Aviation in Latin America and the Caribbean requires more action and support to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 , as there are currently several obstacles such as economic and development disparities, limited infrastructure and variable regulatory capacities.

The above was part of the conclusions of the study “Net Zero Aviation in Latin America and the Caribbean: Pathways and Trade-offs” , carried out by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) , with the technical support of ICF as a specialized consultant, which analyzed several alternatives to move towards this goal.

“There is a firm commitment from the industry to achieve Net Zero, but also a recognition that Latin America and the Caribbean face different structural conditions. Therefore, it is essential to rigorously analyze the region’s opportunities and challenges to define a roadmap that is realistic and sustainable over time, bearing in mind that aviation is not a luxury, but an engine of economic development,” stated Peter Cerdá, CEO of ALTA.

As part of the study, existing zero-emission policies and targets were reviewed , and country-by-country data was collected. Technical visits were also conducted to gather the most comprehensive and reliable data. Additionally, meetings were held with all stakeholders: national governments, civil aviation authorities, aircraft manufacturers, suppliers, and other interested parties . This information was used to develop reliable projections and scenarios for 2050.

The analysis highlighted that fleet renewal is one of the most effective measures , enabling significant improvements in fuel efficiency, operating costs, and environmental performance. The study indicated that several airlines in Latin America and the Caribbean have made significant progress in this area, with 38% of their capacity currently operated by new-generation aircraft, surpassing Europe and the United States (34%), and with investments already reaching US$40 billion, representing 1,100 new aircraft.

He explained that operational efficiencies are the most immediate and cost-effective measure, with potential savings of up to 11% in emissions . This includes route optimization, reduced ground time, and the use of digital technologies; however, the success of this pillar depends on coordinated action among governments, airports, and air navigation service providers.

Similarly, he specified that sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) represent the most powerful long-term tool , although their implementation faces significant barriers.

“SAF is between three and 12 times more expensive than conventional fuel, and its widespread adoption without government incentives could increase costs per seat by $43 and reduce air traffic by 30 percent. The region has the potential to be a major player in the global SAF industry thanks to its local raw materials, although scaling up its production will require supportive policies, infrastructure, and mechanisms to minimize the cost impact on passengers,” the analysis stated.

Another finding of the study was the potential of Latin America and the Caribbean in the carbon credit market, thanks to the diversity of its natural ecosystems, many of which are crucial for global environmental well-being. Between 2020 and 2024, the region issued 23% of global carbon credits, despite contributing only 6.7% of emissions. However, further work is needed to ensure that these nature-based solutions meet the international standards required by the aviation industry. “This is a complementary way to address emissions that cannot be directly reduced.”

The analysis also highlighted that the region’s aviation sector has already made concrete progress in fleet modernization ; that operational efficiency, supported by coordinated decisions and articulated regulatory frameworks, is positioned as one of the most immediate and cost-effective tools for reducing emissions, without ignoring the potential of other alternatives that require more time and specific conditions for their implementation.

“The priority is to lay the foundations for a progressive, inclusive and sustainable transition for regional aviation , in a joint effort with all actors in the aviation ecosystem,” he said.

He explained that operational efficiencies are an essential and immediate opportunity; improvements in aircraft, airports, ground operations and optimization of the flight profile alone offer a significant opportunity to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in the region, with potential savings of 3.3% to 11.3% by 2050 .

“Airlines in the Latin America and Caribbean region have already made significant progress in reducing their emissions through improvements in operational efficiency. However, achieving even greater efficiencies depends on greater government and stakeholder engagement, investment by airports and air navigation service providers, and coordinated action across the entire aviation ecosystem,” he concluded.

Road safety , modernization of the vehicle fleet , and logistical preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are emerging as some of the issues that will shape the agenda for passenger and tourism transport in Mexico in the short and long term.

That was the prevailing tone during the inauguration of Expo Foro Movilidad 2026 , the most important meeting of the sector in Latin America, organized by the National Chamber of Passenger and Tourism Transportation (Canapat) , where authorities and representatives of the industry agreed that passenger transport is facing a moment of technological, regulatory and operational transformation.

The business sector emphasized that mobility is not just about moving people, but is a central component of the country’s competitiveness. In this context, it was highlighted that passenger road transport contributes approximately 2% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and accounts for nearly 94% of passenger transport in the country , underscoring its importance to the national economy.

Under this scenario, industrialists pointed out that efficient mobility is essential for the functioning of production chains and the attraction of investments, by facilitating the movement of workers and the connection between urban centers, tourist destinations and industrial zones.

During his participation, Alejandro Malagón Barragán, president of the Confederation of Industrial Chambers (Concamin) , highlighted that passenger transport is a key component for the economic development and territorial integration of the country.

Mobility, he stated, not only transports people, but also talent, productivity and opportunities, by allowing workers, tourists and communities to connect with economic activities and services.

However, along with its economic importance, the sector also faces structural challenges , including road safety, the presence of irregular transport, and the need to accelerate fleet renewal towards more efficient and sustainable technologies.

The sector itself acknowledged that modernizing the vehicle fleet is a priority to improve competitiveness, reduce polluting emissions, and raise safety standards in service.

In that regard, Luis Antonio Zaldívar Sánchez, president of Canapat, pointed out that the industry is working on modernizing units, professionalizing the sector, and improving regulations, with the goal of strengthening transportation operations in the country.

One of the factors that could accelerate these changes is the 2026 World Cup , an event for which Mexico is preparing as an international showcase in terms of mobility.

The passenger transport sector will play a central role in the logistics of the tournament , connecting airports, terminals, hotels, stadiums and tourist destinations for millions of domestic and foreign visitors.

In addition to that challenge, federal authorities highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional coordination to improve road safety, digitize procedures, and modernize transportation-related infrastructure.

Emphasis was also placed on the role of technology, intelligent fleet management, and the transition to cleaner vehicles as elements that will shape the future of passenger transport in the country.

With more than 650 affiliated companies and around 50,000 vehicles in operation , passenger and tourism transport maintains a central role in national connectivity and tourism activity.

In this context, Expo Foro Movilidad 2026 seeks to be a space to discuss technological innovation, sustainability, safety and new mobility models that will mark the evolution of the sector in the coming years.

GUADALAJARA, JAL.- Nacional Financiera (Nafin) is preparing a scrappage bond focused on light, medium and last mile freight transport , which could be implemented in the first quarter of 2026, as well as concessional financing, announced Siddharta Flores, deputy director of Projects Financed by International Financial Organizations at Nafin.

In the panel “Financing for Sustainable Mobility ,” held within the framework of Expo Transporte ANPACT 2025 , Flores indicated that this project is to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the sector, although he did not elaborate on the details.

In this regard, Alejandro Osorio, president of the ANPACT Expo Transport Committee , considered it relevant that resources can be available for the scrapping bonus and that this type of initiative “reaches the grassroots level, the base of the pyramid.”

“What we are looking for is for the carriers who are present here at Expo Transporte ANPACT, who need to renew this fleet, because used vehicles, and especially used imported vehicles that come from the United States, are vehicles that at their age are already scrap metal, they are vehicles that are closely related to emissions and also to the accident rate, and for that, this scrapping bonus could be useful,” Osorio emphasized.

In his presentation, Augusto Trigos, Head of Sales for Volkswagen Trucks and Buses and MAN Trucks and Buses , pointed out that better financial education is needed so that truckers can learn about the benefits offered by the product they are looking for and what type of financing best suits their needs.

The specialist considered that there is still some resistance among business owners in the sector, especially regarding adapting to the modernization of financing, such as the digital signing of contracts, which in some cases those involved still prefer to do in person.

Isabel Studer, president of the Global Sustainability organization , emphasized that it is important to consider the modernization of fleets , since in Mexico the average age is 19 years in the cargo and passenger sectors, and there are even vehicles that reach up to 40 years.

He explained that almost half of the federal fleet is obsolete, and “although some 843,000 units are registered, we know that the real fleet, because it includes all those other vehicles in the states that do not have those federal fleets, reaches 1.6 million vehicles; therefore, more than 800,000 units with state plates do not even have registrations,” which makes it difficult for them to access financing.

He pointed out that the above has an impact on the environment, since, he said, 20% of the country’s total emissions come from the transport sector, largely due to the aging of the vehicle fleet.
