<p><span dir="auto">Private consumption in Mexico had mixed results in February 2026, according to the results of the Monthly Indicator of Private Consumption (IMCP), prepared by the </span><a href="https://www.inegi.org.mx/"><span dir="auto">National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi)</span></a><span dir="auto"> .</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In the second month of the year, the IMCP, which allows us to know the evolution of household spending on consumer goods and services, both of national origin and imported, </span><strong><span dir="auto">fell 0.5% on a monthly basis</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , while </span><strong><span dir="auto">in its annual measurement it grew 0.9 percent</span></strong><span dir="auto"> .</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">According to seasonally adjusted figures and monthly rates, consumption of imported goods increased by 1.9%, and consumption of domestically produced goods and services decreased by 0.7%.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In its year-on-year comparison, spending on domestic goods and services decreased by 1.5% and spending on imported goods increased by 11.7%.</span></p>

<p><span dir="auto">According to analysts, </span><strong><span dir="auto">domestic consumption is still not showing clear signs of recovery</span></strong><span dir="auto">  after a 2025 with ups and downs in this indicator and a stumbling start to the year.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">According to estimates from </span><a href="https://www.bancobase.com/"><span dir="auto">Grupo Financiero BASE</span></a><span dir="auto"> , by 2026 private consumption, which is one of the main components of the Mexican Gross Domestic Product (GDP), could grow between 1.8% and 2.2 percent.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">This increase would be driven by the World Cup and a greater number of tourists arriving in Mexico for the sporting event.</span></p>

<p><span dir="auto">In the tenth month of last year, the indicator stood at  </span><strong><span dir="auto">113.5 points</span></strong><span dir="auto"> . In its annual measurement, private consumption increased by 4.1% in the reference period.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">According to seasonally adjusted figures and monthly rates,  </span><strong><span dir="auto">consumption of </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">domestically produced goods and services </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">showed no change during the economic cycle</span></strong><span dir="auto"> . Goods fell by 0.2%, while services increased by 0.4%. As for </span><strong><span dir="auto">imported goods, consumption rose by 6.6%</span></strong><span dir="auto">  in October 2025 compared to the previous month.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">On an annual basis, spending on domestic goods and services grew 1.2% and spending on imported goods increased 20.6%.</span></p>

<p><span dir="auto">Mexicans continue to show caution when purchasing goods and services, which affected private consumption in September 2025, which remained unchanged compared to August after three months of increases, the </span><a href="https://www.inegi.org.mx/"><span dir="auto">National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi)</span></a><span dir="auto"> announced .</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In the reference month, the </span><strong><span dir="auto">Monthly Indicator of Private Consumption (IMCP)</span></strong><span dir="auto"> stood at  </span><strong><span dir="auto">112.4 points</span></strong><span dir="auto"> . In its year-on-year comparison, private consumption increased </span><strong><span dir="auto">by 2.1%</span></strong><span dir="auto"> in the ninth month of 2025.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">According to seasonally adjusted figures and monthly rates,  </span><strong><span dir="auto">the consumption of </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">goods and services of national </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">and imported origin did not register any variation</span></strong><span dir="auto"> .</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In its year-on-year comparison, spending on domestic goods and services rose </span><strong><span dir="auto">0.5%</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , while spending on imported goods increased by </span><strong><span dir="auto">9.1%</span></strong><span dir="auto"> .</span></p>

<p><span dir="auto">Factors such as inflation, slower growth, low employment expectations, and external pressures have impacted consumer confidence, leading to reduced spending, according to the consultancy </span><a href="https://www.kantar.com/latin-america"><span dir="auto">Kantar</span></a><span dir="auto"> .</span></p>

<p><span dir="auto">The increase in the purchase of domestic and foreign products resulted in a 0.6% increase in private consumption in Mexico during August 2025 compared to last July, according to the </span><strong><span dir="auto">Monthly Indicator of Private Consumption (IMCP)</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , prepared by the  </span><a href="https://www.inegi.org.mx/"><span dir="auto">National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), which</span></a><span dir="auto"> was released this Wednesday .</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">This increase marked the </span><strong><span dir="auto">fourth monthly advance of the IMCP so far this year </span></strong><strong><span dir="auto">and also reflected the positive evolution of household spending </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">on goods and services</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , despite the country&#8217;s economic volatility.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In the reference month, the indicator stood at </span><strong><span dir="auto">112.1 points</span></strong><span dir="auto"> . In its year-on-year comparison, private consumption increased by 0.9% in the eighth month of 2025.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">Measuring private consumption is important because it represents the spending by Mexican families on the purchase of goods and services, making it a key indicator of the economy.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">According to seasonally adjusted figures and monthly rates, </span><strong><span dir="auto">consumption of </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">domestically produced goods and services </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">increased by 0.8 percent</span></strong><span dir="auto"> . Goods saw a 1.3% increase, while services rose by 0.2 percent. As for  </span><strong><span dir="auto">imported goods, consumption increased by 0.3%</span></strong><span dir="auto"> in August of this year compared to the previous month.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In its annual measurement, spending on domestic goods and services grew 0.3% and spending on imported goods advanced 4.4 percent.</span></p>

<p><span dir="auto">After a drop last July, private consumption rebounded in August, driven by the return to school, </span><a href="https://www.bbvaresearch.com/"><span dir="auto">BBVA Research</span></a><span dir="auto"> estimated , noting that, although the increase represents a respite for this segment of economic activity, &#8220;it is not enough to consolidate a sign of recovery towards the second half of the year, particularly given the continued deterioration of consumer confidence.&#8221;</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span dir="auto">According to Inegi, &#8220;the Monthly Indicator of Private Consumption measures the spending behavior of households on consumer goods and services, both of national and imported origin.&#8221;</span></p></blockquote>
<h4><strong><span dir="auto">Consumer confidence declines in October</span></strong></h4>
<p><span dir="auto">According to data from Inegi and the  </span><a href="https://www.banxico.org.mx/"><span dir="auto">Bank of Mexico (Banxico)</span></a><span dir="auto"> , the  </span><strong><span dir="auto">Consumer Confidence Indicator (ICC)</span></strong><span dir="auto"> reached  </span><strong><span dir="auto">46.1 points </span></strong><span dir="auto"> in October 2025, representing a drop of </span><strong><span dir="auto"> 0.3 units </span></strong><span dir="auto"> compared to last September, while at an annual rate and with seasonally adjusted figures, the indicator registered a decrease of  </span><strong><span dir="auto">3.2 points</span></strong><span dir="auto">  in the period.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In the reference month, the component that measures the </span><strong><span dir="auto">current economic situation of household members compared to what it was 12 months ago</span></strong><span dir="auto"> was the only one that increased, with a monthly advance of 0.2 points.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">The </span><strong><span dir="auto">country&#8217;s future economic situation</span></strong><span dir="auto"> was the component with the largest decline, falling 0.8 points month-over-month. This was followed by the component that assesses the </span><strong><span dir="auto">current ability of household members to purchase durable goods</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , which fell 0.6 points compared to September 2025.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">The </span><strong><span dir="auto">country&#8217;s economic situation today, compared to 12 months ago</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , fell by 0.3 units, and the </span><strong><span dir="auto">expected economic situation of household members within 12 months, compared to the current one</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , decreased by 0.1 monthly points.</span></p>

<p><span dir="auto">This increase reflected the  </span><strong><span dir="auto">positive trend in household spending </span></strong> <strong><span dir="auto">on goods and services</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , despite changes in U.S. tariff policy. It also marked the third monthly increase in this indicator this year.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In the reference month, the IMCP remained at 111.5 points. Meanwhile, in its annual comparison, private consumption increased 1.1% in the sixth month of 2025.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">According to seasonally adjusted monthly figures, consumption of </span><strong><span dir="auto">domestic goods and</span></strong><span dir="auto"> services remained unchanged. Goods increased by 0.3%, while services decreased by 0.1%. Regarding </span><strong><span dir="auto">imported goods</span></strong><span dir="auto"> , consumption increased by 4.9% in June of this year compared to the previous month.</span></p>
<p><span dir="auto">In its annual measurement, spending on domestic goods and services grew 0.5 percent, while spending on imported goods increased 4.4 percent.</span></p>

<p><strong><span>According to the </span><a href="https://www.inegi.org.mx/"><span>National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI)</span></a><span> , the Monthly Indicator of Private Consumption (IMCP)</span></strong><span> registered a </span><strong><span>1%</span></strong><span> decline  in May 2025 compared to last April, while in annual terms it fell by  </span><strong><span>0.9 percent</span></strong><span> .</span></p>

<p><span>Inflation is one of the factors that affects consumption, since when it increases, the prices of products, services, and goods increase, resulting in a decrease in purchases.</span></p>

<p><span>Private consumption, one of the driving forces of the Mexican economy, showed positive performance in April 2025, after having fallen 0.2% last March, despite the country&#8217;s economic slowdown.</span></p>
<p><span>According to the  </span><a href="https://www.inegi.org.mx/"><span>National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI)</span></a><span> , the </span><strong><span> Monthly Private Consumption Indicator (IMCP)</span></strong><span>  registered an increase of </span><strong><span>1.1%</span></strong><span> compared to the previous month, while, in annual terms, it had an increase of </span><strong><span>0.7 percent</span></strong><span> .</span></p>
<p><span>This increase reflected the  </span><strong><span>positive evolution of household spending </span></strong> <strong><span>on goods and services </span></strong><strong><span>of national origin</span></strong><span> .</span></p>
<p><span>According to seasonally adjusted monthly figures, consumption of domestic goods and services grew </span><strong><span>1.5%</span></strong><span> ; goods reported a </span><strong><span> 2%</span></strong><span> increase  , and services grew  </span><strong><span>0.7%</span></strong><span> .</span></p>
<p><span>Regarding imported goods, consumption decreased by  </span><strong><span>1%</span></strong><span>  in April of this year compared to the previous month.</span></p>
<p><span>On an annual basis, spending on domestic goods and services grew 3.1 percent, while spending on imported goods decreased 8.3 percent.</span></p>

<p><span>According to estimates by the financial institution </span><a href="https://www.banamex.com/"><span>Banamex</span></a><span> , general inflation could close the year at 4%, which would complicate the acquisition of goods and services, affecting consumption for the remainder of the year.</span></p>

<p><span>By component, </span><strong><span>consumption of domestic goods and services</span></strong><span> decreased 0.5% in March compared to February of this year, with a consistent decrease in goods and services. In contrast, consumption of imported goods showed a slight increase of 0.4%.</span></p>
<p><span>Compared to the same period in 2024, spending on domestic goods and services fell 0.4%, with a 1.0% decline in goods and a 0.5% increase in services. Meanwhile, consumption of imported goods fell significantly by 6.1%.</span></p>

<p><span>During the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25), </span><strong><span>several economic indicators in Mexico showed declines</span></strong><span> or barely significant increases. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by just 0.2%, while secondary activities, such as industry and manufacturing, registered a 1.3% annual decline.</span></p>
<p><span>Meanwhile, the Timely Indicator of Economic Activity (IOAE) estimated a 0.16% decline in March, marking the second consecutive month of contraction. In the manufacturing sector, production fell 0.34% year-on-year in March.</span></p>
