As part of a one billion dollar (USD) investment, General Motors (GM) will manufacture the Aveo and Groove models at its Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila complex, which will be destined for the domestic market, announced Francisco Garza, president and CEO of the automaker in the country.

“We will start in 2027 with Chevrolet Groove and later add our beloved Chevrolet Aveo, currently the best-selling vehicle in the Mexican market,” the executive highlighted.

During the event “General Motors of Mexico’s New Project for Mexico,” held in Toluca, State of Mexico, Garza highlighted that this new project is part of the one billion dollar investment announced last January for the operations of the US-based firm in the country and is aligned with the Mexico Plan .

“It is a project conceived in Mexico for Mexico, which strengthens the national industry, takes advantage of the installed capacity in our country and contributes to reducing dependence on foreign countries, promoting sustainable industrial development in line with the objectives of the Mexico Plan,” he emphasized.

The executive indicated that starting next year they will begin local assembly of units for the national market, with the goal of reaching an approximate capacity of 80,000 vehicles per year by 2030 .

This announcement comes in a context where Mexico imposed, since January 1, 2026, tariffs of up to 50% on 1,463 tariff classifications for countries with which it does not have a trade agreement, including China, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Thailand, Malaysia and others, in order to protect the country’s industrial sectors such as textiles and clothing, automotive and steel.

In his remarks, Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Economy (SE) , said that 80,000 vehicles that are being imported from Asia to Mexico, which do not have Mexican parts, nor are they assembled here, will begin to be produced in the country.

“Those 80,000 vehicles represent a very big impact for General Motors to preserve, maintain and grow its manufacturing platform in our country, protect jobs, the plants they have, and it will mean a cost, an investment, because it was cheaper to do it elsewhere, but what must be acknowledged about General Motors is the decision made by its director, its global CEO, Mary Barra, to invest one billion dollars for now, plus whatever comes later,” he said.

Similarly, Ebrard indicated that these vehicles will be manufactured with more parts and components made in Mexico.

For his part, Francisco Garza pointed out that the Ramos Arizpe complex comprises five plants and employs more than 5,000 people, making it a benchmark for the country’s industrial transformation. He noted that with the projected 80,000 units, “we will be exceeding our vision of increasing vehicle production for the domestic market by 10% by 2030.”

With this project, GM is setting a precedent in the automotive industry at a time when the policy of Donald Trump, President of the United States, seeks the return of these companies to the United States.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , GM manufactured 291,031 light vehicles in Mexican plants during the period January-April 2026 , which meant a growth of 2.9% compared to the same cycle of 2025.

In the same period, the brand exported 263,159 units , a growth of 0.1% compared to the first four months of last year.

Geotab continues to promote telematics solutions in Mexico with a focus on safety, cost reduction, and resource optimization for its customers.  

In an interview with T21, José Liborio Calderón, Geotab’s country manager , detailed his main initiatives and strategic alliances that improve efficiency and sustainability in fleet management. 

Geotab developed a technology platform that provides real-time visibilityinto fleet status, improving road safety and protecting company assets.  

Through its telematics solutions, the company offers tools that identify risky driving habits, such as harsh braking or distracted driving, and issue alerts to prevent incidents. 

“The platform not only helps reduce costs through preventative maintenance, but also allows us to monitor driver behavior and ensure that vehicles remain operational for as long as possible,” Calderón explained. 

A success story in innovation and sustainability 

Grupo Bimbo was recognized at the Geotab Innovation Awards for its focus on sustainability and operational efficiency. The company implemented telematics solutions for its fleet management in Mexico and other countries in the region, including Honduras, El Salvador, and Chile. 

“Bimbo has a clear goal for 2030: to achieve 50% electric or low-emission fleets. With our platform, they can manage routes, maintenance, and productivity, helping them advance their transformation strategy toward more sustainable mobility,” Calderón emphasized. 

Geotab’s achievements also include its integration with General Motors (GM) for light vehicles in Mexico, which will allow companies to access telematics solutions without the need for additional devices.  

This integration will facilitate the collection of data directly from vehicles, optimizing their performance and reducing operating costs. 

GM-integrated telematics offers key benefits, such as faster installation because the units come pre-equipped with telematics devices from the factory. This allows access to real-time data without the need to install additional hardware. Additionally, compatibility with the manufacturer is guaranteed, avoiding warranty issues and ensuring that the information obtained is accurate and directly extracted from the vehicle’s system. 

Four years leading the world in telematics 

For the fourth consecutive year , Geotab has been recognized by ABI Research as the number one telematics provider worldwide . Among the factors that have helped it maintain this leadership position are its focus on innovation, its big data analytics capabilities , and the development of solutions tailored to diverse industries.

The company also ventured into new areas, such as sponsoring pilot Majo Rodríguez, reflecting its commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility.

El cargo GEOTAB STRENGTHENS SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN FLEET MANAGEMENT IN MEXICO apareció primero en T21.

Sales of light vehicles in Mexico reached 127,684 units last August, which represents an increase of 11.9% compared to the same month of the previous year and, in turn, is placed as the best month of sales in the year and the best August since 2016 , according to data from the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVL) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

Inegi also reported that during the first eight months of the year, vehicle sales reached almost one million units, with 962,870, a figure that represents an increase of 12.2% compared to what was reported during the same period in 2023.

Given these results, the CEO of the Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA) , Guillermo Rosales, said that “with these figures, the light vehicle market in August was higher than AMDA estimated, which stood at 120,459 units. The estimate had a percentage difference of -5.7%.”

In this same context, the report of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) and the AMDA revealed that the most prominent brands in the year-to-date are Nissan , with 17.1% of the market, followed by General Motors with 14.0% and Volkswagen with 11.7 percent.

Likewise, some brands such as Mazda and Toyota showed significant increases in their annual sales, with growth of more than 30% in both cases.

In addition, the report highlighted the performance of Chinese brands , which continue to gain ground in the Mexican market . An example is MG Motor , which managed to maintain its share with a slight increase in sales, registering more than five thousand units sold in August 2024, which represents an increase of 0.5% compared to the same month of the previous year.

On the other hand, the Chinese brand Chirey also experienced a significant drop in sales. In August 2024, this brand reported a decrease of 41.4% compared to August last year, selling just over two thousand units.

Thus, so far this year, Chirey has sold 18,813 units , a decrease of 28.1% compared to the same period in 2023. This drop could be linked to strong competition from other brands and changes in the preference of the Mexican consumer.

Despite these challenges, Chinese brands remain important players in the light vehicle market in Mexico, driven by phenomena such as nearshoring . Their ability to adapt to new market conditions and the growing demand for affordable vehicles  allows them to maintain a competitive position.

As nearshoring continues to consolidate itself as a trend, these new brands will continue to expand their presence and participation in the country.

El cargo Full Speed Ahead! Light Vehicle Sales Hit Their Best August Since 2016 apareció primero en T21.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicated that during May of this year, sales of new cars in the domestic market grew by 12.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching around 119,985 units.

The information comes from 23 companies affiliated with the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry, A.C. (AMIA), Autos Orientales Picacho, Giant Motors Latin America, and Great Wall Motor Mexico.

Meanwhile, from January to May of this year, 585,721 units were sold, representing an increase of 12.7% compared to the same period in 2023.

In this regard, AMIA and the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) released the total sales report of new light vehicles by brand. The top 5 were: Nissan, General Motors, Volkswagen, Toyota, and Kia.

Guillermo Rosales Zárate, executive president of AMDA, highlighted that in terms of performance against the immediate previous month (April 2024), there is an increase in the sales of new light vehicles, by 6,734 units, which represents a progress of 5.9%.

Rosales Zárate indicated that with these figures, the light vehicle market in May exceeded what AMDA estimated, which stood at 111,997 units. The estimate had a percentage difference of -6.7% compared to the observed data of 119,985 units.

Additionally, the AMDA representative commented that the level of commercialization in May is higher than the sales of the same month in 2019, a pre-pandemic year, standing at 17.1% above the 102,422 units sold then. From January to May 2024, the market is positioned above 2019 sales levels by 9.7%.

Regarding the national consumer price index, it recorded an annual advance of 4.78%, and the corresponding index for car purchases had an annual increase of 1.59%, with data as of the first half of May 2024.
