Topolobampo to transport cargo to Baja California Sur.

J&T Express Reports Profitability and Growth During the First Half of 2024

During the first half of 2024, J&T Global Express Limited (J&T Express) , a logistics services provider, achieved an increase in revenue of 20.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The company explained through a press release that this growth was $4.86 billion , and was mainly driven by the 33.7% increase in revenue generated by its express delivery services.

In that sense, during this period, the company recorded a net income of 31,026 million dollars , reversing the losses of 670 million from the previous year.

It also achieved an adjusted EBITDA of $350 million, which represents an increase of 795.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. Additionally, EBIT turned positive, reaching $120 million, reflecting sustained profitability for the first time in the company’s history.

Additionally, the total volume of packages handled by J&T Express grew by 38.3% , reaching 11.01 billion, with China and Southeast Asia as the main drivers of growth, where volume increased by 37% and 42%, respectively.

Fan Suzhou, CEO of J&T Express, stressed that the company plans to continue its strategic growth globally, improving the quality of its logistics services and strengthening its operations network.

In emerging markets such as Saudi Arabia and Mexico , the company also reported a significant growth of 64% in package volume, driving an increase in its revenue.

Despite these results, J&T highlighted in its statement that it will continue to focus on improving its operational efficiency and expanding its global presence.

Onest Smart Logistics Experiences Accelerated Growth Due to Nearshoring

The nearshoring trend (relocation of production lines) has enhanced Mexico’s logistics operations, allowing players such as 3PL ( Third Party Logistics ) Onest Smart Logistics to grow their volume and increase their logistics infrastructure.

Vania Imán, Marketing & E-commerce manager at Onest, told T21 that this year they began with approximately 500 thousand square meters (m²) of infrastructure in operation and will culminate with 600 thousand m² .

“We have had a lot of growth, we have several new clients in consumer, technology, fashion, so there are four new clients that help us expand, in addition, current clients that we have are also growing and are asking us for new distribution centers in different places in the world. country and growth in certain places of the (Mexican) Republic. The truth is that this year is very important in growth,” she assured.

Although more than 50% of Onest’s infrastructure is located in the State of Mexico, Vania Imán highlighted that they are currently focusing on Monterrey, where they have a new logistics center focused on nearshoring .

In this sense, the board indicated that this is a strategic market where the business can be expanded, in which there is security and technology.

On the other hand, Imán pointed out that they are also having an important presence in other points such as Tijuana , for example, which is another important point in their logistics.

Likewise, he detailed that Onest Smart Logistics, which began a new chapter characterized by a greater focus on technology, is already advancing in this line, with a team dedicated to developing it .

“Today we have a team of more than 40 systems people in terms of technology, information security technology, racks, picking systems, lighting systems, robotization systems, drones. Today there are many things in the world that we could be using, so we are dedicating a lot of effort, a lot of money to that aspect to see how we can make logistics flow in a simpler, better and faster way,” said Vania Imán.
