The vehicle age of the federal motor carrier is one of the major challenges faced by all stakeholders in this industry, especially in a context like that of nearshoring, where more efficient and productive logistics are required.

Based on data from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT), in January 2024, the average age of the federal motor carrier fleet stood at 20.4 years. For reference, in December 2018, the age was 16.6 years.

In an analysis by T21 Business Intelligence of the Basic Statistics of Federal Motor Carrier Transportation, covering the period from 1960 to 2024, it identifies the model year where the highest number of units is concentrated.

It is noteworthy that 73% of the fleet is over 10 years old, while 42% of it is over 20 years old. In this analysis, trucks have a higher exposure in the fleet with over 10 years, at 78.8%, while tractor-trailers are at 69 percent.

In the Basic Statistics of Federal Motor Transport, it is identified that there are 671,002 motor units, consisting of 232,674 single trucks and 436,610 tractor-trailers.

One notable element is that in both the truck, tractor-trailer, and total fleet categories, the year 2008 is the model year with the highest participation. In July 2008, the emissions standard for engines NOM-044 was changed, introducing the EPA 04 / EURO IV standard, which led to a pre-purchase phenomenon of units in the first half of that year, as recorded in the statistics.

Regarding the total fleet, 2008 remains the model year with the highest concentration of the fleet, followed by 2007 and 2009, as shown in the following graph. The top 10 years with the highest concentration contribute 33% of the registered vehicle fleet.

Considering both the single truck and tractor-trailer fleets, the highest number of units is in the 2008 model year with 28,495. The top 10 model years by volume contribute 29% of the existing fleet, with the noteworthy observation that 2024, with 3,087 units, does not appear in those top positions.
