QUERÉTARO, QRO.- Sailun , a company dedicated to the manufacture of tires, is preparing a new stage of expansion in Mexico , where it plans to double the capacity of its plant located in Irapuato, Guanajuato, while analyzing an investment related to the recycling of tires and their disposal at the end of their useful life .

During their participation in the Tenth National Road Safety Congress of the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) , company representatives highlighted that Sailun already offers tires for heavy vehicles in various segments and applications, including tractor-trailers and buses, as well as equipment used in mining, agriculture, and off-road operations . Globally, the company reported the capacity to produce 34 million truck and bus tires, in addition to 511,000 tons destined for mining, agriculture, and other services.

About a year after starting operations, the facility in Irapuato is approaching full capacity, having reached around 80%, according to Cuitláhuac Zúñiga, the company’s Sales Manager.

Recycling, another front in Mexico

Alongside its production expansion plans, Sailun is analyzing a possible investment in Mexico for the recycling of end-of-life tires , given the challenges the industry faces in their disposal.

During the meeting, company representatives indicated that the proposal includes incorporating technology in Mexico that allows for the processing of tires and the separation of their different materials. According to Sailun, this type of facility is already operating in Australia and China.

“We discussed the possibility of even making an investment in Mexico to recycle consumer tires in a way that is environmentally friendly in Mexico,” Zúñiga commented.

So far, no investment amount, location, or timeframe for completing the project has been announced .

Regarding its environmental goals, the company has set a target of reducing energy consumption by 30% and water usage by 15% per unit produced by 2030, in addition to achieving 40% sustainable materials in its tires. By 2050, it projects reaching 100% of this latter indicator.

The Mexican tire market was valued at $5.38 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach $6.49 billion in 2031, according to estimates from the consulting firm Mordor Intelligence .

They confirmed that the parked tank trucks that could not be moved after the accident and due to the investigations, were carrying approximately 10 million liters of gasoline and diesel .

To date, no authorities have commented on the progress of the investigation into the incident that occurred on August 6 in Irapuato, which left at least six people dead and two injured.

At that time, the railroad company had announced that it would begin an investigation, together with the  Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) and state and municipal authorities from Irapuato, Guanajuato.

The Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office (FGEG) reported that the public prosecutor’s office has partially lifted the seizure of Ferromex’s assets and equipment “once the corresponding formalities have been completed,” which will allow the mobilization of the railway equipment involved.

“With this action, the train tracks have been cleared to allow the free passage of other railroads, thus ensuring the continuity of rail operations in the state,” he stated.

According to the agency, on August 10, Attorney General Gerardo Vázquez Alatriste, along with teams from the Public Ministry, traveled to the accident site to oversee security measures to prevent any potential contingencies.

Therefore, they established a surveillance and protection operation on the section to safeguard the integrity of the machines, cars, and their contents, in order to prevent criminal acts.

Ferromex announced that, together with the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) and state and municipal authorities of Irapuato, Guanajuato, they will begin an investigation into the accident that occurred on August 6 in the city, which left a preliminary death toll of six people and two injured.

“Company personnel have arrived on site to assist those involved in the accident, as well as to review the unit’s black box and determine the reasons why a locomotive may have become separated from the convoy,” the company said in a brief statement.

According to the Irapuato Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat, at around 11:51 a.m., a Ferromex train struck three vehicles and a motorcycle in the Europa and Primero de Mayo neighborhoods.

The agency indicated that Civil Protection rescuers, firefighters, traffic personnel, and municipal police worked at the scene to allow the injured to be transported, expedite traffic, and secure both locations so that personnel from the Guanajuato Specialized Prosecutor’s Office could take appropriate action and begin investigations.

For its part, the ARTF reported that several emergency teams responded to treat the injured and transport them to the hospital.

“The ARTF has initiated an investigation into the causes of the incident, as established in the Railway Service Regulatory Law and the Railway Service Regulations, and the corresponding sanctions will be determined in due course,” he stated.

In this regard, he indicated that he will assist the authorities in addressing this case ; he also emphasized that he is maintaining contact and coordination with the responsible company to provide support to the victims and their families.

According to data from the most recent report published by the ARTF, 66 reports of vehicle collisions were recorded last March , a 2.94% decrease compared to the same month in 2024.

While in the period from January to March 2025, 188 vehicle collisions were recorded , which meant a 5.05% drop compared to the same period last year.

The agency specified that the states with the highest number of vehicle collision reports during March 2025 were:

• Nuevo León, with 13 reports.
• Guanajuato, with 10 reports.

According to the document, the main cause of these types of reports is the driver’s “violation of traffic laws regulating intersections between roads and highways.”
