Fleet management in Mexico is moving beyond schemes focused solely on fuel control to advance towards models that integrate maintenance information, tolls, telemetry and electrification, with the goal of improving operational efficiency and reducing costs.

Faced with greater logistical demands and increasing pressure to optimize resources, companies are demanding more and more tools that allow them to have a comprehensive view of their operations, said Pablo Chiappetta, general director of Mobility at Edenred Mexico .

“Today, the real need of customers is to have all the information integrated in one place,” he stated.

The executive explained that fuel represents between 30% and 35% of the total cost of a fleet, but there are other factors that directly impact profitability, such as maintenance, tolls, or the time that the units remain out of operation.

For companies, one of the main challenges is to transform the data generated by different systems into useful information for decision-making.

The trend, Chiappetta noted, is to move from isolated platforms to ecosystems capable of combining fuel , telemetry, maintenance and vehicle performance information to generate predictive analysis and operational recommendations.

“Companies are looking to simplify and have a single view of the operation. It’s no longer just about knowing how much is spent on fuel, but about understanding the total cost of operation,” he said.

In this context, Edenred is working on a platform called One Mobility , which is scheduled to launch at the end of this year, with the intention of integrating information from different solutions and generating indicators for fleet managers.

The strategy is the result of an evolution that began three years ago with the launch of new solutions such as Ticket Car Plus, its fuel control platform; tools for self-consumption; maintenance management; toll solutions and emissions compensation programs.

Now, the challenge is to connect all that information through a data and analytics layer capable of generating recommendations and predictive models supported by artificial intelligence (AI).

Electrification is starting to gain ground

The transition to electric vehicles is also starting to gain relevance, particularly in last-mile operations .

According to Chiappetta, some large companies already operate partially electrified fleets and demand for this type of solution is growing at triple-digit rates, although the available infrastructure is still limited.

Currently there are around four thousand chargers in Mexico, a number still small for the size of the country, so many companies have started with loading schemes in their own yards.

“Electrification is an irreversible trend. The challenge now is to develop the necessary infrastructure to support that growth ,” he commented.

Digitization also opens up opportunities to reduce costs and improve operational control.

According to the executive, the use of technological tools allows for reducing leaks and detecting savings opportunities, as well as anticipating maintenance and optimizing the performance of the units.

“Companies that do not evolve and incorporate technology will be less efficient in an increasingly demanding market,” he warned.

Mexico will be the first country where Edenred will deploy One Mobility.

“We are very proud that Mexico is the first market where we will launch this product. We believe that what we are developing here will transcend the country’s borders,” he commented.

The Mexican operation is one of the most important for the company. Globally, mobility represents 30% of Edenred’s business, and Mexico is the second most important market in the world for this division, after Brazil.

Currently, Edenred Mobility Mexico serves more than 12,000 customers and manages over half a million fuel payment methods. The company has expanded its offerings to include maintenance, toll collection, self-consumption, and electromobility solutions , with a strategy focused on integrating information to provide a more comprehensive view of operations.

JIUTEPEC, MOR.- The electrification of freight transport in Mexico is progressing, but not at the pace set by the global trend. The main obstacle is not the availability of units, but everything surrounding them: infrastructure, energy, and operation, stated Óscar Zubiría, commercial director of BYD Trucks Mexico .

During the 4th Meeting on Technology and Sustainable Mobility of the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP) , he said that the transition is not limited to replacing combustion trucks with electric ones , but involves building a complete ecosystem that allows them to function.

This includes everything from defining routes and range to charging schedules, the type of infrastructure available, and the energy capacity of each distribution center, Zubiría indicated.

Oscar Zubiria, commercial director of BYD Trucks Mexico.

One of the most sensitive issues is energy . In Mexico, not all centers have the necessary electrical capacity, which forces projects to be adapted to real conditions, such as operating with different voltage levels (220 or 440 volts), to avoid excessive investments in infrastructure.

Added to this is a structural challenge: energy generation and availability. Although the sector is beginning to open up again, companies still face the need to invest in their own solutions, such as solar panels and storage systems, to guarantee efficient supply at a lower cost.

In this sense, energy storage is a key component. The ability to capture energy, store it in batteries, and use it during charging allows for cost optimization and reduced dependence on the electrical grid.

Infrastructure and operation: the real barrier

The deployment of electric fleets also requires a detailed operational analysis. Factors such as daily mileage, downtime, and charging schedules determine the type of infrastructure needed, as well as the project’s viability, the specialist explained.

Even the use of smart chargers, which schedule charging at specific times, can make a difference in energy efficiency and operating costs.

In economic terms, the financial model remains a key decision point . Companies must evaluate options such as leasing, direct investment, or financing, in addition to considering factors like accelerated depreciation for these types of assets, the executive emphasized.

Costs and operational advantages

Despite the barriers, clear advantages are already being seen in segments such as last-mile delivery . In local operations, electric vehicles can reduce operating costs by up to 70% compared to combustion engine vehicles, provided they are used under appropriate infrastructure and operating conditions.

This explains why electrification is concentrated on urban routes, where current ranges — of around 350 to 400 kilometers — are sufficient to cover daily operations, Zubiría explained.

Another key challenge lies in operational adoption . The transition requires training not only operators, but also maintenance and administrative staff , to ensure the correct use of the technology and prevent failures that impact operations.

Lack of training can even affect the lifespan of critical components such as the battery, whose degradation depends largely on usage and charging practices, he indicated.

In this sense, the lifespan of the batteries —estimated at up to eight years— also opens the door to a second life in energy storage applications, which could improve the return on investment.

Under these conditions, the electrification of transportation in Mexico is shaping up to be a gradual process. Currently, its development is concentrated on the last mile, where operational conditions favor its implementation, Zubiría commented.

Rather than an immediate and widespread adoption, the sector faces a transition that will depend on its ability to integrate technology, energy, and infrastructure into a single operating model.

The trucking industry faces a critical shift in its maintenance services . Fleets are incorporating increasingly technological vehicles, but the network of workshops still shows shortcomings in diagnostics, training, and processes—a bottleneck that threatens the sector’s daily operations, according to experts.

The challenge is particularly relevant in an industry that drives the country’s economy, where every hour of downtime directly impacts costs, delivery times, and road safety. Adding to the pressure to reduce downtime are increased technical, regulatory, and efficiency demands , such as the implementation of GPS tracking systems, in an environment where many workshops still operate under traditional models , with poorly standardized processes and a high dependence on the individual mechanic’s experience.

Added to this scenario is the growing coexistence of combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, both in fleets and in the general vehicle fleet, each with different repair requirements and more complex systems.

Natalia Salcedo Franco, CEO and founder of Pitz , a company specializing in technological solutions for automotive workshops, warned that one of the main challenges is not only access to spare parts or equipment, but the lack of tools that allow for more accurate and faster diagnoses.

Salcedo asserted that in practice, a diagnosis can take up to two hours, and an error at this stage not only increases costs and repair times , but also increases operational and road safety risks.

Natalia Salcedo Franco, CEO and founder of Pitz.

The situation becomes even more critical with the arrival of electric vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Incorrect calibration, incomplete diagnosis, or a lack of technical knowledge can lead to malfunctions that manifest on the road, increasing accident rates and eroding consumer confidence in independent service, the specialist noted.

Technology as an enabler, not as a substitute

In this context, digitalization is emerging as a key enabler for the transformation of automotive services. Beyond simply selling isolated tools, the debate centers on how to integrate technology that helps workshops automate administrative tasks, accelerate diagnostics, and streamline workflows , without relying on expensive infrastructure or specialized hardware .

Salcedo explained that one of the biggest myths in the industry is the idea that the scanner solves the entire diagnostic problem. In reality, he indicated, the scanner works like a dictionary : it identifies error codes, but it doesn’t explain the origin of the problem on its own, nor the complete context of the fault. That’s where time is lost and the margin of error increases.

He emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) serves as a support tool that helps mechanics interpret information, understand causes, and prioritize repairs, without replacing human technical knowledge. This is particularly relevant in an industry where a single vehicle can have between 15,000 and 24,000 parts and thousands of possible combinations of failures, he explained.

Productivity, profitability and trust

Beyond diagnostics, another structural challenge for automotive service is productivity . Workshops that have repaired a limited number of vehicles per week for years often assume that this is their operational ceiling, when in reality the bottleneck lies in internal organization, parts management , and customer communication.

Profitability doesn’t necessarily increase by buying cheaper parts, but by getting vehicles back on the road faster , with accurate diagnostics, clear processes, and defined delivery times. In this sense, technology allows for the reduction of hundreds of hours of administrative work per month, freeing up staff time to focus on higher-value tasks.

There’s also a key component of transparency. In many cases, the relationship between repair shop and customer is strained by mistrust: the customer feels taken advantage of when they receive a long list of repairs. However, it’s not always about abuse, but rather a lack of clear information about what’s urgent, what can wait, and the risks of not addressing certain issues.

Standardizing diagnostics and better communicating the actual condition of the vehicle helps build long-term relationships , foster customer loyalty, and ensure business sustainability, especially in an environment where after-sales service is increasingly important.

A regional challenge with social impact

The debate goes beyond technology. Salcedo asserted that in Latin America, millions of families depend directly or indirectly on automotive services. Small and medium-sized workshops sustain entire local economies , but they operate in a fragmented market with slim margins and high levels of informality.

“This is a global industry valued at over a trillion dollars, where revenue is concentrated in the hands of a few players, while thousands of workshops operate with limited income. The adoption of technology, properly understood, is not about displacing labor, but about optimizing time, improving income, and raising the quality of life for those who depend on this activity,” he emphasized.

Looking ahead

In 2026, the automotive sector faces a dilemma: accelerate the professionalization of after-sales service or face a bottleneck that hinders the adoption of new vehicle technologies . Electrification will advance, but without a network of workshops that is prepared, trained, and supported by digital tools, the end user will bear the cost.

The challenge is not only technical, but cultural: accepting that technology can be a strategic ally for growth, getting out of the comfort zone and responding to an increasingly complex vehicle fleet, according to Salcedo.

After-sales service, historically relegated, is beginning to position itself as one of the key pillars for the competitiveness of the automotive industry in the coming years.

Freightliner has put technology at the center of its strategy for the Mexican market , focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), sustainability, and safety, according to Itzel Alpízar, the brand’s Connectivity and Electrification Strategy Manager.

The company’s vision is to maintain its pioneering leadership in the country. The first Freightliner electric vehicles are already on the market and have generated “successful experiences” among customers who have tested them, reinforcing the company’s commitment to cleaner and more efficient mobility, Alpízar noted.

The process wasn’t without its obstacles. Adopting a new technology can be daunting and disrupt the processes surrounding it.

For Freightliner, the challenge has been to break the barrier of resistance to change , which they have addressed through closeness and support with customers.

This constant interaction allowed the transition to occur in the best possible way, taking advantage of the benefits that innovations offer.

The differentiator, Itzel explained, is not limited to incorporating trends, but to designing solutions that meet the most complex needs of customers .

In terms of connectivity, the proposal stands out for its integration of road and property safety elements , which in turn contributes to greater operational efficiency and translates into profitability for those who trust the brand, Alpízar said.

For Alpízar, what keeps the company in the customer’s best interest is always placing them at the center of the strategy and solving their challenges through technology.

With seven years of experience with the company, Itzel defines Freightliner with the word “technology .” For her, this term epitomizes the identity of a company that always strives to be at the forefront in Mexico.

In August 2025, Freightliner placed 321 wholesale freight units, in an environment where the entire market showed declines compared to the previous year.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q. ROO.- Mexico remains behind the most advanced economies in the transition to electric vehicles, although it has made progress in costs and available supply, as explained by Sandra Aragonez, senior director at Alvarez & Marsal , during her participation in Top Flotillas and LOGEX 2025 .

Aragonez explained that only 4% of vehicle sales in Mexico are electric , a figure still low compared to countries like Norway, where the fleet reaches levels of up to 96%. However, he highlighted that between 2021 and 2024, the prices of these units were reduced by 37% , which has allowed for greater accessibility for consumers.

At the same time, he said that supply in the domestic market has tripled in recent years , indicating sustained growth despite the lack of clear incentives and sufficient infrastructure for cargo.

“In Mexico, sustainability goals are often the responsibility of companies, but there isn’t yet a clear national goal like there is in the Nordic countries,” Aragonez said.

In the regulatory arena, the specialist emphasized that NOM-064 will go into effect on January 1, 2025 , marking the first step toward regulating the use of clean energy in transportation. Although she considered this a step forward, she warned that the real discussion among companies is no longer whether they should migrate, but rather how to make that transition .

In addition, he raised three realities that already impact organizations:

Demand for sustainable solutions is growing steadily , driven by customers, markets, and regulations.

The technology exists and becomes more competitive every quarter .

The cost of inaction today is equivalent to a rising tax , ranging from financial and reputational impacts to permitting and financing.

Aragonez encouraged transportation and supply chain leaders to translate the transition into concrete, measurable actions: define indicators, such as energy savings or reduced delivery times; implement pilot projects within a timeframe of no more than 90 days; and understand that technology is not an isolated end, but rather a lever of business value.

“What I can’t measure, I can’t control; and what I can’t control, I can’t improve. If we want to move toward sustainability, we need to start by measuring,” he concluded.

The Coahuila Automotive Industry Cluster (CIAC) was not born with the strength of other similar organizations in Mexico; for years, it operated as an extension of that of Nuevo León, without its own structure, and it was only six years ago that it was formally established and began to chart its own course, according to its president, Lourdes (Lulú) Cobos .

Today, the cluster is working to consolidate itself as an industrial hub with its own identity, more affiliated companies, and a stronger network of academic collaboration .

With 60 member companies, the organization represents nearly 110,000 jobs in the state. Still, its president believes its potential is far from exhausted. Upon her arrival in January 2025, the priority is to attract more companies from the region, both manufacturers and suppliers, and to professionalize the internal committees that address technical, strategic, and university outreach issues .

One of the central pillars is strengthening relations with universities in Coahuila . The cluster’s council, which includes rectors from key institutions, promotes dual training models and provides feedback on educational programs based on the needs of companies.

This collaboration allowed for the updating of technical and administrative careers, integrating topics such as electromobility , foreign trade and finance .

The president (the first woman to lead the cluster) gave new impetus to the organization’s vision for the future. Her appointment was supported by a predominantly male board, which championed leadership with a different perspective, focused on inclusion and collaborative work.

Lourdes (Lulú) Cobos, president of CIAC.

From their perspective, the growth of electromobility in Mexico continues, albeit at a slower pace than projected years ago. The cluster’s commitment is not limited to electrification, but to a broader goal: the decarbonization of the automotive industry .

For Cobos, this must be a shared goal for the entire manufacturing community, both for environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility.

In addition to industrial development, the director seeks to pave the way for more women within the sector. She believed her role could inspire other female managers, directors, and academics to get involved in similar organizations.

More than a challenge, he sees it as an opportunity to demonstrate that teamwork and diversity in the automotive industry strengthen any collective project.

Cobos ‘s term as head of Coahuila’s automotive cluster is two years. Although the road is still long, the foundation has been laid: more active committees, closer academic relationships, and a clear growth strategy to position Coahuila as a leading automotive industry , not only as an export powerhouse, but also as a community with its own voice.

With the foundations now laid, the challenge now will be to sustain growth, maintain collaboration between industry and academia, and make the cluster a meeting point for strategic decisions in the sector. From Coahuila, the automotive industry seeks to increase its production and build community.

Mercedes-Benz Buses’ roadmap in Mexico has been updated with the arrival of Holger Dürrfeld as CEO. The German automaker has decided to prioritize two key areas: strengthening after-sales service and advancing the technological transition of its operations, with a long-term vision that connects the efficiency of the present with the demands of an electric future.

Dürrfeld, who assumed responsibility for the Mexican market this year, brings with him more than three decades of experience with the company and a vision built on plants and operations in France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany.

His time in Europe taught him that major transformations require patience, a global vision, and intimate knowledge of the terrain. That’s why, since his arrival, he has dedicated himself to visiting distributors, meeting clients, immersing himself in local operations, and, above all, listening, Dürrfeld said during an exclusive meeting with specialized media in the sector.

Although this first conversation did not address figures or business strategies, it did make clear that the commitment to Mexico is serious.

With a historic share of nearly 40% of the national bus market and a plant in García, Nuevo León, the brand seeks to maintain that position with a renewed focus on after-sales service, technical training, and closeness with its distributors.

Dürrfeld said he has already visited locations in Monterrey, Cancún, and Veracruz, and is preparing for a second round of visits with his sales and technical team.

One of the most visible challenges is electrification . Mercedes-Benz Buses already trains its staff in high-voltage systems, has implemented safety zones for electric vehicles in its workshops, and is making steady, albeit gradual, steps toward local production of electric chassis.

The integration of these new technologies requires considerable investment and a reconfiguration of production lines, but also a critical look at the country’s energy infrastructure.

Dürrfeld explained that he has made listening a core value. In his words, Mexico is not only one of the most important markets for the brand (in terms of volume, historical presence, and regional impact), but also an opportunity for industrial transformation that must be seized responsibly.

This isn’t the first time the executive has worked outside of Germany, but it is the first time he’s done so without his family, who will be with him starting in 2026.

“Ten times better than I imagined,” he said of Mexico, revealing that the affinity goes beyond the professional.

Beyond figures and launches, this new chapter for Mercedes-Benz Buses in Mexico is written with closeness, humility, and a vision that combines technique with purpose.

As part of the decarbonization process of river transport in Southeast Asia, CMA CGM Group , an integrator of maritime, land, air and logistics services, announced the launch of the first 100% electric container barge in Vietnam.

In a statement, CMA CGM detailed that the barge is scheduled to enter service in early 2026 to provide logistics support for Nike , a sporting goods company.

The initiative is supported by the construction of a solar-powered charging station located at the Gemalink terminal at Cai Mep Port, Vietnam’s main container gateway.

CMA CGM has signed an agreement with its partner Gemadept , a logistics and port operator in the Asian country, to establish a joint venture called Green River Transportation, which will operate the electric barge, which was jointly designed by CMA Ships and CMA CGM’s R&D teams .

“The facility is expected to generate up to one gigawatt-hour (GWh) of green electricity per year. This new zero-emission solution will reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 778 tons per year on the 180-kilometer (km) route between Binh Duong Province and Ba Roa-Vung Tau in southern Vietnam,” the maritime services integrator emphasized.

The initiative is aligned with CMA CGM’s global strategy to achieve “Net Zero Carbon by 2050, through a combination of low-carbon technologies, alternative fuels, and now zero-emission river logistics solutions,” the shipping firm said.

Maersk also goes electrified

For its part, logistics integrator AP Moller-Maersk has established a partnership with transportation provider Sotraser Chile to incorporate electric trucks into its operations.

The initiative represents a significant step toward reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in regional logistics, the Danish company stated in a statement.

“The integration of our 100% electric fleet into Maersk’s operations is not only a milestone for Sotraser, but also a clear sign that the future of logistics is already underway,” said Pedro Peña Staub, Sotraser’s Electromobility Manager.

The shipping and transport companies will have the Volvo FH Electric and FM Electric models , equipped with 540 kilowatt-hour (kWh) batteries, with an approximate range of 300 km per charge.

“These electric trucks can carry between 24 and 25 tons of cargo, a figure that complies with the gross and axle weight limits established by Chilean legislation, and guarantees performance comparable to that of traditional diesel trucks,” the shipping company emphasized.

During the pilot phase, both companies successfully implemented a 100% electric transportation operation, traveling more than 8,400 km in 31 trips.

“The collaboration with Sotraser is a significant step forward. Chile’s potential for electromobility in heavy-duty transport is promising, and ongoing projects demonstrate the benefits of electric trucks,” emphasized Alexis Rodríguez, Maersk’s Director of Energy Transition Execution in Latin America.

As part of its global initiative to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, Maersk has set an interim target for land transport. The company is currently exploring opportunities in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Panama, and Uruguay to expand these solutions.

“This will help Element increase the proportion of these types of vehicles in its fleet, contributing to significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings, estimated at 9,093 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per year by 2029. This supports the country’s commitment to reduce GHG emissions by 35% by 2030,” Element, a fleet management company, detailed in a statement.

Of the total disbursement, $75 million is in additional type A loans and $25 million in type B or parallel loans to be mobilized.

“This is the first installment of a $600 million financing package to support Element’s commercial vehicle electrification efforts in Mexico , which is aligned with the country’s decarbonization and climate goals,” the firm explained.

The investment will facilitate the acquisition of EVs by Element customers in the country, including battery electric vehicles, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, as well as the development of associated charging infrastructure, depending on the vehicle technology.

“This funding is a testament to our commitment and an enabler for creating a lasting legacy of sustainable and positive impacts within our communities.
According to the company, the financing from IFC, a member of the World Bank Group , will be structured as a sustainability-linked loan , with key performance indicators related to decarbonization and also includes an emphasis on increasing women’s participation in the workforce.

“By promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, this investment will contribute to improving the sustainability of Mexico’s transportation sector. This investment demonstrates the viability of an innovative fleet management model to increase access to electric vehicles,” said Juan Gonzalo Flores, IFC Country Manager for Mexico.

Over the past decade, IFC has committed and mobilized more than $11.3 billion for transportation projects in emerging markets.

As part of the transformation of transportation toward more sustainable solutions, Freightliner seeks to lead the adoption of clean technologies , with its focus on electrification, use of clean energy and implementation of vehicles that meet the highest emissions standards, according to Fernando Mar, Senior Manager of Strategy and Electrification at Daimler Truck Mexico .

Mar detailed the brand’s efforts to integrate solutions that respond to its customers’ diverse operational needs, adapting from last-mile to long-distance transportation.

Globally, Freightliner has implemented electric fleets in countries such as the United States and Europe, and is now working to expand this technology in the Mexican market .

In terms of sales data, according to the March 2025 report from the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , Freightliner maintains a significant share of the cargo vehicle market.

In March 2025, it sold 775 diesel-powered units at retail, representing a 26.1% market share. This figure represents a 32.6% decrease compared to March 2024, when 1,150 units were sold, representing a 38.3% market share .

In terms of wholesale sales, Freightliner reached 278 units in March 2025, representing a 12.3% market share.
