Fleet management in Mexico is moving beyond schemes focused solely on fuel control to advance towards models that integrate maintenance information, tolls, telemetry and electrification, with the goal of improving operational efficiency and reducing costs.

Faced with greater logistical demands and increasing pressure to optimize resources, companies are demanding more and more tools that allow them to have a comprehensive view of their operations, said Pablo Chiappetta, general director of Mobility at  Edenred Mexico .

“Today, the real need of customers is to have all the information integrated in one place,” he stated.

The executive explained that fuel represents between 30% and 35% of the total cost of a fleet, but there are other factors that directly impact profitability, such as maintenance, tolls, or the time that the units remain out of operation.

For companies, one of the main challenges is to transform the data generated by different systems into useful information for decision-making.

The trend, Chiappetta noted, is to move from isolated platforms to ecosystems capable of combining fuel , telemetry, maintenance and vehicle performance information to generate predictive analysis and operational recommendations.

“Companies are looking to simplify and have a single view of the operation. It’s no longer just about knowing how much is spent on fuel, but about understanding the total cost of operation,” he said.

In this context, Edenred is working on a platform called One Mobility , which is scheduled to launch at the end of this year, with the intention of integrating information from different solutions and generating indicators for fleet managers.

The strategy is the result of an evolution that began three years ago with the launch of new solutions such as Ticket Car Plus, its fuel control platform; tools for self-consumption; maintenance management; toll solutions and emissions compensation programs.

Now, the challenge is to connect all that information through a data and analytics layer capable of generating recommendations and predictive models supported by artificial intelligence (AI).

Electrification is starting to gain ground

The transition to electric vehicles is also starting to gain relevance, particularly in last-mile operations .

According to Chiappetta, some large companies already operate partially electrified fleets and demand for this type of solution is growing at triple-digit rates, although the available infrastructure is still limited.

Currently there are around four thousand chargers in Mexico, a number still small for the size of the country, so many companies have started with loading schemes in their own yards.

“Electrification is an irreversible trend. The challenge now is to develop the necessary infrastructure to support that growth ,” he commented.

Digitization also opens up opportunities to reduce costs and improve operational control.

According to the executive, the use of technological tools allows for reducing leaks and detecting savings opportunities, as well as anticipating maintenance and optimizing the performance of the units.

“Companies that do not evolve and incorporate technology will be less efficient in an increasingly demanding market,” he warned.

Mexico will be the first country where Edenred will deploy One Mobility.

“We are very proud that Mexico is the first market where we will launch this product. We believe that what we are developing here will transcend the country’s borders,” he commented.

The Mexican operation is one of the most important for the company. Globally, mobility represents 30% of Edenred’s business, and Mexico is the second most important market in the world for this division, after Brazil.

Currently, Edenred Mobility Mexico serves more than 12,000 customers and manages over half a million fuel payment methods. The company has expanded its offerings to include maintenance, toll collection, self-consumption, and electromobility solutions , with a strategy focused on integrating information to provide a more comprehensive view of operations.

Logistics operations in Mexico face increasing pressures that force companies to rethink the management of their fleets, in an environment where costs, insecurity and operational efficiency have become determining factors, explained Luis Larrea, senior regional manager of Field Engineering at Samsara Mexico.

At The Logistics World Summit & Expo , Larrea explained that eight out of every ten products consumed in the country are transported through the logistics sector , while 72% of the national economy depends on foreign trade , highlighting the importance of trucking to economic activity. However, this dynamism coexists with rising costs: fuel prices have increased by 16.7% , while insurance premiums have risen between 15% and 20%.

Adding to this context is the issue of insecurity. Between January and October 2025, 5,200 robberies were recorded on Mexican highways , according to data from Samsara, with estimated losses of between 7 and 10 billion pesos annually.

Given this scenario, technological adoption is becoming increasingly important. Currently, 48% of fleets already use artificial intelligence (AI) , although its implementation requires clear objectives and a defined strategy to generate value in operations.

One of the main challenges remains fuel, which can represent between 30% and 50% of operating costs . In this respect, even marginal reductions can translate into significant impacts on profitability.

Operational visibility is positioned as a key element. Tools such as telematics, process digitization, in-cab cameras with alerts , operator training programs, and monitoring systems allow for improved operational control, optimized routes, and more efficient cost management, Larrea explained.

In particular, measuring idling speed and fuel consumption becomes critical . Identifying unnecessary expenses, analyzing driving habits, and differentiating between productive and unproductive idling allows for performance improvements, cost reductions, and real-time operational visibility.

Concrete examples reflect these benefits. Companies like Potosinos have reported a 23% increase in delivery time productivity , as well as a 20% reduction in fuel leaks and a 7% reduction in operator turnover .

In terms of fleet utilization , monitoring key performance indicators—such as productive hours, unit usage, maintenance, and route management—allows for progress toward more efficient operations. This translates into reduced operating costs, fewer units out of service, and improved asset management.

In this process, AI is positioned as a cross-cutting enabler that impacts various areas of the operation. From operators, with vehicle inspections, document interpretation, and in-cab monitoring, to maintenance and administrative teams, where this technology facilitates route management, report generation, invoicing, and order tracking.

The benefits are also reflected in financial and safety indicators. One example is PROAN , which achieved an 80% reduction in freight collection time and a 64% decrease in speeding violations , in an operation with more than 450 vehicles and over 70 years of experience .

Larrea emphasized that the combination of technology, data, and discipline in measuring indicators is emerging as the path to strengthening efficiency, reducing costs, and improving the competitiveness of the trucking industry in Mexico .

“This approach allowed us to increase sales volume, reduce cancellations and consolidate the profitability of the business, positioning the company as one of the strongest and most profitable in the group,” the Swedish company highlighted.

Rodrigo Clemente is a production engineer, has a postgraduate degree in marketing and training in leadership, strategic management, financial market and development of high-performance teams.

Scania expands administrative facilities

As part of strengthening the brand’s operations in the country, Scania Mexico also announced the expansion of its administrative facilities, in order to consolidate teams and processes for closer, more agile and specialized attention to the transport sector.

Fleet management in Mexico is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the growth of transportation and logistics , the acceleration of e-commerce, and the need to operate with greater efficiency, visibility, and safety.

In this context, technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and comprehensive digitalization , has become a key enabler for managing increasingly large and complex fleets.

According to Ernesto Cruz, Technology Director at Boxtires , the breaking point for many companies occurred after the COVID-19 pandemic, when the volume of vehicles and logistical demand exceeded the capabilities of a traditional administration.

“If you don’t implement technology, there comes a point when the size of the fleet exceeds any manual control. A vehicle is an asset with a life cycle that must be fully registered, documented, and monitored so that it truly fulfills the function for which it was acquired,” he explained in an interview.

Among the technologies used are advanced database and search engines , similar to those used by companies like Google or Amazon, as well as new query schemes based on artificial intelligence, in the style of generative platforms.

The benefit for customers translates into timely and real-time tracking of all procedures and services received by each vehicle, as well as the generation of a complete electronic file, which safeguards the entire history of the asset throughout its useful life.

“This is useful for both the client and our administrative, management and control desk areas,” he added.

One of the main challenges for technology adoption in fleet management is information security. Cruz acknowledged that handling sensitive data for large companies makes this sector a constant target for attacks.

“Cybersecurity is a huge challenge, not only for Boxtires, but for any company that handles third-party information. There are too many avenues of attack and too many actors involved,” he stated.

In this context, AI plays a central role. From filtering emails, documents, and messages, to verifying IP addresses and validating files entering or leaving the platform, AI makes it possible to detect risk patterns, malicious microcode, and anomalous behavior before they pose a threat.

According to Boxtires, the industry is evolving towards models based on operational efficiency, flexible acquisition schemes and comprehensive digitalization supported by telemetry, big data and artificial intelligence.

Ernesto Cruz predicted that fleet management will become increasingly linked to physical and digital security . With vehicles becoming more connected, equipped with GPS, cameras, and remote control systems, the challenge will be managing large volumes of data without compromising the integrity of operations.

“Transmitting and storing data to protect the operator and the vehicle is one of the great challenges of the future. Today we can already stop a vehicle, start it, or analyze entire routes; the challenge is to do it safely and efficiently,” he emphasized.

Edenred emphasized that fleets must have complete control over their information to optimize operational decisions.

Sustainability: from compliance to positive impact

The document emphasized that companies can become key players in sustainable transport, given the number of kilometers they travel and their role in purchasing new vehicles. The approach focuses on measuring and reducing emissions using the GHG Protocol methodology, promoting offsetting projects, and encouraging efficient driving.

Edenred concluded that the combination of technology, clean energy and data culture will define the competitiveness of fleets in the coming years , in an environment where efficiency and sustainability will be increasingly crucial.

In the corporate fleet management category , the winners of the Fleet LatAm Awards 2025 , presented by Global Fleet , were:

During the panel  The New OEM Ecosystem , participants agreed that the emergence of Chinese brands does not represent a threat, but rather an opportunity to boost the electric vehicle market.

Norma Ortiz, head of Administrative Services at  Bayer ; Carlos Moreno Giles, deputy director of Fleet Solutions at  Nissan ; and Eder Rodríguez, Fleet Director Mexico at Stellantis ,  highlighted that this competition drives innovation  and that many automakers have already established strategic alliances with Chinese manufacturers. They also noted that soon there won’t be a single vehicle in Mexico without Chinese components.

In the panel  “Fleet Dynamics in Four Key Markets: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Central America ,” Ricardo de Bolle, Director of Global Business Development at  Arval BNP Paribas Group ; Alberto Vélez, CEO of  AutoCorp ; Mirella Juárez, CEO and Founder of  Smart Mobility ; and Mauricio Serna, CEO of  Renting Colombia ,  addressed the region’s challenges in the transition to electromobility and other topics.

Among the main obstacles, they mentioned the lack of tax incentives and adequate infrastructure. They also indicated that the arrival of manufacturers like BYD in Latin America has contributed to expanding the supply of electric vehicles in these countries .

The panel  entitled “Mexico Fleet Management Outlook 2026”  emphasized that Chinese manufacturers are transforming the automotive landscape in Latin America.

Meanwhile, in the panels  AI and Technology for a Safe, Productive, and Profitable Fleet and Transforming Fleet Management: Real-Time Visibility, Proactive Maintenance, and Efficiency at Scale , experts agreed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a key tool for improving fleet safety, efficiency, and profitability.

Looking to the future, the event made it clear that electrification, technology, and international collaboration are the pillars that will transform fleet management in the region.

CANCÚN, Q. ROO.- Artificial Intelligence (AI) only makes sense when it is used to solve real customer problems and not when it is applied automatically. This was the premise with which Andrés Arias, Senior Manager Customer Solutions at Amazon Web Services (AWS) , explained that the company’s strategy is built “from back to front”, placing the customer at the center and not the technology .

This vision shaped various mechanisms that allow for rapid experimentation, correction, and progress. During his participation in the 4th DCT Conference – Quálitas Infinite Possibilities , Arias explained that many decisions are considered reversible, known within the company as “two-way doors.”

Under this model, 100% information isn’t required to act; a reasonable level of certainty is sufficient to allow for cost-effective testing and adjustments.

In practice, this approach empowers teams to move with agility, which is essential in an environment like transportation, where fleet management requires immediate response to risks and operational changes .

Organizational culture was also a central focus of his presentation. Arias noted that at Amazon, small, autonomous teams, known as two pizza teams , are formed, which concentrate the ability to decide, execute, and measure results.

This scheme avoids bureaucracy and encourages speed of response , factors that are critical to transferring innovation into daily operations.

Regarding the relationship between innovation and failure, he acknowledged that invention cannot be separated from mistakes and cited the example of the Fire Phone, a failed project that generated millions in losses for the company in recent years, but whose lessons learned were leveraged in subsequent developments.

Beyond culture and processes, Arias explained that technological architecture also plays a decisive role. Amazon has transitioned over time toward a microservices model , which allows for the creation of fast, scalable, and low-cost solutions.

This structure makes it easier for teams to work in parallel, developing services that can connect to each other through interfaces, without relying on complex integrations.

For the transportation sector , this type of architecture opens the door to AI solutions that adapt to the needs of each fleet and can be turned on or off based on demand, reducing failure costs and accelerating adoption.

Artificial intelligence, viewed from this perspective, ceases to be an abstract promise and becomes a practical tool for simplifying processes , improving decision-making, and strengthening carriers’ responsiveness.
