GUADALAJARA, JAL.– The transportation sector is responsible for 13.7% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally, with a growth rate of 1.9% annually , according to data from the Mexican Transportation Institute (IMT) .

In this context, Cummins presented at Expo Transporte ANPACT 2025 the path it has followed to become a key player in the decarbonization of the transportation industry, where solutions for diesel, natural gas and hydrogen engines converge; as well as the integration of an efficient powertrain .

Jorge Machuca, Cummins’ Latin American Engine Segment Leader, noted that since 2010, Cummins has improved the fuel efficiency of diesel engines by 25%, which translates into lower GHG emissions.

In 2022, Cummins launched its Destination Zero initiative , which aims to reduce GHG emissions through various stages, and from which initiatives such as the X15 Euro VI engines and Cummins HELM (High Efficiency, Lower Emissions and Multiple Fuels) emerge.

Among Cummins’ HELM solutions, the X15N natural gas engine stands out , which can run on compressed natural gas and also renewable energy, offering various profitability options, noted Lucía López, commercial director of Cummins Mexico, highlighting that this engine is already available in Mexico.

On this decarbonization path, the X15H also stands out, “the next step towards decarbonization, which will be almost zero emissions and has no carbon,” commented Lucía López. This engine represents the capabilities that Cummins can achieve, although it is not yet available in Mexico.

Regarding natural gas engines, Jorge Machuca emphasized that it is not a generalized solution for all carriers and the context in which it will operate and what competitive advantages it may have must be reviewed .

Regarding efficiency, Federico García, commercial director of the Cummins Meritor Business, noted that the alliance between Meritor and Cummins is celebrating its third anniversary , and the goal is to continue adding to the integration of the powertrain to achieve greater efficiencies.

A prime example is the RT4616HE rear axle, a robust and durable component with a proven track record of reliability, MLMS technology, sustainability, and efficiency. “Today, seven out of ten vehicles have a Meritor axle, and this new product offers up to 1.5% greater efficiency and uses 5.1 liters less oil,” García added.
