In a port terminal, sustainability is no longer an issue that occurs on the sidelines of operations. The electrification of equipment, the reduction of emissions, staff training, and the way decisions are made are becoming part of a more efficient operation while reducing environmental impact.

Under that logic, Hutchison Ports LCT , Hutchison Ports LCMT and Hutchison Ports ICAVE moved from Level 2, called “Initiator”, to Level 3, “Innovator”, the highest category of the Sustainability Baseline Assessment 2025 , in the annual evaluation developed by the Hutchison Ports Group Sustainability Committee from Hong Kong to assess the degree of maturity in sustainability of its business units worldwide .

In a statement, Hutchison Ports explained that the scheme includes five categories: Governance, Environment, People, Business and Recognition , with the aim of measuring the degree of implementation of sustainable practices and the progress made during the last year.

Reaching the “Innovator” level means that sustainability begins to be incorporated into the daily management of terminals and not just into specific environmental projects.

Among the practices considered for progress, the participation of the Sustainability Committees of each terminal in the planning and monitoring of sustainability and decarbonization initiatives stands out .

“In addition, there are formal training and development systems for each position, annual monitoring of employees, leadership skills training focused on succession planning, as well as the establishment of goals and indicators to promote staff development,” the company explained.

The progress comes at a time when port operators face the need to increase capacity and productivity while moving towards lower-emission operations.

In the Mexican Pacific, Hutchison Ports LCT and Hutchison Ports LCMT, located in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, received their awards on August 5, 2026, and were presented to Manuel García Gordillo, general manager of both business units, as a result of the progress achieved during the last evaluated period.

Hutchison Ports ICAVE in Veracruz received its Level 3, “Innovator” certification on August 25th. The award was accepted by Javier Rodríguez, General Manager of Hutchison Ports ICAVE. The terminal advanced from Level 2 after strengthening, among other aspects, the participation of its Sustainability Committee in managing sustainability and decarbonization initiatives, as well as its formal processes for employee training, monitoring, and development.

The outcome of the three terminals is aligned with Hutchison Ports’ sustainability pillars: Our People, Our Environment and Our Business , under a model that incorporates governance practices across the board.

By achieving the highest level established by the Sustainability Baseline Assessment, Hutchison Ports LCT, Hutchison Ports LCMT and Hutchison Ports ICAVE strengthen their performance within the group’s global sustainability model , which contributes to the monitoring and reporting of environmental, social and governance practices, aspects that have acquired increasing relevance for business groups listed on stock markets and their various stakeholders.

With this, the three terminals reach the highest level of the company’s evaluation scheme at a time when the port industry is seeking to handle greater trade flows and move towards more efficient operations with fewer emissions.

It is worth remembering that in May of this year, Hutchison Ports ICAVE announced an investment of more than 62.8 million pesos to electrify and automate part of its internal operations at the port of Veracruz , as part of its logistics modernization and emissions reduction strategy.

According to statistics from the General Directorate of Ports (DGP) , an office belonging to the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM) of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) , the port of Veracruz moved 802,184 TEUs (20-foot containers) in the period January-August 2026, which meant a drop of 5.6% compared to the same cycle of 2025.

Meanwhile, in the first eight months of the year, the port of Lázaro Cárdenas handled 1,805,022 TEUs , a 4.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
