Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) continues talks with Awesome Cargo to have the Mexican cargo company land at the U.S. airport and load more goods from trucking onto the plane.

“We had some interesting talks with Mas , but we didn’t reach anything concrete, although they are aware of the opportunity that exists at DFW to Mexico, also to transport cargo with a stopover in Mexico and continue on to South America, a region where we have strong demand,” explained Milton de la Paz, Vice President of Airline Relations and Cargo Business Development at DFW.

In an interview with T21, he considered that, due to the current demand in markets like China , on which both Mexican airlines have focused, their arrival at that airport has not yet materialized.

He explained that after the actions implemented by the United States against e-commerce from China, a large percentage changed their destination to South America, which represents a great opportunity for Mexican cargo companies.

“The stretch between Dallas and Mexico is short, it won’t generate much revenue, but there is demand,” he stressed.

The executive commented that currently a large amount of cargo between Mexico and Dallas is moved by land, while less is moved by air, since the cargo holds of aircraft have less capacity, and the priority is passenger luggage.

He explained that goods such as semiconductors, as well as supplies from sectors such as aerospace, automotive and perishables, are among the products that would be moved by cargo ships.

Regarding cargo handling at the close of 2025 in DFW, Milton de la Paz stated that they had a growth of almost 7% year-on-year , which he considered “a great achievement” in light of the tariffs announced by the US government at the beginning of last year.

“We overcame it and grew, it was over 850,000 tons, and what drove the growth were the artificial intelligence centers, and that sector increased imports of this type of equipment,” he emphasized.

Under that scenario, he explained that so far they have not registered a major impact from the conflict in the Middle East , but rather that more cargo planes from Asia have landed at DFW.

“We’re seeing more cargo traffic from Asia, which is good for us, particularly for the technology sector. What we lost, we’re gaining elsewhere, and that’s helped us. Also, there are congested airports, and Dallas has capacity; plus, we’re close to Mexico and have good access to the country,” he said.

He noted that they are making investments to strengthen the cargo infrastructure, and are conducting studies for the construction of new warehouses with new technology for better handling of goods in the future.

The executive explained that their plans include controlling cargo movement at the airport , since currently the handling of goods is done by different companies.

“Currently, one warehouse is managed by one company, another by a different one; they can’t coordinate, and that’s not good for the ecosystem. That’s why we want to see how to control all of that and raise the standard in cargo handling, which can be greatly improved. We want to be recognized as an airport that offers excellent cargo handling services. It’s something we’ve been studying for a long time, and it’s something that will change the airport’s dynamics,” he concluded.

“We’re working with many Mexican freight forwarders to increase perishables from Mexico, not only to the Texas area but also to those continuing on to Asia. American Airlines unloads a lot of cargo in Dallas from Asia and Europe, but doesn’t have the capacity to fly it to Mexico and has to go overland. Therefore, with the two Mexican freighters, they can move more cargo,” said Milton de la Paz, vice president of Airline Relations and Cargo Business Development at DFW Airport.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has begun construction of Terminal F, which will cost around $1.6 billion and will be ready by 2027. It will be the sixth and will feature a double-loaded boarding bridge with 15 gates and modern amenities for customers.

“The new terminal will expand the airport’s reach with state-of-the-art facilities that align with our world-class customer experience and operation, while supporting the historic increase in air travel to and from the North Texas region,” said Sean Donohue, DFW CEO.

He explained that this new facility will have a 400,000-square-foot boarding corridor and also includes an expansion of Terminal E, which will add more than 9,290 square meters of new security, documentation and baggage claim facilities.

Passengers using Terminal F will check in at Terminal E and connect between the two facilities via a quick terminal-to-terminal transfer via the airport’s Skylink rail system.

“Terminal F plays a key role in preparing for the historic growth ahead for both DFW Airport and the North Texas community. This new terminal will enable us to continue to discover new ways to care for our customers, inspire the future of travel, feed our community with more jobs and create opportunities for business in our region,” said DeMetris Sampson, Chairman of the DFW Airport Board of Directors.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW ) will close this year with a slight increase of between 2% and 3% in cargo handling , close to 800 thousand tons year-on-year, according to its own forecasts.

Milton de la Paz, vice president of Airline Relations and Cargo Business Development at DFW Airport, explained that there are several factors that prevent further growth, such as lack of capacity.

He explained, for example, that they have a strong cargo network to Asia, almost all the key cargo ships operate in DFW, however, not much is exported, so a better balance is required, having more capacity from Mexico and South America so that they can feed the cargo ships that return to that continent.

He explained that another factor is that almost a million tons of cargo are transported from Texas to other airports by land , such as Los Angeles or Chicago, as well as to Miami, where, for example, flights are made to South America.

“We need that capacity to capture that cargo. We are talking with companies, with more maquiladoras in Juarez that take all their cargo that goes to South America through El Paso, they take it up to Miami to take it to Brazil, that takes 14 days and if we had a freighter from Dallas to Brazil, that could be done in three days and 10 days would be saved,” he explained in an interview with T21.

He recalled that it was in 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when DFW managed to move one million tons, which has gradually decreased.

However, he said they are also investing $200 million in new cargo facilities, given the growth of the sector and their strategy to receive more international e-commerce .

“In fact, part of our strategy is to manage e-commerce in Asia and connect it to Mexico, because we know that there is a very strong demand in Mexico and e-commerce companies are very interested in the growth they are seeing in the country,” he said without giving further details.

In this regard, he mentioned that for the first time in its history they will be the owners of the new cargo terminals , “in this way we can control who operates in our airport, we can ensure that the level of security, efficiency and cargo handling is the highest, because we decide who operates in our airport.”

De la Paz reiterated that they are continuing talks with a Mexican cargo company that is currently waiting for new aircraft to begin operating in Dallas Fort Worth.

In addition, his plans include starting to transport pharmacists from India, China and Europe to Mexico and South America, “but that takes time, because years of experience and trust must be demonstrated.”

They are going for more infrastructure

He also said that they were investing more than nine billion dollars in various works , both for maintenance and for new projects. The first phase of these works will be ready in 2027.

He explained that part of the investment will be for infrastructure inside and outside the airport terminals and for new highways and bridges adjacent to this infrastructure.

He also mentioned that nine additional boarding gates, cargo warehouses and a power station will be built.

“The investments are all over the airport, not only in passenger terminals, but also in cargo terminals and in infrastructure, which is also important,” he said.

By 2030, DFW expects passenger traffic of more than 100 million passengers, an aggressive growth, but by the end of this year alone they expect a 10% increase compared to 2023, which was close to 80 million passengers. While by 2025 they estimate it will be 90 million users.

“We are receiving 300 thousand passengers a day, which is the equivalent of three Azteca stadiums,” he said.
