It will also handle domestic and international container shipments of grains, consumer goods, refrigerated products, and pet food.

The Kansas City terminal is the fourth new intermodal ramp Union Pacific has built in recent years, as part of its commitment to expanding intermodal access across its rail network. It will also help convert more truck traffic to rail, reduce congestion on the nation’s highways, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are excited to offer shippers and receivers a centralized location to meet the growing shipping demands in the Midwest. The terminal will provide shippers with convenient and cost-effective access to our 32,000-mile network, with the ability to reach Mexico, Canada, and overseas markets,” said Kenny Rocker, UP’s executive vice president of Marketing and Sales.

The new unit will include the company’s PGT gate system, which scans an operator’s equipment and speeds up the gate process, allowing carriers to quickly enter and exit the ramp.

It will also feature international and domestic container stacking operations, two new paved parking lots, and additional work lanes for maximum efficiency.

From these facilities, the company will carry out rail transfers, specialized storage, and land transportation activities , aligned with the personalized needs of its customers throughout the country.

“We began construction of our Pesquería rail freight terminal in Nuevo León. This major logistics infrastructure project will further contribute to North American trade integration,” said Alejandro Doria, company president.

The new terminal will begin operations in the second quarter of 2026. It will be the largest of its kind in Mexico and will create more than 2,300 new direct and indirect jobs.

Samuel García, governor of Nuevo León, highlighted the arrival of Bulkmatic in the state, a state that continues to grow in the industrial sector with transnational companies.

“I’m very motivated and optimistic about Nuevo León’s future. I’m grateful to Bulkmatic because today’s message about the first stone is the kind of announcement we like. This land is fertile; every dollar you invest is multiplied,” the governor added.

For his part, Emmanuel Loo, head of the state Ministry of Economy, noted that “with the arrival of companies like Bulkmatic, Nuevo León is consolidating its position as a logistics hub in Mexico, which is why we are proud to have supported them since the beginning of their operations in the state.”

To strengthen the supply chain and to address the impact of the relocation of production lines (nearshoring) , Bulkmatic de México will build a new terminal in Pesquería, Nuevo León , which is part of the more than 600 million dollars that the company has earmarked to invest in the next 10 years.

Camilo Gómez, the company’s commercial manager, said that the aim is for “the country to go in the right direction, on the right path,” hence the investment in infrastructure.

“It is an ambitious project. We want to manage what we already have, what we are strong at, but also expand our capacity to other products such as steel, paper, wood, which are commodities that we are not managing and that we see will grow exponentially with nearshoring,” he said.

The new intermodal terminal will be located on a 100-hectare site on the Cadereyta-Jimenez highway, kilometer 14, in Pesqueria, the area with the greatest industrial growth in the state. It will also be close to the airport and the KIA and Ternium plants .

Camilo Gómez said that this new infrastructure will be able to receive two unit trains of different commodities , although the focus will be on grains, and it will also store 1,300 railroad cars.

“Our largest terminal is in Tula, Hidalgo, with 380 cars, in Salinas Victoria with 230 cars, and one of the largest terminals in the Valley of Mexico has 600 or 700 cars and if I compare it with the main railway access which is in the Laredo part and which is owned by CPKC which has more than four thousand cars, which is the Patio de Sánchez, we are talking about double, the largest terminal in Mexico that has an intermodal terminal and 25% of the most important railway access in the country,” he explained.

Among other things, it will have silos for grains and minerals, tanks for petrochemicals, storage warehouses (hazardous chemicals, plastic resins), and about 23 hectares will be used for cars, steel, or other products.

Likewise, they will be connected by the CPKC de México and Ferromex tracks , “which provides competitiveness for all customers who handle their products.”

He mentioned that 10% of the 130 million tons exported by rail, that is, nearly three million tons, would be the growth that the company would be registering through new facilities.

“We are convinced that this will be a great opportunity and a major development hub for the northeastern part, which is a very important area for investments,” he said.

He said that they currently have 14 terminals nationwide , handling various products and raw materials in bulk, with an annual movement of about 45 thousand railroad cars, which translates into four million tons.

“Plans are in place by the Railway Transportation Regulatory Agency to open an intermodal terminal in Chiapas and another project near the airport, AIFA,” said Víctor Velázquez, vice president of the Railway Working Group of the Mexican Association of Freight Forwarders (Amacarga).

During the webinar “Railway Transport: Driving Nearshoring and Efficiency in Cargo Logistics” organized by the Higher Institute of Logistics Studies, he detailed that this type of infrastructure would be important due to its geographical position.

“It has quick access to the highway, there is enough space to have a covered terminal, a yard with railway tracks to allow them to carry out operations in the yard and in the covered area. It will be very interesting to see a terminal there,” he opined.

However, he emphasized the importance of the Hidalgo Intermodal Logistics Terminal (TILH), owned by Hutchison Ports, which has low demand and that “we would have to create a culture of using these terminals within the country. There’s Querétaro, Silao, San Luis Potosí, Torreón, which few people know about. They are ready to be used.”

Likewise, he commented that given the impact that nearshoring is having in the country, work should be done to modernize customs so that they are not only points of collection but also control points and to ensure that they expedite processes.

“Modernize our customs; we have problems with exports because inspections can take two or three weeks and therefore you end up missing ship departures and paying for storage and delays. We need to understand that nearshoring is just around the corner and that we are still not prepared for this,” he said.

He explained that several companies will seek to settle near ports such as Manzanillo or Veracruz, in inland customs, as well as where there are railways such as Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Monterrey, Mexico City, Toluca, Torreón, or Silao.

“They will not settle in places where it costs them more to transport their goods. People who know will seek to settle near those places and the railway will play a very important role, in addition, we see that road transport will become scarce, which we are already seeing today. The transport fleet will not be enough for us; we have to start adopting the culture of using railways,” he indicated.

He commented that in terms of security, the railway industry has made various investments to address this issue and reduce theft.

He affirmed that Mexico has a good railway connection to the United States and Canada through various routes, as well as for the domestic market. “The range of opportunities in railway service is growing,” he said.
