Mexico no longer competes solely on cost or location: it competes on the efficiency and resilience of its supply chains. Amid the rise of nearshoring and the pressure of increasingly demanding markets, logistics has ceased to be merely an operational link and has become a decisive factor in competitiveness.

For Sergio Morales , president of the Mexican Association of Logistics Operators (AOLM) , the country not only faces higher levels of operational complexity, but also a historic opportunity to consolidate itself as a key node in global trade.

“In a Mexico that is consolidating itself as a global logistics hub , our responsibility is clear: to be the strategic partner that drives competitiveness, guaranteeing more agile, secure, and technologically prepared operations for the future. That, in essence, is the mission we undertake every day,” he explains in an interview.

Added to this is the effect of nearshoring , which has placed Mexico in a strategic position within international flows.

In this context, the role of the logistics operator has evolved substantially. It is no longer simply about executing processes, but about enabling the competitiveness of companies. From highly regulated sectors like pharmaceuticals to industries like automotive, retail , and e-commerce , logistics has become a critical factor in ensuring operational continuity, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Morales sums it up clearly: the modern logistics operator designs comprehensive supply chain architectures , integrates technology, generates economies of scale, and transforms complexity into efficiency.

Given this scenario, the AOLM’s agenda under its new presidency will focus on three key areas : boosting the sector’s competitiveness, promoting professionalization and innovation, and strengthening collaboration between companies, industry, and authorities.

The digital transformation of foreign trade will have a new meeting point in Mexico. On May 14th, Logtech Day , organized by KLog , will take place at the Estación Indianilla Cultural Center starting at 5:00 PM , with the aim of discussing the challenges and opportunities of an industry facing rapid change.

According to Janan Knust , founder and CEO of the company, the event seeks to drive an urgent conversation: logistics can no longer be limited to moving cargo , but must evolve towards a model based on data, visibility and strategic decision-making.

“We are at a pivotal moment. Technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, but the industry is still adapting. Logtech Day is the space to accelerate that change,” he noted.

In this context, KLog – which defines itself as the only digital freight forwarder in Latin America that has managed to consolidate – seeks to position itself as a catalyst for this transformation.

Despite numerous global attempts to digitize freight forwarding , many have failed or reduced operations. For Knust, this doesn’t mean digitization doesn’t work, but rather that the industry’s timelines are longer and more complex .

“It’s a fragmented industry, with multiple players, languages, time zones, and different technological levels. That makes digitizing it particularly difficult,” he noted.

From a factory in China to the final delivery point, carriers, customs, shipping companies, insurers and logistics operators are involved , making foreign trade a highly asymmetric chain and prone to exceptions .

In this regard, KLog has focused on Mexico as its main growth strategy in the region. The reason? A large, dynamic market with a high need for operational visibility.

“The common denominator is the lack of integrated information. There is a great opportunity in connecting data and turning it into decisions,” Knust said.

The company has recorded growth exceeding 100% in the country, driven by companies seeking technological solutions to manage complex operations, multiple SKUs, and increasingly demanding supply chains.

A space to connect the entire logistics chain

The meeting will bring together key players in the logistics ecosystem , from importers and exporters to forwarders, technology companies, financial institutions and foreign trade specialists.

The goal is to generate dialogue between the different links in a historically fragmented chain , where the lack of information integration remains one of the main operational challenges.

One of the central messages of the event will be that digitization is not only a technological issue, but a cultural one.

“The big challenge is not just implementing tools, but changing the way we understand logistics. Today, the value lies in anticipating, not reacting,” he explained.

Although artificial intelligence (AI) and automated systems are redefining the industry, Knust was emphatic: the human factor will remain essential .

“Technology isn’t going to go backwards, but people must be at the center. The real change is in the mindset ,” he emphasized.

Under this logic, KLog summarizes his vision in one sentence: “Systematize the predictable to humanize the exceptional . ”

This involves automating repetitive processes to free up time and allow teams to focus on what is truly valuable: decision-making, exception resolution, and customer relationships.

Logtech: an industry under construction

Logtech Day also seeks to position the concept of “logtech” in the region, following a similar logic to what happened with fintech in the financial sector, a new layer of innovation that redefines traditional industries .

According to Felipe Ordóñez, CEO of Promologistics , the key to taking advantage of this opportunity lies in innovation, advance planning, and strategic infrastructure .

“E-commerce continues to be a market with great potential, for both domestic and foreign companies. Rather than worrying about uncertainty, we’ve focused on preparing to take advantage of these opportunities,” Ordóñez said in an interview with T21.

The executive explained that the company has just opened its third distribution center in Tultitlán , State of Mexico, with a surface area of 20,000 square meters (m2), which will allow them to expand their capacity and respond to growing demand.

With this expansion, Promologistics reached 45,000 m2 of warehouse space and 42,000 rack positions , strengthening its presence in the Valley of Mexico, an area that Ordóñez described as strategic due to its connectivity with the entire country .

“Location plays a key role. From the northern part of the metropolitan area, we can quickly serve not only Mexico City, but also key regions like Monterrey and Guadalajara,” he commented.

While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the growth of e-commerce , it also highlighted the logistics industry’s lack of preparedness , so Ordóñez stated that the sector has learned to manage peak demand on key dates such as El Buen Fin or Hot Sale.

However, the challenge is no longer just to deliver faster, but to offer personalized experiences .

“Consumers are becoming more sophisticated: they don’t always want to receive a product immediately; they often want it on a specific day and at a specific place. The future of logistics lies in this personalized delivery,” he emphasized.

In addition, Promologistics has invested in technological integration with Mexico’s leading marketplaces , allowing them to process orders more quickly and keep users informed in real time about the status of their purchases.

But innovation isn’t limited to software ; the company is also rethinking its internal processes at its distribution centers to make order fulfillment more agile and cost-effective , helping its customers cope with an environment where pressure on logistics costs is ever-increasing.

“Our commitment is to offer more efficient cost structures that allow our customers to maintain competitive margins in a market where prices are increasingly tight,” the executive stated.

While large logistics operators typically serve larger corporations, Promologistics has identified an opportunity in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) looking to enter the e-commerce space .

“We want to serve this sector, which is somewhat underserved, by offering affordable and valuable solutions that allow them to integrate with marketplaces quickly,” Ordóñez explained.

The company currently serves clients in sectors such as electronics, office furniture, textiles, footwear, and dietary supplements , maintaining a diversified portfolio to keep pace with the dynamic e-commerce sector in Mexico.

The real estate challenge

Promologistics’ growth in Tultitlán comes as the CTT logistics corridor (Cuautitlán, Tultitlán, and Tepotzotlán) continues to lead the demand for industrial space in the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico.

According to CBRE ‘s Marketview Industrial CDMX 2Q25 report , this corridor accounted for 47% of total activity so far this year and 91% of new supply , while maintaining minimum vacancy rates of just 0.8 percent .

The logistical dynamism is also reflected in the gross absorption of industrial space, which reached 331,000 m2 in the second quarter of 2025 , with a cumulative total of 640,000 m2 in the first half of the year, a figure 97% higher than the pre-pandemic period of 2019.

The report highlights that the logistics sector was the main driver of this demand, accounting for 69% of the market area , reinforcing the importance of the CTT as a strategic epicenter for distribution throughout the country.

In this sense, another challenge has been access to industrial space. For Ordóñez, this situation forced companies like Promologistics to plan the opening of new warehouses a year in advance , even without having guaranteed customer volume.

“It’s a risky venture, but a necessary one if you don’t want to run out of space. Fortunately, we’re seeing the real estate market beginning to normalize, although it remains limited,” he emphasized.

This year the Association of Logistics Operators of Mexico (AOLM) celebrates its first decade as a driver of the development of the national logistics sector . Throughout its history, the group has represented the interests of its partners before various public and private bodies at a national and international level, in its desire to promote the competitiveness of logistics operators in Mexico.

During the celebration event, Mónica García-Escudero, general manager of AOLM, commented that the association has been strengthened thanks to the effort and support of its members.

“Together we have built a solid and committed group that has known how to face challenges, overcome obstacles and promote a logistics industry. Today we represent more than 45 thousand collaborators nationwide, we add four million square meters of warehouse, in addition, our partner companies have a presence in more than 130 countries,” commented García-Escudero.

The general manager of AOLM said that one of the association’s greatest achievements has been promoting an environment where logistics operators have been able to perform on equal terms. Likewise, she indicated that the group has worked to establish standards and promote innovation, collaboration and camaraderie .

Mónica García-Escudero.

During his speech, García-Escudero thanked the member companies for believing in AOLM, for their commitment to continuous improvement and for sharing the objective of strengthening and promoting the growth of logistics in Mexico. “Our mission is to lead change in logistics and with the support of our associated companies we are confident that the next 10 years that we begin today will bring more successes and achievements,” he shared.

For his part, Antonio Castro, president of AOLM, detailed in an interview for T21 that during his administration he will continue working to strengthen the group. In addition, he indicated that he will seek to address security issues since it is one of the main challenges; In this sense, he will seek to continue the synergy with the authorities of the different levels of government that are about to take office.

The above is with the objective that logistical operations are carried out with the greatest possible security. “We seek the protection of transportation, roads and heritage, because in warehouses we are exposed to crime, so we want to strengthen synergies with authorities, as well as with C4 and C5,” he indicated.

Among the plans for the next two years, Castro detailed that he will promote growth in the number of associates and will focus on collaboration with academic institutions, chambers and sister associations .

The president of the AOLM explained that to strengthen logistics in the context of the relocation of manufacturing centers in Mexico, it is necessary to have the work and will of the authorities.

“We need road infrastructure that is effective throughout the country, because every day we see greater saturation of roads, which limits growth. Another important point is to strengthen telecommunications and we require greater facilitation on tariff issues,” he said.

As part of the association’s work, it seeks to strengthen ties with various embassies, with the aim of encouraging greater commercial rapprochement with companies from countries such as the United States, Canada and Great Britain. “Through this approach we will be opening a window of opportunity to bring greater investments to the country and opportunities to the AOLM ,” Castro commented.

Finally, the president of AOLM explained that the private initiative has pending issues with the authorities that must be addressed , because the improvement of Mexican logistics is not an exclusive task of companies, on the contrary, it is an area that requires collaborative work. with the authorities.

“We see it necessary that there be facilities in import and export, as well as in procedures. It is essential that municipal, state and federal governments have a better understanding of business, scope and focus on the importance of logistics,” Castro stated.
