Last-mile electric mobility has become a spearhead for the energy transition in transportation in Mexico, and FedEx Mexico is marking a new milestone with the addition of 72 electric units to its fleet, bringing the total number of vehicles in operation in the country to 80.

On International Electric Vehicle Day , FedEx Mexico added the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter and Ford E-Transit models to Mexico City, where they will be used at the company’s three operating centers.

The company noted that this expansion is part of its global strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 , which also coincides with its 35th anniversary in the country.

“This year is a very important year in the history of FedEx in Mexico. Not only are we celebrating 35 years of presence in one of the company’s most strategic markets, we’re also reaffirming our commitment to sustainability by incorporating these new electric units,” said Jorge Torres, Vice President of Operations for FedEx Mexico.

The executive added in an interview with T21 that the incorporation of this electric fleet, more than a challenge, ” we see it as an opportunity to join the strategy of the transportation industry and also that of the federal and local governments to contribute to this transformation .”

He also noted that Mexico contributes to its 2040 goal as one of the more than 220 countries and territories where FedEx operates.

For his part, Enrique Mora, Director of Planning and Engineering at FedEx Mexico, emphasized that the initiative reflects a corporate vision that combines innovation and environmental responsibility.

“Today we are expanding our electric fleet as part of a global strategy based on three pillars: decarbonizing as much as possible, co-creating with purpose, and neutralizing the rest. In Mexico, this translates into concrete decisions such as the gradual electrification of our fleet, investment in charging infrastructure, and training for our team,” he said.

Currently, the new vehicles have eight charging stations at the capital’s operating centers, allowing them to reach up to 260 km of range per charge, with an average recharge time of three hours. They are also equipped with advanced safety and driver assistance systems.

Representing the local government, Manola Zabalza, head of the Mexico City Secretariat of Economic Development , highlighted the impact of electromobility in the capital.

“The addition of these 72 units is equivalent to planting 90,000 trees. Mexico City already has one of the largest electrified public transportation networks in the world, and collaboration with companies like FedEx strengthens this vision for the future,” he stated.

This effort is not limited to ground transportation; Jorge Torres told this outlet that the strategy also includes the air fleet and packaging materials .

“Today, we have two of the four ATR 72-600F aircraft we operate in Mexico, aircraft that are much more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. Added to this is the reduction in the impact of our packaging. Together, ground vehicles, air transport, and materials are three fundamental pillars of our sustainability strategy,” explained Torres.

For FedEx, fleet electrification not only responds to an environmental commitment, but also to the need to ensure the long-term sustainability of the business .

“It’s vitally important. Having a presence in all 32,000 postal codes across the country forces us to redouble our commitment to the environment through tangible initiatives like this one,” he emphasized.

With this new electric fleet, FedEx seeks to strengthen its operations in the nation’s capital and consolidate its role as a key player in the transition toward a more efficient and sustainable logistics model.
