As part of a one billion dollar (USD) investment, General Motors (GM) will manufacture the Aveo and Groove models at its Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila complex, which will be destined for the domestic market, announced Francisco Garza, president and CEO of the automaker in the country.

“We will start in 2027 with Chevrolet Groove and later add our beloved Chevrolet Aveo, currently the best-selling vehicle in the Mexican market,” the executive highlighted.

During the event “General Motors of Mexico’s New Project for Mexico,” held in Toluca, State of Mexico, Garza highlighted that this new project is part of the one billion dollar investment announced last January for the operations of the US-based firm in the country and is aligned with the Mexico Plan .

“It is a project conceived in Mexico for Mexico, which strengthens the national industry, takes advantage of the installed capacity in our country and contributes to reducing dependence on foreign countries, promoting sustainable industrial development in line with the objectives of the Mexico Plan,” he emphasized.

The executive indicated that starting next year they will begin local assembly of units for the national market, with the goal of reaching an approximate capacity of 80,000 vehicles per year by 2030 .

This announcement comes in a context where Mexico imposed, since January 1, 2026, tariffs of up to 50% on 1,463 tariff classifications for countries with which it does not have a trade agreement, including China, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Thailand, Malaysia and others, in order to protect the country’s industrial sectors such as textiles and clothing, automotive and steel.

In his remarks, Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Economy (SE) , said that 80,000 vehicles that are being imported from Asia to Mexico, which do not have Mexican parts, nor are they assembled here, will begin to be produced in the country.

“Those 80,000 vehicles represent a very big impact for General Motors to preserve, maintain and grow its manufacturing platform in our country, protect jobs, the plants they have, and it will mean a cost, an investment, because it was cheaper to do it elsewhere, but what must be acknowledged about General Motors is the decision made by its director, its global CEO, Mary Barra, to invest one billion dollars for now, plus whatever comes later,” he said.

Similarly, Ebrard indicated that these vehicles will be manufactured with more parts and components made in Mexico.

For his part, Francisco Garza pointed out that the Ramos Arizpe complex comprises five plants and employs more than 5,000 people, making it a benchmark for the country’s industrial transformation. He noted that with the projected 80,000 units, “we will be exceeding our vision of increasing vehicle production for the domestic market by 10% by 2030.”

With this project, GM is setting a precedent in the automotive industry at a time when the policy of Donald Trump, President of the United States, seeks the return of these companies to the United States.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , GM manufactured 291,031 light vehicles in Mexican plants during the period January-April 2026 , which meant a growth of 2.9% compared to the same cycle of 2025.

In the same period, the brand exported 263,159 units , a growth of 0.1% compared to the first four months of last year.

The first fruits of this collaboration will include four models for Central and South America: a compact SUV, a compact sedan, and two pickups, in addition to an electric commercial van designed for the North American market, with launches scheduled to begin in 2028.

Geotab developed a technology platform that provides real-time visibilityinto fleet status, improving road safety and protecting company assets.

“The platform not only helps reduce costs through preventative maintenance, but also allows us to monitor driver behavior and ensure that vehicles remain operational for as long as possible,” Calderón explained.

A success story in innovation and sustainability

Grupo Bimbo was recognized at the Geotab Innovation Awards for its focus on sustainability and operational efficiency. The company implemented telematics solutions for its fleet management in Mexico and other countries in the region, including Honduras, El Salvador, and Chile.

“Bimbo has a clear goal for 2030: to achieve 50% electric or low-emission fleets.
Geotab’s achievements also include its integration with General Motors (GM) for light vehicles in Mexico, which will allow companies to access telematics solutions without the need for additional devices.

GM-integrated telematics offers key benefits, such as faster installation because the units come pre-equipped with telematics devices from the factory. This allows access to real-time data without the need to install additional hardware. Additionally, compatibility with the manufacturer is guaranteed, avoiding warranty issues and ensuring that the information obtained is accurate and directly extracted from the vehicle’s system.

For the fourth consecutive year , Geotab has been recognized by ABI Research as the number one telematics provider worldwide . Among the factors that have helped it maintain this leadership position are its focus on innovation, its big data analytics capabilities , and the development of solutions tailored to diverse industries.

“We are a family business. A company that has dedicated the last 25 years to generating a very robust value proposition in telematics.
Additionally, Geotab’s 2024 Sustainability Report highlighted how the company supports its customers in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to greener fleets. Tools such as energy efficiency analysis and smart route management have been key in this process.

In addition, the company launched the Fill the Fleet promotion , designed to facilitate the adoption of telematics solutions by new fleets.

“For all current customers, Fill The Fleet is a promotion valid until June 30th. It consists of the free adoption of the cameras, for which you will only pay the monthly subscription price,” explained Calderón.

The company also ventured into new areas, such as sponsoring pilot Majo Rodríguez, reflecting its commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility.

In recent years, Geotab has experienced sustained growth in the country , with significant expansion in its customer base and connected vehicle subscriptions.

The company expects this trend to continue in the coming years, driven by digitalization and the growing demand for telematics solutions in the sector.

Geotab remains committed to innovation and development in Mexico , focusing on providing tools that improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of business operations. As a strategic market, the country represents a key opportunity to strengthen technological solutions that drive growth and competitiveness.

Finally, Calderón emphasized that in the company, each member is part of a high-performance team, where perseverance and discipline are essential for success.

He compared their training routine to soccer, pointing out that receiving the ball is just the beginning, and that what’s truly important is how they play.
He also emphasized that his commitment extends not only internally but also to customers and distributors, whom he considers an essential part of the team. Ultimately, he explained, “true success lies in moving forward together.”

The growing geopolitical tension between China and the United States is leading many companies to reconfigure their supply chains , opting for nearshoring in Mexico as a key strategy to ensure the continuity and efficiency of their production, Ernesto Chacón, general manager of T21, told T21. Fictiv Mexico .

Mexico’s manufacturing capacity , along with its proximity to the United States , places it as a key destination for attracting investments and industrial projects. In this context, Fictiv , a company with more than 10 years in the development of prototypes and manufacturing of mechanical products, decided to expand its presence in Mexico as part of its strategy to strengthen its global manufacturing network.

“The need for growth is aligned with a Mexico that has a lot of knowledge and many bases to operate as we do in other parts of the world,” said Ernesto Chacón.

Ernesto Chacón, general manager of Fictiv México.

In that sense, the company established a “center of operational excellence” in Monterrey , Nuevo León, and expanded its presence in Tijuana, focusing on key processes such as machining, plastic injection and metal working.

These centers will take advantage of the industrial clusters that exist in Mexico , with the aim of managing the supply chain for global clients such as Tesla , Apple and General Motors .

According to Chacón, the company’s digital platform allows its clients to obtain quotes for mechanical parts in less than 10 minutes , which considerably speeds up development times.

“Our competitive advantage lies in the speed and precision of our supply chain, and that is something our customers value greatly,” Chacón commented.

For the general manager of Fictiv, the growing demand for nearshoring by global corporations forces companies to offer fast and efficient solutions in an increasingly competitive manufacturing environment.

“Mexico is prepared to be a main player in this new era of global manufacturing,” said Chacón.

He indicated that speed has become a determining factor for nearshoring in Mexico . Reducing manufacturing times is key for many companies seeking to optimize their operations.

“Instead of the 16 to 22 weeks that mold manufacturing can take in other markets, in Mexico this process can be reduced to only eight to 12 weeks in our company,” said Chacón.

This represents a significant advantage for companies seeking to improve their response times in an increasingly demanding global environment.

It is important to mention that Grupo T21 will organize the Transportation and Logistics Meeting (ETYL) on October 9 and 10 in Monterrey, Nuevo León. The event will focus on the topic Maximizing logistics opportunities with nearshoring and will feature the participation of prominent leaders of this industrial trend in Mexico.
