Vehicle leasing is no longer just a financial tool, but an operational one. In an environment where liquidity and efficiency are more important than asset ownership, this model has gained ground as a strategy for companies, including freight carriers, according to TIP Mexico .

The scheme is not limited to light vehicles. TIP Mexico offers solutions for tractor-trailers, trailers and semi-trailers, as well as cars, vans and buses , thus expanding its reach within the business mobility sector.

Given this scenario, the company offers a guide to understand how vehicle leasing works and, above all, what to expect, and what not to expect, when contracting this type of service.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to understanding its scope:

It operates on a different logic: you don’t buy, you operate.
Leasing works under an operating expense (OpEx) scheme, which allows you to preserve capital, improve cash flow and maintain financial flexibility, explained TIP Mexico.

In practice, this means that the carrier pays for the use of the asset, not for its ownership.

What a leasing company does

The value of a leasing company is not limited to financing. According to TIP Mexico, its role can directly impact operations:

Optimizes resources: allows for more predictable financial planning.

It facilitates fleet renewal: especially towards cleaner technologies.

Manage the fleet: centralize procedures, maintenance, and telemetry.

It offers flexible schemes: adapted to the client’s operation.

At this point, support can be as important as unity itself.

What it doesn’t do (and is often confused with)

One of the most common mistakes is assuming that the leasing company controls the operation. This is not the case, TIP Mexico warned.

It does not manage routes or last mile: the strategy remains in the hands of the carrier.

It does not control the operators: operational performance is the responsibility of the client.

It does not assume legal responsibility for the use: regulatory compliance falls on the user.

It does not automatically absorb all costs: expenses such as ownership, maintenance or insurance depend on the user.

This is where the success or failure of the model is defined: in the clarity of responsibilities.

The key lies in shared responsibility.

Leasing does not replace the carrier’s management, it complements it.

While the leasing company guarantees the availability of the asset and operational support, the company must ensure its proper use and safekeeping, TIP Mexico indicated.

A model that is gaining ground

The sector’s growth supports this change. The fleet of leased vehicles grew 24.4% in the last annual cycle, reflecting a shift towards asset-based leasing models, according to data cited by TIP Mexico.

More than a financial solution, leasing is emerging as an operational tool. But its effectiveness depends not only on the leasing company, but also on how clearly the carrier understands where the service ends… and where their responsibility begins.

The availability of spare parts and efficient after-sales service are factors that directly impact fleet productivity. Based on this principle, Isuzu structures its strategy in Mexico around an ecosystem of technical support, maintenance, and warranties designed to sustain the daily operations of its customers.

The automaker operates through a nationwide network of authorized dealerships and service centers that provide maintenance, specialized technical assistance, and operator training, with the goal of reducing downtime. As part of this system, it implements the One Price program, which standardizes labor costs across the country for vehicles operating in different regions.

In terms of supply, the company reports an average annual fill rate of 96.75% for genuine parts available through its national network. The portfolio includes Isuzu Genuine Parts and Best Value Parts (BVP) , options designed to maintain the performance and lifespan of the vehicles, taking into account operational efficiency, costs, and safety.

The support also includes a warranty plan tailored to the vehicles’ operating conditions. ELF models offer 36 months or 100,000 kilometers of coverage, while Forward models offer 24 months with unlimited mileage, extendable for an additional two years under certain restrictions.

“At Isuzu, we understand that the true value of a vehicle is built through its daily operation. That’s why our after-sales service is an integral part of our relationship with our customers and the support we offer throughout the lifespan of each vehicle,” stated Constantino Vázquez Álvarez, Dealer Development Manager

With this approach, Isuzu underlines the relevance of after-sales service as a strategic component for the operational continuity of fleets and operators in Mexico.

In the freight transport sector, financial pressure isn’t always reflected in fewer trips or idled vehicles, but rather in the difficulty of maintaining liquidity .
In this context, TIP Mexico is promoting the Sale & Leaseback scheme , a financial model that allows transportation companies to convert their assets into immediate liquidity without interrupting their operations. Under this scheme, companies sell their vehicles to TIP Mexico and immediately lease them back to continue using them in their daily activities, the firm announced in a press release.

This operation allows companies to receive immediate access to fresh capital, avoid increasing their debt levels, and maintain service continuity. Since it is not a bank loan, the scheme helps improve indicators such as liquidity and leverage without jeopardizing operations .

The model includes flexible contracts, either operating or finance leases , and integrates tax-deductible services such as maintenance, insurance, and satellite tracking. In this way, rent and services become deductible expenses, adding a tax component to the financial strategy.

TIP Mexico’s Sale & Leaseback scheme is complemented by services such as maintenance management, vehicle insurance, satellite tracking, legal assistance and the use of the MyTIP fleet management platform, integrating financial liquidity with operational efficiency.

In an environment where 56.2% of Mexican companies resort to alternative financing schemes, TIP Mexico positions itself as an ally for transportation and logistics, backed by its own infrastructure, national coverage and more than 30 years of experience in the sector.

Electromobility: the path towards lower emissions operations

The study highlighted that tools such as telematics, predictive maintenance, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can reduce maintenance costs by up to 15% and increase vehicle availability by 10% to 15%. However, adoption remains uneven due to a lack of data access and complex administrative processes. Edenred emphasized that fleets must have complete control over their information to optimize operational decisions.

Sustainability: from compliance to positive impact

The document emphasized that companies can become key players in sustainable transport, given the number of kilometers they travel and their role in purchasing new vehicles. The approach focuses on measuring and reducing emissions using the GHG Protocol methodology, promoting offsetting projects, and encouraging efficient driving.

Edenred concluded that the combination of technology, clean energy and data culture will define the competitiveness of fleets in the coming years , in an environment where efficiency and sustainability will be increasingly crucial.

In Mexico, where approximately 57 million vehicles circulate and transportation represents more than 18% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) , road safety has become a critical challenge for operational continuity and the protection of lives.

This warning came from Juan Manuel Villafañe , director of Carstore Mexico , a company with 25 years dedicated to developing technology to reduce accidents in commercial fleets.

Carstore was founded in the early 2000s as a company focused on vehicle “accessorization” for automotive dealerships. However, around 2004, its focus shifted towards the design of specialized electronic security solutions .

Its first major client was PepsiCo Foods , followed in 2007 by Safety Mexico , with whom the company made the leap into road safety for large-scale fleets.

Since then, they have worked with insurers and major transport companies such as Lala , Bimbo and Coca-Cola , accelerating the development of technologies focused on reducing accidents.

“The main objective is one: to save lives ,” Villafañe stated in an interview with T21.

According to Villafañe, the growth of the national vehicle fleet, urbanization, and a lack of road safety education have triggered a worrying increase in highway accidents . “More than 90% of drivers exceed the speed limits on federal highways by 30 to 40 kilometers per hour (km/h). The consequences are much more severe accidents,” he emphasized.

The problem, he explained, is not just a road issue: an incident affects the infrastructure, the supply capacity and, therefore, the country’s economy.

Added to this is the lack of maintenance on units and roads, as well as the lack of real training for operators.

“Spain has a similar fleet to Mexico’s, but radically lower accident rates. That shows that change is possible,” he added.

Technology, yes, but applied strategically.

Villafañe identified three pillars to improve fleet safety: active and passive technology; interpretation and training; and constant monitoring of equipment .

The most common mistake in Mexico, he explained, is implementing technology “just because it’s trendy,” without a root cause analysis. This leads to poor adoption, operator resistance, and even device tampering.

“There is no technology in the world that cannot be manipulated. If you install 100 devices and 80 are disconnected due to lack of supervision, it’s as if you have nothing,” he asserted.

When technology is implemented strategically, he stressed, fleets can reduce their incidents by 80% to 90% .

However, the barrier remains human: operators who feel watched, supervisors who do not follow up, companies that install technology without accompanying it with training and culture.

In freight transport, road safety cannot be reduced to numbers: it represents the difference between prevention and tragedy, between profitability and operational risk, explained Alfredo Alcántara, Road Safety Manager of CESVI Mexico .

Behind every kilometer traveled, there are decisions that determine the well-being of the operators and the financial stability of the companies, he explained.

From this perspective, CESVI seeks to be a strategic ally in road safety management for fleets, offering comprehensive plans of analysis, training and advice that allow for a reduction in accident rates between 25 % and 50 percent .

“We have made companies more profitable. If a policy costs one million pesos and the claims rate remains the same, there is no profit. But when we reduce those rates, fleets save millions that they can reinvest in prevention and operations,” Alcántara explained.

The human factor, the starting point

The expert pointed out that human error remains the primary cause of accidents. Speeding, distractions from cell phone use, and lack of rest are the most common causes.

“An operator with high blood pressure or with 15 hours of driving experience represents a risk; he must be stopped before he goes out on the road,” he warned.

Therefore, he recommended implementing routine medical assessments – even if they are basic, such as blood pressure or glucose – and physical-mechanical review protocols before each trip.

“If you detect bald tires or brake failures, that vehicle should not be driven. Prevention should be a policy, not a suggestion,” he added.

Telemetry, onboard cameras, and real-time monitoring systems have transformed how fleets detect and correct risky behaviors.

Today, companies can measure driving habits, rate operators, and record key data in accidents .

“It’s no longer just a matter of sending the operator and hoping they return safely. Now we know if they exceeded the speed limit, ran a red light, or made a sudden maneuver,” Alcántara explained.

He also commented that Mexico has 61 million vehicles and nine million motorcycles , an environment where different weights and speeds coexist.

“There are more and more accidents between heavy vehicles and motorcycles. The operator must learn to anticipate them, to live with that risk,” he said.

CESVI promotes training of at least 16 hours per year , designed according to the real problems of the fleets.

“A one-hour course doesn’t change behavior. A two-day training course has an impact for up to 90 days, but it must be reinforced with constant campaigns and repetitions,” he stated.

Alcántara exemplified that the economic impact of prevention can indeed be measured . Between 2023 and 2024 , one of the companies advised by CESVI managed to reduce its annual insurance premium from 21 million to 15 million pesos , savings derived from security strategies and continuous training.

This margin, he explained, allows fleets to redirect resources towards maintenance, operator rest, or operational improvements, generating a virtuous circle between prevention and efficiency.
