Hutchison Ports ICAVE , operator of the specialized container terminal at the port of Veracruz, received a new Super-Post-Panamax dock crane this weekend that will allow it to operate two mega-ships simultaneously and increase its flexibility to serve smaller vessels, with an investment of 226 million pesos (mdp).

The equipment, unloaded this Sunday, May 18, is designed to be operated remotely from a control room (ROS) and incorporates state-of-the-art technology that allows for a boom reach of 68 meters, sufficient to work with vessels up to 24 container rows wide.

The load capacity of this new equipment reaches 65 tons with a spreader and up to 81 tons with a hook, allowing it to perform special maneuvers with high efficiency. Thanks to its fully electric operating system—with a consumption of 13.2 kilovolts and a power factor between 0.9 and 1.0— this crane contributes to significantly reducing the company’s carbon footprint .

Susana Díaz Virgen, general manager of Hutchison Ports ICAVE, noted that “with this acquisition, ICAVE adds four cranes with similar characteristics , strengthening its ship-to-ship operations and consolidating its position as one of the most modern and sustainable terminals in the Gulf of Mexico.”

He added that the new crane is expected to begin operations in mid-August 2025, once its technical assessment ( commissioning ) process is completed. This will modernize the infrastructure, strengthen operational capacity , and improve customer service.

This investment is part of Hutchison Ports’ global NET Zero sustainability strategy , which aims to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 54.6% by 2033 and achieve net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.

In addition to this addition, which brings the total number of cranes at the Veracruz terminal to eight , Hutchison Ports ICAVE plans to expand its fleet of equipment during 2025 and 2026 with the arrival of an empty container crane, three heavy-duty Reach Stackers, five RTG cranes and six additional autonomous tractors, all using 100% electric technology.

These investments are part of the comprehensive modernization and sustainability plan that Hutchison Ports is promoting globally, with a view to increasing the efficiency of its terminals and contributing to the decarbonization of the logistics sector.
