Finding cases of insecurity in road transport in Mexico is so common these days, although official figures mentioned that there was a 54% reduction in daily robberies, and in a less optimistic scenario it could be 20 percent.

This past weekend, on a stretch of the Maravatío-Guadalajara highway, three cars and a semi-truck with a trailer attempted to block another truck. The driver, fearing for his safety, managed to evade the roadblock they were setting up and reached the nearest tollbooth to request assistance from the state police. Incredibly, the criminals fled, but the driver was detained. Videos—in T21’s possession—show public security officers searching the inside of the semi-truck and even blocking the dashcam to prevent their actions from being recorded.

Given the reality of insecurity experienced by the freight transport sector in the country, and the coercion exerted by the federal government to prevent private organizations from updating their information, T21 Business Intelligence will conduct a quarterly survey with various transport companies to gain firsthand knowledge of the reality on national roads, beyond the official narrative.

The survey “Impact of insecurity on freight transport in Mexico”, in which companies with a combined fleet of more than 7,500 tractor-trailers responded, shows that 100% of the companies consulted have suffered a robbery, and this translates into the “Insecurity Perception Index” being at 8.65 points out of a maximum of 10.

One of the revelations of this survey is that 50% of companies have suffered more than six robberies so far this year, only 5% once and 45% between two and five times.

One finding identified by the T21 Business Intelligence exercise is that, of the companies that participated in this survey, 95% of the resignations of their operators are linked to the insecurity situation they face.

When asked about the types of incidents they experienced, the highest percentages were assault on the operator with 80% of the responses, while total theft of the unit was recorded by 70 percent.

Regarding the routes and states where the highest incidence is faced, the data coincides with that presented by various institutions such as Overhaul , identifying the most dangerous routes as Puebla–Veracruz, Mexico–Queretaro, Arco Norte, Circuito Exterior Mexiquense, Celaya–Leon, Tinaja–Cosamaloapan and Puebla–Esperanza.

When inferring the impact of insecurity on businesses, 45% of respondents identified an impact ranging from two to 10 million pesos (mdp) annually, while 15% considered that it exceeds 10 million pesos, and only 10% reported that the impact was less than 500,000 pesos.

The above scenario leads to 30% of companies reporting that they have increased rates in order to cope with losses, while 50% say they are in the process of implementing the increase.

Regarding operational implications, 70% of respondents reported an increase in operating costs exceeding 6 percent.

Meanwhile, 70% of companies stated that they have stopped operating on certain routes due to the insecurity in the country.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q. ROO. – Within the framework of the summit meeting of transport users, the National Freight Transport Forum, Daimler Truck México shared its strategy to achieve the transformation of the industry, which has various layers of attention.

Claudio de la Peña, Director of Sales and Marketing at Daimler Truck México, commented that although the members of the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) are pioneers in technological adoption issues, they must have support to identify what that route will be. .

Within the framework of the #24ANTP Forum, Daimler Truck Mexico announced that starting in 2025, the e360 will be in its product portfolio, a mid-range electric vehicle, which meets the safety standards of the most demanding companies in this matter.

Marcela Barreiro, president and CEO of the company, expressed that the incursion of this vehicle will be carried out hand in hand with customers to understand the forms of operation, types of load of the unit and the development of the ecosystem to achieve that in the total cost of operation the result is the best.

Even for the incursion of the e360 into the Mexican market, the consulting will not be charged initially to Mexican transporters , and that will be the added value that Daimler Truck México will be delivering, commented Jorge Vargas, director of Market Development and Portfolio of Product.

The managers stated that in the case of these units, they will work hand in hand with giving a full lease and although there are uncertain issues, such as the resale value, there are other certainties such as a greater length of their first useful life than It can go from eight to 10 years , achieving that the point of balance and profitability is anticipated.

The managers of Daimler Truck Mexico have anticipated that 2025 will be the time when they incorporate the Freightliner e360 into the Mexican market.

Freightliner Link Acceleration

With the aim of addressing the conditions in which motor transport operates, the launch of Enlace Freightliner 3.0 was announced, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) works to contribute to efficiency with carriers, but also to be more accurate. regarding threats.

“Enlace Freightliner 3.0 allows us to offer a solution that reduces reaction times and with greater precision, making better use of data, one of the issues is certainty and effectiveness,” shared Marcela Barreiro.

Jorge Vargas, Marcela Barreiro and Claudio de la Peña.

According to the directive, the main benefits of this version is that it has remote actions to promote the safety of operators, as well as vehicles and loads, since the best face identification is within the capabilities of the cameras. and weapons.

“The system seeks to prevent and predict asset security, where AI learns from each operation cycle, through the generation of data and new archetypes, the system is scalable and dynamic,” described Claudio de la Peña.

The update from Freightliner Link 2.0 to 3.0 will occur starting in October through the after-sales areas, while starting in 2025 it will be incorporated into the Freightliner range models.

Currently, Enlace Freightliner has more than 34,000 connected units, with nearly 1,300 customers, which together generate more than 10 billion kilometers analyzed by telemetry.

Enlace Freightliner is Daimler Truck México’s telemetry solution for the national market, given that Daimler Trucks North America’s solution did not meet the characteristics and conditions of national carriers.

For better use of technologies, Jorge Vargas identified that distributors are a key piece since they are the first contact with customers through the development of the FreightLabs platform, which allows the carrier to be more efficient, whether in its activity of planning or maintenance activities to achieve greater vehicle uptime .

Overhaul’s figures show that 20,746 cargo thefts were recorded in Mexico in 2023, with the State of Mexico remaining the entity with the highest share at 27% of the total, though it had contributed 37% in 2022.

Since the beginning of 2024, Luis Villatoro, Director of Supply Chain Security & Intelligence LATAM at Overhaul, highlighted the risk of increasing theft in some entities and the need to address this situation. Puebla, in particular, could become the entity with the most cargo thefts.

According to Luis Villatoro, the shift to other entities is driven by intervention strategies in places like the State of Mexico, forcing gangs to operate in other areas. He notes increases in Puebla and Hidalgo, where a 19% rise in crimes was recorded up to April.

“When working with authorities and coordinating actions, as has happened in the State of Mexico, it is possible to reduce thefts in that area by collaborating with the National Guard. However, this results in shifts to areas like Tepeji del Río (Hidalgo) or even San Juan del Río (Querétaro),” Villatoro points out.

Using various tools, Overhaul can identify where criminal groups operate and their exit routes, such as the Mexico-Querétaro highway and the Arco Norte, which have seen significant increases in activity.

Activity can even be identified on roads near areas like Ecatepec, such as the 132, the 57, and the Mexiquense Outer Loop (CEM).

Through standard deviation ellipse models, it is possible to determine how far or close one is to crimes and calculate distances. “In the first standard deviation, you can approximate 68.3% of the incidents, but you can manage the data and plot other deviations to reach up to a 95% probability,” described Luis Villatoro.

This strategy can be combined with “clustering,” where kilometers and routes are mapped to identify physical activity and spatial coincidences. This helps develop intervention strategies to dismantle criminal groups.

Luis Villatoro identifies four types of repetition in his strategy: spatial, focused on specific areas; temporal, based on day and hour patterns; by product type, targeting “hot products”; and finally, by type of criminal gang.
