<p><span>As part of </span><strong><span>International Women&#8217;s Day in the Maritime Sector</span></strong><span> , which seeks to highlight the presence and work of women in this field, the </span><a href="https://www.gob.mx/semar"><span>Secretariat of the Navy (Semar)</span></a><span> held a commemorative ceremony where it awarded outstanding women in the sector and held a discussion about their experiences in the industry.</span></p>
<p><span>With the motto “An ocean of opportunities for women,” the ceremony was presided over by </span><strong><span>Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles</span></strong><span> , Secretary of the Navy, accompanied by Minister Norma Salomé Munguía Alvaraca, Director General for Global Affairs at the </span><a href="https://www.gob.mx/sre"><span>Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE)</span></a><span> , and Florentina Samudio Velasco, Secretary of the Board of Directors of the </span><a href="http://www.atopac.mx/"><span>Association of Terminals and Port Operators (ATOP)</span></a><span> .</span></p>
<p><span>A video was shown at the event showcasing the outstanding achievements of women in the maritime sector. In addition, recognitions were given to 10 outstanding women in the areas of maritime security, the national port system, maritime and port protection, maritime culture, the naval industry, marine natural resources, maritime trade, the national merchant marine, the marine environment, and nautical tourism.</span></p>
<h4><strong><span>They highlight work</span></strong></h4>
<p><span>Admiral Morales Ángeles reaffirmed the essential role of women in the sector and highlighted their participation in areas such as marine ecosystem protection, port security, scientific research, maritime trade, and the operation of specialized machinery. He also noted that their daily efforts are fundamental to national maritime development.</span></p>
<p><strong><span>As part of the celebration, the discussion &#8220;Inspiring Testimonies&#8221;</span></strong><span> was also organized , where various specialists shared their experiences in the maritime and port sector. This discussion served to motivate new generations of women to join this industry.</span></p>
<p><span>Participants included Tania Ortiz Mena López Negrete, president of </span><a href="https://semprainfrastructure.com/es/"><span>SEMPRA Infrastructure</span></a><span> ; María del Pilar Ostos Cetina, professor and researcher at the Mexican Navy&#8217;s Strategic Research Institute (ININVESTAM), part of the </span><a href="https://cesnav.uninav.edu.mx/cesnav/index_inicio.html"><span>Center for Advanced Naval Studies (CESNAV)</span></a><span> ; and former Senator Silvia Hernández Enríquez.</span></p>
<p><span>Every May 18th, </span><strong><span>International Women&#8217;s Day in the Maritime Sector</span></strong><span> is celebrated , after being approved within the framework of the 32nd session of the Assembly of the </span><a href="https://www.imo.org/es/About/Paginas/Default.aspx"><span>International Maritime Organization (IMO)</span></a><span> in 2021, to promote the hiring, permanence and professional growth of women in the maritime sector.</span></p>
