The challenges facing the trucking and logistics industry in Mexico are not limited to insecurity , but also encompass a broader environment that combines economic uncertainty , political pressure, and structural barriers that restrict business growth, according to Eduardo Alejandro Mendoza, CEO of CM Logistics .

The weight of these factors becomes even more significant when considering that logistics costs in emerging economies like Mexico can exceed 12% to 14% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the World Bank . This level of impact amplifies the pressure on companies’ profitability and influences their investment decisions in an environment marked by volatility, trade changes, and increased operational demands.

From a business perspective, the lack of clarity in the implementation of public policies and the obstacles to realizing investments continue to generate caution. Although there is a discourse aimed at attracting capital and fostering development , these elements are now determining factors for business decisions, Mendoza explained.

At the operational level, the challenges are also reflected at the grassroots level. The creation and formalization of businesses continues to face bureaucratic processes that, in some cases, can drag on for months.

This contrast becomes even more apparent when compared to other markets. According to the executive, in countries like the United States, the process of opening a business can take just a few days, while in Mexico it can take up to three months , directly impacting the speed of business development.

In this context, companies in the sector have opted to diversify their operations to reduce risks and maintain competitiveness. The integration of logistics services throughout the supply chain has become a strategy for responding to more demanding markets with changing dynamics.

Following this logic, CM Logistics diversified its operations into various industrial sectors, expanding its reach beyond traditional transportation. The company has developed capabilities in segments such as industrial manufacturing, footwear, and machinery handling, enabling it to meet more specialized requirements.

Another adjustment is the expansion into less conventional international markets . The company has managed to operate in regions such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, reflecting a trend in the sector to explore new destinations in response to the diversification of global trade.

On an operational level, the strategy has also been geared towards greater integration of processes, from collection to final distribution, with the aim of gaining control over the operation and responding more quickly to disruptions in the supply chain.

The incorporation of technological tools and the adoption of international standards are part of the efforts to strengthen operations. Professionalizing the sector, particularly in areas such as freight forwarding and cargo management, is emerging as a key element in the face of an increasingly competitive environment.

Faced with these challenges, differentiation also depends on the ability to adapt. The company has opted for tailor-made logistics solutions , supported by innovation and technology, to respond to critical operations where delivery times are crucial—a strategy aimed at sustaining operations in an increasingly demanding environment.

“Worry about what you can control” is the premise that defines the resilience with which logistics leaders have navigated the uncertainty generated by the current situation, marked by geopolitical changes and protectionist measures in global trade , which, far from stopping the flow of goods, have reconfigured supply chains towards a regionalization model

In the panel “The Art of Leading in the Storm of Uncertainty ,” within the framework of “The 100+ Influential Figures in Transportation and Logistics ,” specialists pointed out that Mexico has overcome tariff uncertainty by becoming the largest supplier to the United States.

In December 2025 alone, Mexico consolidated its position as the main trading partner of its northern neighbor, registering an exchange of goods worth 70.521 billion dollars , according to data from the United States Census Bureau .

Given this scenario, the panelists agreed that dependence on Asia must be reduced, taking advantage of the geographical proximity to the United States and the capacity of Mexican manufacturing to strengthen the North American bloc , especially in the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) .

Innovation and agility: facing uncertainty in maritime transport

In that context, Diana Cadena , commercial manager of Hutchison Ports ICAVE , and Víctor Monroy , general manager for Mexico and Central America of MSC , spoke from their experience in the maritime sector, highlighting the importance of innovation and agility in port operations.

Cadena cited Bahía Norte in Veracruz as an example of innovation, noting that it was the first joint venture between a port authority and a private company in Mexico. “Without this vision, this joint venture, the port of Veracruz wouldn’t be able to receive the ships it does today. Proof of this is that in January of this year we received the largest ship to ever enter the port, measuring 350 meters in length,” he explained.

He explained that port infrastructure has demonstrated that innovation is the engine of profitability and recalled that the Veracruz terminal went from handling 70,000 TEUs (20-foot containers) in 1995 to more than one million TEUs annually today, attributed to an operational discipline that integrates sustainable technologies, such as electric cranes and automated systems, to compete in the global market.

He also considered that the cost of logistics must be understood, since a plant shutdown or disruption can generate large economic losses

Monroy emphasized that uncertainty is a factor that is always present in logistics and other areas, such as politics, and that the best way to counteract it is for shipping companies to be flexible and agile in responding to the needs of the sector.

“We need to be able to respond quickly to the new needs that a market generates. Despite all the geopolitical issues of last year, despite the issue of tariffs, world trade did not stop, it did not stall, it even grew,” Monroy emphasized.

He said that when flows from Asia to the United States slowed considerably, those flows began to migrate to other markets, “and we were able to mobilize our fleet, so that those markets that needed that support were served in an agile and rapid manner.”

The railway sector and its opening to other markets

In the railway sector, uncertainty has worked in its favor, as it has opened up new niches and shifted from a globalized approach to one focused on regions.

Oscar Del Cueto , president of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico , stated that the railroad presented an opportunity for new markets, such as the one from Canada to Mexico.

“Today we are creating this ‘ land bridge ,’ as we call it. We transport products from Canada across the United States, they pay us tariffs, they pay us taxes, and we reach a new market that didn’t exist in Mexico and where there is demand. We are talking about grain, wheat that we are bringing from Canada to the Mexican market, passing through the United States without any problem, because we have this connectivity network,” he explained.

Other products include LP gas and plastics. We are also shipping household appliances made in our country via rail. The automotive market, where we already had some shipments from Mexico to Canada, has now grown. So, I think there are opportunities. This is the world we live in; there is a lot of uncertainty, but I believe it also presents us with opportunities.

He emphasized that the railroad is entering markets traditionally dominated by trucking, such as refrigerated goods , by leveraging the network that connects the three USMCA countries. The goal is to make the border between Mexico and the United States as efficient as the one between the US and Canada.

He asserted that to overcome uncertainty, one must focus on what can be controlled to strengthen the North American bloc.

“Worry about what you can control, don’t worry about what you can’t control. There’s a lot out there that we can’t control, but there are things that we can. The flows don’t stop; what can change are the markets,” he pointed out.

Road transport, with structural challenges

According to the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Manufacturers (ANPACT) , more than 80% of the goods that move in Mexico travel by road, making road transport the backbone of the national economy.

In that context, Raúl Monroy , president of Grupo TMS (Transportes Monroy Schiavon) – number 12 in the Top 100 of Motor Transport® – considered that, although motor transport is a key factor for products to reach their destination efficiently and safely, this sector faces critical structural challenges to absorb regional growth.

In that regard, he warned that there is a limited road infrastructure , which is compounded by a shortage of operators, which could hinder economic development.

According to the National Chamber of Freight Transportation (Canacar) , Mexico has a shortage of more than 90,000 operators —which keeps the same number of tractor-trailers idle—a situation that could worsen in the coming years, since if the trend continues, by 2028 the figure could exceed 110,000 operators.

He warned that another problem in the sector is the constant disruptions at toll booths, which increase transit times by 20 to 25 percent. These “hidden costs” reduce operator productivity and the utilization of equipment.

Monroy also pointed out that regionalization represents a great opportunity for transportation in Mexico. “The United States and Canada are our main trading partners, and Mexico has now become the United States’ main trading partner, so this will inevitably impact us with more movement, new challenges, and more routes.”

For his part, Jorge Machuca , leader of the Latin American Engine Segment at Cummins , stressed the importance of constant dialogue with the federal government to resolve critical infrastructure problems, such as the saturation of Highway 57 – which runs through much of Mexico, from the border with the United States in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, to Mexico City – and to define a path towards decarbonization.

In this edition of The 100+ Most Influential People in Transportation and Logistics , the message was clear. Leaders in the logistics sector agreed that supply chains must transition from reactive to predictive and forward-looking management models, with supply chains becoming increasingly regionalized, in a clear effort to strengthen and boost the North American bloc.

Talent, artificial intelligence, and emotional salary

Human talent management remains a strategic priority. Nearly 70% of companies plan to modify their workforce , reducing automatable positions and strengthening strategic areas such as sales, customer service, and high-value operations.

The study confirmed that artificial intelligence (AI) will not replace human talent , but rather those who fail to prepare to integrate it. In this context, emotional salary, work flexibility, career development plans, and technological training are gaining importance compared to traditional compensation schemes.

For his part, Gerardo Rojas , lead partner of Advisory at KPMG Mexico, highlighted that companies are leaving behind reactive innovation to survive and are moving towards strategies aimed at improving the customer experience, generating new revenue and developing business solutions .

Risk management is evolving towards a more holistic approach, encompassing intangible risks such as loss of relevance, changes in consumer habits, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. Currently, 71% of companies already incorporate ESG criteria into their risk management , a trend that is expected to continue rising in light of future reporting obligations and increased scrutiny.

“The greatest risk may be complacency,” Rojas warned, emphasizing the importance of updating risk plans and conducting materiality analyses appropriate to the sector and size of each organization.

Mexico, resilient in the face of disruption

Despite global volatility, the study concluded that Mexico maintains key attributes for attracting investment: geographic location, competitive workforce, and economic openness. Meanwhile, the review of the USMCA could become a catalyst for strengthening regional value chains , once the rules of the game are defined.

In short, top management in Mexico faces 2026 with prudence, but also with a clear conviction: investing in innovation, talent and resilience is essential to grow in an environment of constant disruption .

The Mexican market has also spawned its own developments, Puente commented. The engine immobilizer was developed in Mexico, designed to respond to local security risks . Upon detecting a critical event, the unit is locked and prevents further movement. The product has already begun to be marketed in other countries as an example of innovation with global impact, Puente emphasized.

Beyond the technology, the human element remains central. Puente said these tools give confidence to operators and their families. In some cases, video recordings have served to demonstrate that operators complied with safety regulations , exonerating them in accidents.

The shortage of operators is also a challenge for the industry. In 2024 alone, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) estimated a shortage of 99,000 job openings in Mexico .

In this context, the priority cannot be limited to protecting cargo: it must extend to caring for operators, who are key to the continuity of operations, Puente emphasized.

In an environment marked by insecurity and a lack of operators, AI is an everyday resource. Samsara fits into that dynamic with solutions that seek security and trust for those who drive the country, Puente concluded.

With more than 78 years of history in Mexico, Javier Lostao, Business Director of Consumer Group Mexico, emphasized that 3M is a diversified company whose main objective is innovation, and that 60% of the company’s consumer business is produced in Mexican plants.

“Mexico is not just a manufacturing center, it’s a technological hub of global importance,” he emphasized.

3M is a global company dedicated to the science of everyday life, founded more than 120 years ago in the United States. The company has grown into a diversified conglomerate operating in sectors such as transportation and electronics, industrial safety, healthcare, and consumer products , with a portfolio that includes more than 60,000 products, many of which are present in everyday life, from adhesive tapes, Post-it notes, and Scotch-Brite fibers.

In this sense, with a presence in San Luis Potosí, Ciudad Juárez and Ensenada , 3M plants supply both the local market and various countries in America.

The company also highlighted its efforts in the circular economy and sustainability , reincorporating between 5% and 40% of production waste into new processes, and promoting the transition to recycled packaging and less plastic use.

In terms of logistics, the combination of advanced manufacturing and automated processes has allowed for reduced production, packaging, and distribution times, increasing supply efficiency both in Mexico and abroad.

In an era of constant transformation, innovation has ceased to be an option and has become a requirement for survival. This is one of the main conclusions of the report ” Innovation Panorama in Mexico and Central America 2025 ,” prepared by KPMG , a professional services firm specializing in auditing, tax, and consulting, based on a survey of more than 100 executives from companies across various sectors.

“The 20th century was the century of innovation, but the 21st century seems to have come to ridicule it. In just 25 years, we have seen technological disruption like never before. Companies understood, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, that innovation is not just about reacting or surviving, but about staying relevant,” said Ricardo Delfín , leading partner of Clients and Markets for the Mexico and Central America Cluster at KPMG.

According to the report, 71 % of Mexican companies are already undergoing a digital transformation process , while 8% plan to begin it in less than a year.

This level of maturity is also reflected in technological priorities: Artificial Intelligence (AI), omnichannel models, and self-service platforms , which are leading strategies for redesigning products, services, and channels.

“Today, innovation is no longer a question of whether or not to do it, but rather when and how. Innovation cycles have become so short that they now change in a matter of months,” said Diego Bojórquez , Innovation Manager at KPMG Ignition Mexico.

Furthermore, 75 % of companies in Mexico will significantly change their products or services in the next three years , and of these, 72% will do so by incorporating new technologies.

Although Central America shares a similar vision of the importance of innovation, it still faces a slower adoption rate.

Only half of companies in that region are currently undergoing a digital transformation, although 16% plan to begin it soon.

“We recognize significant numerical differences. For example, in Central America, 52% plan to offer self-service platforms and 34% plan to focus on customer-centric models, higher figures than Mexico because they are just beginning this journey,” explained Luis Rivera , Consulting Partner at KPMG Costa Rica.

One of the key findings is the ambivalent role played by innovation culture. In Mexico, 67% recognize it as a facilitator , but 28% of respondents also see it as a barrier.

In Central America, this contradiction is more pronounced, with 53% viewing it positively, but 44% identifying it as an obstacle.

“For innovation to flourish, employees must feel confident proposing ideas without fear of consequences. A culture of innovation requires committed leadership, adequate incentives, and dedicated spaces for innovation,” said Diego Bojórquez.

AI (generative and analytical), cloud, automation, and low-code are emerging as the most impactful technologies. However, barriers persist, such as a lack of skills (36%) and limited access to emerging technologies (38%) are identified as the main challenges.

“Many companies fear the arrival of a disruptive technology that will push them out of the market. That’s why innovation becomes part of business DNA, a mechanism not only to grow, but also to avoid disappearing,” warned Ricardo Delfín.

According to KPMG, companies that fail to transform risk being left out of the game. To achieve this, they must cultivate a strong culture of innovation, invest in emerging technologies, and foster an open mindset toward change.

I got in, closed the door, and the vehicle, a white Jaguar I-PACE , moved off as if it had a mind of its own, carefully obeying every signal.

We moved through the streets of Austin, every brake was precise, every curve millimetric.

When we arrived at our destination, the car stopped and wished me a good day, while the door unlocked automatically.

I got off the unit still feeling like I had experienced something that until a few years ago seemed like science fiction; the future had not only arrived, it had taken me for a ride .

But would these types of technologies be viable in Mexico? I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if one of these vehicles were to circulate in the chaotic Mexico City, where lack of infrastructure, traffic, and poor road safety are the order of the day.

In the United States, few cities already have this technology. Waymo , for example, only offers service through Uber in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin , and will soon offer Atlanta and Miami, while companies like Volkswagen are already looking to offer this same service in some cities.

In Mexico, electromobility is just gaining ground. However, in conversation with an interviewee, he mentioned Mexico’s great potential in the aerospace industry, where even flying vehicles are being developed.

In this regard, the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG) has described in an article that the development of autonomous mobility and its mass adoption face significant regulatory and ethical challenges , especially in countries like Mexico.

However, Erick Eduardo Guzmán Quezada, a professor and researcher at the UAG and an expert in artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, highlighted in the article that the implementation of autonomous cars in Mexico could revolutionize road safety.

The landscape for freight transport is no different. Although brands like International and Volvo have already developed this type of technology for heavy-duty vehicles, testing continues in countries like the United States, which has better infrastructure.

Global mobility is advancing by leaps and bounds. Will we be able to adapt to ever-increasing technology and innovation?

Geotab continues to promote telematics solutions in Mexico with a focus on safety, cost reduction, and resource optimization for its customers.

In an interview with T21, José Liborio Calderón, Geotab’s country manager , detailed his main initiatives and strategic alliances that improve efficiency and sustainability in fleet management.

Geotab developed a technology platform that provides real-time visibilityinto fleet status, improving road safety and protecting company assets.

Through its telematics solutions, the company offers tools that identify risky driving habits, such as harsh braking or distracted driving, and issue alerts to prevent incidents.

“The platform not only helps reduce costs through preventative maintenance, but also allows us to monitor driver behavior and ensure that vehicles remain operational for as long as possible,” Calderón explained.

A success story in innovation and sustainability

Grupo Bimbo was recognized at the Geotab Innovation Awards for its focus on sustainability and operational efficiency. The company implemented telematics solutions for its fleet management in Mexico and other countries in the region, including Honduras, El Salvador, and Chile.

“Bimbo has a clear goal for 2030: to achieve 50% electric or low-emission fleets. With our platform, they can manage routes, maintenance, and productivity, helping them advance their transformation strategy toward more sustainable mobility,” Calderón emphasized.

Geotab’s achievements also include its integration with General Motors (GM) for light vehicles in Mexico, which will allow companies to access telematics solutions without the need for additional devices.

This integration will facilitate the collection of data directly from vehicles, optimizing their performance and reducing operating costs.

GM-integrated telematics offers key benefits, such as faster installation because the units come pre-equipped with telematics devices from the factory. This allows access to real-time data without the need to install additional hardware. Additionally, compatibility with the manufacturer is guaranteed, avoiding warranty issues and ensuring that the information obtained is accurate and directly extracted from the vehicle’s system.

Four years leading the world in telematics

For the fourth consecutive year , Geotab has been recognized by ABI Research as the number one telematics provider worldwide . Among the factors that have helped it maintain this leadership position are its focus on innovation, its big data analytics capabilities , and the development of solutions tailored to diverse industries.

“We are a family business. A company that has dedicated the last 25 years to generating a very robust value proposition in telematics. Year after year, we are investing a significant amount of resources in updating the platform,” Calderón explained.

Additionally, Geotab’s 2024 Sustainability Report highlighted how the company supports its customers in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to greener fleets. Tools such as energy efficiency analysis and smart route management have been key in this process.

In addition, the company launched the Fill the Fleet promotion , designed to facilitate the adoption of telematics solutions by new fleets.

“For all current customers, Fill The Fleet is a promotion valid until June 30th. It consists of the free adoption of the cameras, for which you will only pay the monthly subscription price,” explained Calderón.

The company also ventured into new areas, such as sponsoring pilot Majo Rodríguez, reflecting its commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility.

In recent years, Geotab has experienced sustained growth in the country , with significant expansion in its customer base and connected vehicle subscriptions.

The company expects this trend to continue in the coming years, driven by digitalization and the growing demand for telematics solutions in the sector.

Geotab remains committed to innovation and development in Mexico , focusing on providing tools that improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of business operations. As a strategic market, the country represents a key opportunity to strengthen technological solutions that drive growth and competitiveness.

Finally, Calderón emphasized that in the company, each member is part of a high-performance team, where perseverance and discipline are essential for success.

He compared their training routine to soccer, pointing out that receiving the ball is just the beginning, and that what’s truly important is how they play. Therefore, he emphasized that they strive daily to be in top form and ensure that every action brings them closer to their goals.

He also emphasized that his commitment extends not only internally but also to customers and distributors, whom he considers an essential part of the team. Ultimately, he explained, “true success lies in moving forward together.”
