Once graduated, he took the reins of the commercial area of ​​the company dedicated to the manufacture and repair of trailers and semi-trailers for cargo transportation , but his interests have also extended to many other areas of the company. Although Gallegos Trailers has a good work team, for Adrián it is important to be fully involved in the business.

For him, one of the company’s greatest leaps throughout its history has been doubling its production capacity, going from two manufacturing plants that manufactured around 150 units per month, to four plants that today allow Gallegos Trailers meet the needs of transporters .

“Currently in our plant number three we manufacture dry boxes and platforms, in addition, we started the year with a new line for manufacturing refrigerated boxes that joined the Gallegos Trailers product portfolio. In turn, the fourth plant, which was opened a few months ago, is dedicated to the manufacturing of aluminum products, which will strengthen our production capacity, along with plant two, which is also dedicated to this product,” he explained in an interview. Gallegos.

Currently the company has the installed capacity to manufacture 350 trailers per month, however, with the entry into operations of the fourth plant this will increase to 500 per month in the short term.

“ The plan by the end of the year is to reach 700 units that will be distributed in Mexico, the United States, Central and South America . It should be noted that in 2023 we will open a distribution center in Laredo, Texas, with the aim of providing confidence to our American customers,” Gallegos reported.

The Canadian markets are joined by the aforementioned markets; to date Gallegos Trailers already has permits to send equipment, since they already comply with all the documentation. “We have realized that this market has a lot of potential, that is why we have adhered to the required regulations and we have even decided to standardize these for the American market because the Canadian market is much more demanding,” he said.

The heavy vehicle production industry in Mexico is configured to serve the export market, with exposure in North America, mainly to the United States, where 96.4% of foreign sales are destined. Under this premise, any slowdown in the demand for these capital goods has an effect on the production and export of heavy units.

This is what happened in the production and export figures of heavy vehicles manufactured in Mexico, where according to the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Heavy Vehicles (RAIAVP), the production of cargo and passenger units totaled 12,141 during May, this represented a contraction of 35.1% compared to the figures reached in 2023.

Of the total production of heavy vehicles, 11,465 corresponded to cargo vehicles, a figure that represented a reduction of 36.4% compared to May of last year.

In the accumulated of the first five months of the year, the manufacturing of cargo vehicles registered 76,764 units, a reduction of 15.8% compared to 2023, which represents 14,404 fewer.

Production of heavy vehicles: 

Regarding the export of heavy vehicles last May, it was 9,932 units, this meant a contraction of 33.1% compared to what was sent in the same month last year, when 14,845 units were placed abroad. Of the total exports, 9,927 corresponded to cargo vehicles, the figure observed a decrease of 33.1% compared to what was sent in May of last year.

In the accumulated January-May of this year, exports contracted 15.7%, going from 75,264 vehicles in 2023 to 63,404 in 2024. Of the total exports in the referred period, 63,385 corresponded to cargo units, this meant a reduction in exports of 15.8% vs. the first five months of 2023.

Alejandro Osorio, director of Public Affairs and Communication of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) , explained in a press conference that the export of vehicles manufactured in Mexico is decreasing due to the moderation in demand from trading partners, mainly from the United States .

It should be noted that in the fifth month of the year, 9,854 units were sent to the northern neighbor, this represented a reduction of 30.3% compared to 2023. In turn, Canada imported 49 units, which meant a contraction of 89.5% compared to 2023. to the 468 that were sent during 2023. Colombia experienced a similar case when it went from 76 requests in the fifth month of 2023 to 12 in the same month of the current year, meaning that the country admitted 84.2% fewer units.

Osorio detailed that both the sales and production results of heavy vehicles produced in Mexico were also impacted by the recent disruption in the supply chain, particularly vision systems (mirrors) for heavy vehicles.

“This is because the main factory producing mirrors for the industry established in Escobedo, Nuevo León, caught fire last April, completely interrupting its operations, which has stopped the production of this auto part that is essential for vehicles to produced can be delivered and registered. This fact is affecting the continued delivery of vehicle orders because it is an essential auto part for road safety,” stated the ANPACT director.

The manufacturing figures for heavy vehicles detailed that during April 2024, 14,950 units (both cargo and passenger) were produced, representing a decrease of 14.8% compared to the same month in 2023. Likewise, it marked a reduction of 12.2% compared to the same month in 2019. These data were shared by the National Association of Bus, Truck, and Tractor Manufacturers (ANPACT).

Specifically, cargo vehicles experienced a contraction of 15.9%, decreasing from 17,075 units in April 2023 to 14,367 in April of the current year.

Regarding the production of heavy vehicles by energy source, Virginia Olalde, Director of Foreign Trade and Economic Studies at ANPACT, detailed that in the first four months of the year, 97.4% more units powered by natural gas were manufactured, reaching a total of 535 units produced.

“In terms of electric vehicles, 41 units were produced from January to April, representing a decrease of 31.7% compared to the same period of the previous year,” stated the foreign trade specialist.

In turn, during the first four months of the current year, the production of heavy vehicles (cargo and passenger) manufactured in Mexico has experienced a decline of 9.9% compared to the same period in 2023. Olalde detailed that the cargo segment has experienced a manufacturing drop of 10.7% during the mentioned period, meaning that 65,299 trucks were manufactured during the cited period.

Regarding exports, in April, 11,391 units of cargo and passenger vehicles were shipped, representing a contraction of 21.1% compared to the same month in 2023. Out of the cited figure, a total of 11,379 were from the cargo segment, which presented a reduction of 21.2% compared to last year.

In the cumulative period from January to April of the current year, 53,472 units (cargo and passenger) were exported, which represented a setback of 11.5% compared to the similar period of the previous year.

Regarding shipments of cargo vehicles in the first four months of the year, a total of 53,458 units were recorded, a performance that positioned the period 11.5% below 2023.

The representative of ANPACT detailed that exports to our main destination, which is the United States, decreased by 11.5% from January to April of this year. In contrast, shipments to Canada increased by 5.4% to a total of 1,491 units. In third place, Colombia stood with a growth of 40.0%, increasing from 230 to 322 units exported in the mentioned period.

April 2024 breaks the streak of negative figures in the production and export of light vehicles in a similar month, as it recorded growth for the first time since 2005.

In the reference month, plants located in Mexico manufactured 358,575 units, which corresponded to a 21.7% increase compared to the same month last year.

“This April is the strongest since 2005 when the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL) began in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI),” detailed Adriana Ramírez, Manager of Economic Studies at the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) in a press conference.

At the same time, in the cumulative period from January to April of the current year, a total of 1,286,356 units were produced, representing an increase of 5.7% compared to the same period in 2023.

Ramírez indicated that production by segment behaved positively in the first four months of the year. SUVs represented 46.9% of total production with 603,628 units, followed by pickups with 363,843 units, which accounted for 28.3% of national manufacturing, followed by compact cars with 18.8%, a percentage equivalent to 242,368 units.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth places were occupied by subcompact cars with 41,901 units, luxury cars with 33,076, and minivans with 1,540 units, respectively.

It is worth noting that since October 2023, Mexico has been producing two models of electric vehicles. In this context, in the cumulative period from January to April 2024, 25,701 units have been manufactured.

The representative of AMIA reported that the plant capacity utilized in the country was 89.2% during the first two months of the year. “This was higher than pre-pandemic and post-pandemic levels, highlighting an improvement in the assembly plants in our country.”

Regarding exports, April 2024 was the strongest month since 2005, with 289,756 units sent to trading partners, representing a 14.4% increase compared to April 2023.

In the cumulative period of the first four months of the year, export growth was 12.1% compared to the same period in 2023, with a total of 1,115,455 units.

By segment, SUVs led the shipments to Mexico’s trading partners with a total of 542,865 units, corresponding to 48.7 percent. In second place were pickup trucks with 328,001 units, representing 29.4% of exports.

In third place, compact cars were parked with 205,938 vehicles, accounting for 18.5 percent. In fourth and fifth place were luxury vehicles with 30,916 units and subcompacts with 7,735, respectively.

During the first four months of the year, the main destinations for vehicles made in Mexico were: the United States with 901,914 vehicles, which accounted for 80.9% of exports. Canada ranked second with 81,909 units, and Germany took third place with 33,540 vehicles.
