The alliance between ANA Holdings (ANA HD) and Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA) will provide a range of new routes for cargo movement, among which Mexico could benefit from a new connection from the latter airline.

Christian Platteau, CEO of Hermes Aviation , said that, specifically for Mexico, the sectors that would benefit are the automotive, high-tech , and other industries.

“Hopefully, we’ll soon be able to fly to Mexico (NCA). A flight could significantly support us in cargo movements, not only to Japan but to Asia in general. With the two companies together, they’ll be a very important player in Asia,” he said in an interview with T21.

He revealed that there have always been plans to have a flight by NCA , who have even visited various Mexican airports to learn about the potential.

In that sense, he stressed that if this new route exists, it would have to have a stop, for example, in Los Angeles or Anchorage on the way to Japan .

He specified that ANA currently lands in Mexican territory with its Dreamliner 787-8, that is, for passenger transport.

Platteau believes this combination will open up a portfolio of new destinations for cargo, not just passenger traffic.

“For NCA, it’s a positive development because we’ll have many additional destinations to sell; we have a very broad portfolio,” he emphasized.

Regarding the impact on cargo movement due to the United States tariff policy, he explained that there was an impact on the flow towards our northern neighbor, however, it was offset by an increase towards Asia and Europe .

“There was a dip in February, but things quickly normalized afterward, and the last three months were better than last year. This could benefit Mexico in the long run,” he noted.

For the end of 2025, he said, without giving details, that “it will be better than expected, and there are several projects we’re working on, we’re putting together several things, but overall, it will be good months. There are several projects with other airlines.”

Hermes Aviation expects strong growth in air cargo movement between Mexico and Europe, along with Asia, by the end of 2024, transporting mainly perishable and automotive products. For 2025, the outlook continues to be one of growth, although it will closely follow Donald Trump’s arrival to the presidency of the United States.

Christian Platteau, CEO of the firm, tells T21 that this year they will seek to expand their presence in the land sector and improve the services of the airlines represented. “Our plan is to maintain the market shares gained and exceed customer service expectations,” he says.

For this reason, he affirms that its growth will continue, although “everything depends on the negative or positive effect of the northern neighbor, especially operations to Asia could increase significantly.”

“(The Trump effect) will have a significant impact on Mexico, it will be politically important not to fall into his populist traps and to react prudently to any challenge posed,” he anticipates.

It is worth mentioning that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) points out that, although 2024 is shaping up to be an exceptional year for air cargo, 2025 should be viewed with some caution, due to Donald Trump’s announcement of tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico , which could affect global supply chains.
