In Mexico, truck drivers indicated that stress while driving is primarily caused by the behavior of other road users. Fifty-five percent identified motorcycles, bicycles, and scooters driven at high speeds and irresponsibly as one of the most frequent risks , followed by 54% who mentioned cell phone use by other drivers .

These external factors, common in areas such as Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara, increase the mental load on the operator and amplify stress during operation.

The study also showed that road safety is influenced by the environment. 55% reported that traffic or roadworks make it difficult to complete routes , while 67% felt that unsafe areas with a risk of theft affect their ability to operate safely .

Given this scenario, the report identified a regional willingness to adopt security-oriented technology solutions: 88% are willing to incorporate tools that improve performance and reduce risks , highlighting video telematics, ADAS systems, data analytics, and asset monitoring within integrated platforms.

In Mexico, where approximately 57 million vehicles circulate and transportation represents more than 18% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) , road safety has become a critical challenge for operational continuity and the protection of lives.

This warning came from Juan Manuel Villafañe , director of Carstore Mexico , a company with 25 years dedicated to developing technology to reduce accidents in commercial fleets.

Carstore was founded in the early 2000s as a company focused on vehicle “accessorization” for automotive dealerships. However, around 2004, its focus shifted towards the design of specialized electronic security solutions .

Its first major client was PepsiCo Foods , followed in 2007 by Safety Mexico , with whom the company made the leap into road safety for large-scale fleets.

Since then, they have worked with insurers and major transport companies such as Lala , Bimbo and Coca-Cola , accelerating the development of technologies focused on reducing accidents.

“The main objective is one: to save lives ,” Villafañe stated in an interview with T21.

According to Villafañe, the growth of the national vehicle fleet, urbanization, and a lack of road safety education have triggered a worrying increase in highway accidents . “More than 90% of drivers exceed the speed limits on federal highways by 30 to 40 kilometers per hour (km/h). The consequences are much more severe accidents,” he emphasized.

The problem, he explained, is not just a road issue: an incident affects the infrastructure, the supply capacity and, therefore, the country’s economy.

Added to this is the lack of maintenance on units and roads, as well as the lack of real training for operators.

“Spain has a similar fleet to Mexico’s, but radically lower accident rates. That shows that change is possible,” he added.

Technology, yes, but applied strategically.

Villafañe identified three pillars to improve fleet safety: active and passive technology; interpretation and training; and constant monitoring of equipment .

The most common mistake in Mexico, he explained, is implementing technology “just because it’s trendy,” without a root cause analysis. This leads to poor adoption, operator resistance, and even device tampering.

“There is no technology in the world that cannot be manipulated. If you install 100 devices and 80 are disconnected due to lack of supervision, it’s as if you have nothing,” he asserted.

When technology is implemented strategically, he stressed, fleets can reduce their incidents by 80% to 90% .

However, the barrier remains human: operators who feel watched, supervisors who do not follow up, companies that install technology without accompanying it with training and culture.

In freight transport, road safety cannot be reduced to numbers: it represents the difference between prevention and tragedy, between profitability and operational risk, explained Alfredo Alcántara, Road Safety Manager of CESVI Mexico .

Behind every kilometer traveled, there are decisions that determine the well-being of the operators and the financial stability of the companies, he explained.

From this perspective, CESVI seeks to be a strategic ally in road safety management for fleets, offering comprehensive plans of analysis, training and advice that allow for a reduction in accident rates between 25 % and 50 percent .

“We have made companies more profitable. If a policy costs one million pesos and the claims rate remains the same, there is no profit. But when we reduce those rates, fleets save millions that they can reinvest in prevention and operations,” Alcántara explained.

The human factor, the starting point

The expert pointed out that human error remains the primary cause of accidents. Speeding, distractions from cell phone use, and lack of rest are the most common causes.

“An operator with high blood pressure or with 15 hours of driving experience represents a risk; he must be stopped before he goes out on the road,” he warned.

Therefore, he recommended implementing routine medical assessments – even if they are basic, such as blood pressure or glucose – and physical-mechanical review protocols before each trip.

“If you detect bald tires or brake failures, that vehicle should not be driven. Prevention should be a policy, not a suggestion,” he added.

Telemetry, onboard cameras, and real-time monitoring systems have transformed how fleets detect and correct risky behaviors.

Today, companies can measure driving habits, rate operators, and record key data in accidents .

“It’s no longer just a matter of sending the operator and hoping they return safely. Now we know if they exceeded the speed limit, ran a red light, or made a sudden maneuver,” Alcántara explained.

He also commented that Mexico has 61 million vehicles and nine million motorcycles , an environment where different weights and speeds coexist.

“There are more and more accidents between heavy vehicles and motorcycles. The operator must learn to anticipate them, to live with that risk,” he said.

CESVI promotes training of at least 16 hours per year , designed according to the real problems of the fleets.

“A one-hour course doesn’t change behavior. A two-day training course has an impact for up to 90 days, but it must be reinforced with constant campaigns and repetitions,” he stated.

Alcántara exemplified that the economic impact of prevention can indeed be measured . Between 2023 and 2024 , one of the companies advised by CESVI managed to reduce its annual insurance premium from 21 million to 15 million pesos , savings derived from security strategies and continuous training.

This margin, he explained, allows fleets to redirect resources towards maintenance, operator rest, or operational improvements, generating a virtuous circle between prevention and efficiency.
