Paradigm shifts and comprehensive training are key to improving road safety.

SAN JUAN DEL RÍO, QRO.- Every 30 seconds, a life is lost worldwide in a traffic accident. The statistic takes on an even more alarming tone when we consider that a third of these deaths are linked to work-related accidents. This was the starting point shared by Jorge Jacobo , CEO of CEPA Mobility , to gauge the urgency of a paradigm shift in road safety.

Among the proposals presented at the 9th National Road Safety Congress of the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) , Jacabo emphasized analyzing the entire chain leading to an accident, not just the driver behind the wheel. For him, focusing solely on speed or human error is insufficient if loading delays, customer decisions, and route planning are not reviewed .

With a systemic approach, he argued, the operator can be prevented from becoming the weakest link. He also emphasized that the operator crisis is real. He said that only 6.5% are under 25 years old and more than 40% are over 50, which requires redesigning conditions that make this profession a dignified and sustainable option.

From a business perspective, Tania Hurtado , Head of Safety at Oxxo Distribución , explained how the company has developed a management model based on four pillars: training, motivation, supervision and accident investigation .

In a country with an estimated deficit of 99,000 operators by 2024, according to specialists, Oxxo has opted to train new operators with four-month programs, driving simulators, and certification processes by route type.

“Leadership commitment is essential,” Hurtado said, highlighting that recertification every two years and recognition of family efforts are key elements in building a culture of safety.

A look from experience

Clara Fragoso , a tractor-trailer operator with more than 20 years of experience, said the industry taught her how to take care of diesel and tires, but never how to take care of herself.

The lack of comprehensive training , he said, pushed many operators to use substances to endure the workdays.

“We don’t go out to be monitored, but because we want this to change. We need to learn to manage our emotions, our diet, and our sleep,” she stated firmly.

Her experience in the United States convinced her that Mexico has the tools to replicate more humane and safer models; however, she believes it requires coordination and will, both from the sector and government authorities.

In the same vein, Yair Valero , founder of Grupo Innovazione , warned that many programs fail because they treat the operator as a material resource and not as a person.

He shared the case of a client where operators were given a 12-hour notice for loading and had to wait another 12 hours to leave, which forced them to violate speed limits.

After renegotiating more realistic times with the client , that route was no longer critical in accidents. For Valero, rest and basic needs must be at the heart of any strategy.

In this regard, Santiago Flores , representing Métrica Móvil , explained that there is no point in generating thousands of data points if they are not converted into useful information for operators and supervisors.

He explained that the proper use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can save up to 93% of administrative time and reduce speeding incidents by 85% with real-time feedback.

“It’s not about monitoring the operator, but rather about educating with reliable and timely information,” Flores emphasized.

For his part, Israel Sandoval Ponce , of Grupo Bimbo , concluded that road safety can only be sustained when technology is accompanied by education and culture , and when the operator stops being seen as a disposable resource to become the axis of a safe and humane logistics chain.

“Nomads of 57”, a dialogue route on the reality of operators

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, trucking operators were hailed as heroes without capes, but that moment of widespread recognition seems to be returning to its normality , and the adverse situation they face in their operations is once again a reality.

Grueling work days, adverse conditions, and, at times, little or no support from their employers to provide them with the necessary resources to boost their operations are the factors that prevail throughout the documentary “Nomads of the 57th,” which from the start generates emotions and invites reflection on the importance of trucking operators.

“Nomads of the 57th,” directed by Alberto Arnaut and José María Castro, and produced by Yuli Rodríguez, stars “Luz de Luna Clara,” the alter ego of Clara Fragoso, a professional trucking operator who found her path to fulfillment in this industry and a way out of a winding life. Clara Fragoso is as firm as she is behind the wheel when she says that “Nomads of the 57th” is a message for drivers to become more aware of their lives, that they should demand information and that comprehensive training should be provided. “They should be taught to take care of their health, their dreams, their money, their emotions. What they should understand is that their work is not a sacrifice,” she emphasized.

Throughout the experiences that Clara Fragoso shares in this documentary, she raises the urgency of changing the mentality of operators regarding the prevailing working conditions, where they must strive to improve their work environments, as a way to drive change in this industry, which not only depends on trucking entrepreneurs, but also on those who use the service, the owners of the cargo.

“‘Nomads of 57’ is a space to open a dialogue about the incursion, to stop stigmatizing the operator and to open a dialogue about the genuine interest in the importance of the operator’s activity and what they need,” said Yair Valero, CEO of Grupo Innovazione , during the presentation of this documentary to various stakeholders.

Through “Nomads of the 57,” Innovazione aims to reach five different stakeholder groups : “ operators, to break down misconceptions about the industry; company owners (transporters) , to offer better working conditions; freight generators , to create a better environment; authorities , to provide infrastructure such as bus stops; and the fifth favor is for society at large , to stop stigmatizing them as truckers,” emphasized Irma Herrera, Commercial and Institutional Relations Director of Grupo Innovazione.

Alberto Arnaut described traveling more than 15,000 kilometers to capture the images needed to reach the destination of “Nomads of 57,” which gave them a firsthand look at the hostile environment they face, the distance they experience from their families, and the arduous workdays they endure in order to provide financial support for all their dependents.

“It’s a phrase Clara mentioned to us at some point during the recording: operators don’t just transport goods; they transport their lives. That’s where this documentary comes in handy,” Arnaut emphasized.

Forum of Women Leaders of the Auto Transport Industry, second edition arrives in September

On September 5, Mexico City will host the 2nd Forum of Women Leaders in the Automotive Transport Industry (MLA) , an event that seeks to strengthen the female presence in the industry and promote leadership through knowledge and collaboration.

With the motto “ Together we are stronger ”, the initiative led by Arlette Casco Ruiz, founder and CEO of the MLA, aims to establish itself as a key space for meeting, training and networking for women in the sector.

“We seek to consolidate the Women Leaders of Auto Transport project as an annual event. An event that women in the industry seek out year after year, so that it is a space dedicated to us, to learn, to give feedback, to know what we as women are doing without leaving behind the talent of men,” Casco commented.

This edition is expected to attract 250 to 300 people , and will be hosted at the Marquis Hotel, with the participation of leading figures in the sector and the support of key brands.

The forum will feature four main conferences , each developed in conjunction with a sponsoring company and a female industry leader. Topics will address collaboration between suppliers and carriers to strengthen the sector, strategies and challenges that women have overcome to establish themselves in the trucking industry , and there will be space for networking, awards, and more.

The companies supporting these conferences include Grupo Innovazione , Motum , Scania and Redes Envía . There will also be interactive dynamics , such as an international roundtable with transport specialists in the United States and expanded access to post-event content through a new digital platform.

Recognition of female talent in transport

Casco commented that one of the most anticipated moments of the event will be the presentation of the 2024 Women Leaders in Motor Transport Awards , which seek to highlight the career, innovation and leadership of women in different areas of the sector. On this occasion, the categories include:

MLA 2024: Recognition of a leading woman in the motor transport industry for her career and contribution to the industry through innovation and good practices.
MLA Professional 2024: For those women who, from an administrative or strategic perspective, have promoted improvements in logistics and transportation.
MLA Revelation 2024: Aimed at women under 35 years of age and with at least three years of experience in the industry who have stood out in their work.
MLA Career in Logistics 2024: To recognize the contribution of women in the field of logistics throughout their careers, highlighting their impact on the industry and on new generations.

“We want these awards to be a benchmark and a goal to be achieved by new generations of women seeking to develop in this sector,” said Casco Ruiz.

The Forum will also feature the participation of prominent leaders in the sector, including Patricia Vizcaya, Legal and Regulatory Director of the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP) , and Alexia González, President of the Youth Committee of the National Chamber of Cargo Transport (Canacar) , who will share their experience and vision on the role of women in the auto transport industry.

Arlette Casco said that the Forum of Women Leaders in the Auto Transport Industry seeks to consolidate itself as a platform with long-term impact. She also invited women in the sector to participate in the event and clarified that the invitation is also open to men.
