Inflation in Mexico, which continues to rise and reached 4.63% annually in the first half of March 2026, has caused, along with factors such as a slowdown in the Mexican economy, a deterioration in the perception that families have about their financial situation.

In that context, the Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI), based on the results of the National Survey on Consumer Confidence (ENCO), reached 44.1 points in the third month of the year , which represented a decrease of 0.3 units compared to February 2016, according to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) and the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) .

In its year-on-year comparison and with seasonally adjusted figures, the ICC also showed a slowdown, registering a drop of 2 points in March 2026.

During March, the component that measures the current possibilities of household members, compared to those of a year ago, to make purchases of furniture, television, washing machine, among others , decreased by 1.2 monthly points.

Meanwhile, the country’s current economic situation, compared to 12 months ago , has declined by 1.2 points month-on-month. Similarly, the expected economic situation of household members in 12 months, compared to the present , fell by 0.5 points in March 2026 compared to last February.

The component that measures the current economic situation of household members compared to what it was 12 months ago decreased by 0.2 units on a monthly basis.

The category that captures expectations about the country’s economic situation expected within 12 months compared to the current situation remained unchanged in its monthly measurement.

On an annual basis, all five components of the ICC fell , with the expected economic situation of the country in 12 months compared to the current one showing the greatest decrease at 3.5 points.

Data from INEGI reveals consumer concern about Mexico’s current economic situation, which, according to financial institutions and analysts, remains moderate amid rising inflation.

The country’s economic outlook is not encouraging . Along those lines, the most recent Citi Mexico Expectations Survey indicated that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for this year has been reduced to 1.4% from the 1.5% projected in the previous survey.

In the first half of February 2026, the annual general inflation rate in Mexico was 3.92% , due to the increase in the cost of some agricultural products such as lemons and tomatoes, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

According to the agency, in the reference period, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) increased 0.25% compared to the previous two weeks , thus maintaining the upward trend recorded at the beginning of 2026.

“The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) showed its largest variation for the first half of February in three years. The pressure originated from the non-core index, where the rise in fruits and vegetables overshadowed the declines in livestock and energy products,” the Financial Group Ve por Más (BX+) noted in an analysis.

The core inflation index , which excludes goods and services with more volatile prices or those not responsive to market conditions, rose 0.22% on a bi-weekly basis. Within this index, goods prices increased 0.20% and services prices 0.24%.

“The underlying inflation rate was the lowest for the same fortnight since 2021, thanks to slightly lower than usual growth in non-food goods, while in services there was some pressure in education, which is usual at the beginning of each year,” BX+ said.

According to INEGI, the non-core price index , which includes goods and services whose prices are subject to fluctuations, rose 0.32 percent on a bi-weekly basis.
According to the analysis by Grupo Financiero Ve por Más, the inflationary outlook is still complex, as the economy will face less slack and wage pressures.

Mexicans’ pockets continue to suffer from skyrocketing inflation due to the rise in prices for some basic staples, such as tomatoes and chicken, making even preparing a Mexican dish difficult for some consumers.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) , which measures the variation in prices of a basket of goods and services, stood at 4.42% in May 2025 compared to its annual comparison.

With this result in the fifth month of the year, the INPC had an increase for the fourth consecutive month at an annual rate , which is the highest record since November 2024, when it reached 4.55 percent.

In the reference period, the National Consumer Price Index reported a monthly increase of 0.28% , while the underlying price index , which excludes goods and services with more volatile prices or that do not respond to market conditions, increased 0.30% on a monthly basis, with an increase in the price of merchandise of 0.35% and of services of 0.24 percent .

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicated that among the states with the largest increases in the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INPC) were Tabasco, with 1.06 percent; Hidalgo, with 1.03 percent; and Oaxaca, with 1.01 percent.

The inflationary scenario in Mexico is part of the complex situation facing the national economy, also stemming from the uncertainty surrounding global tariffs.

The INPC has been on the rise. Last April, this indicator stood at 3.93% , and in the first half of May, it reached 4.22% .

On May 28, the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) , in its Quarterly Report, lowered its economic growth forecast for the country from 0.6% to 0.1% for 2025.

Among its estimates, the central bank reiterated that its 3% inflation target could be reached by the third quarter of 2026 , reflecting the current complex economic environment, which is likely to extend into next year.

Sonora, Sinaloa, and Baja California Sur showed variations below the national average, with decreases of 3.09%, 2.77%, and 1.47%, respectively.

For its part, the financial institution Ve por más estimated that year-on-year growth in the CPI could close the year slightly below current levels, noting that upside risks and significant uncertainty about the outlook remain.

In his analysis of inflation for the first half of 2025, he indicated that the core index has risen for four fortnights and reached its highest level since last August. “The pressure has come from the merchandise category, which showed its strongest growth in a year.”

He emphasized that the non-core index was significantly pressured. “The largest increase was seen in livestock products, while energy products accelerated to a lesser extent.”

The institution noted that inflation has trended upward this year and has already exceeded the Bank of Mexico’s (Banxico) tolerance range . “This, along with recent adjustments to the ex ante real rate, suggests that the monetary policy stance should be adjusted more cautiously going forward. This decreases the likelihood of another 50-basis-point cut in the target rate for the June meeting.”

In response, analysts have pointed out that Mexico’s economic outlook for this year faces significant challenges due to the uncertainty generated by the U.S. tariff war, which has spread throughout the world.

In the first half of February 2025, the increase in the cost of some products such as eggs, beef and pork accelerated the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) , which measures the variation in the prices of a basket of goods and services, to place it at 3.74% annually , according to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) published this Monday.

The agency detailed that in the reference period, the INPC reported a biweekly variation of 0.15% in the first half of the second month of the year, while the underlying price index , which excludes goods and services with more volatile prices or that do not respond to market conditions, increased 0.27% at a biweekly rate, with an increase in the price of merchandise with 0.21% and of services with 0.32 percent .

Within this, the prices of agricultural products decreased by 0.81% and those of energy and government-authorized tariffs increased by 0.18 percent .

Among the products that registered increases in the period are bananas with 5.74% , eggs with 5.28% , beef with an increase of 1.11% , and pork with an increase of 1.01 percent .

Among the entities with the greatest increases in the INPC are Michoacán and Durango, each with 0.42% , Guanajuato with 0.37% , Coahuila with 0.34% and Chihuahua with 0.33 percent .

Meanwhile, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Tabasco had variations below the national average, with decreases of 0.12% , 0.11% and 0.06% , respectively.

According to these figures, after six fortnights with downward reports, the INPC for the first half of February had its highest level since the second half of December 2024.

In this context, analysts have warned that the economic outlook in Mexico for this year will be moderate and with significant challenges arising from political uncertainty, both in the country and in the United States, whose government, headed by President Donald Trump , seeks to impose tariffs of up to 25% on Mexico, a measure that was paused for a month after it came into effect on February 4.
