RIVIERA MAYA, Q. ROO. – While there have been some changes in greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals globally, after the United States, under President Donald Trump’s administration, shifted its strategy to regain momentum in fossil fuels, Cummins maintains its vision of Destination Zero.

Jorge Machuca, Engine Segment Leader for Cummins Latin America, emphasized that the firm aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. “We know that many companies’ commitment is not to the authorities, but to the environment, and that’s where we have applications that contribute to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) strategies.”

Jorge Machuca, Engine Segment Leader for Cummins Latin America.

According to Machuca, in the case of Mexico, Cummins is working with customers on the energy transition, in collaboration with its dealer network and participating with different organizations such as the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (Conuee) and the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) .

On that route, in the last quarter of the year Cummins will be incorporating the X15N natural gas engines, according to Lucía López, commercial director, who anticipated that deliveries to national transporters will begin around this period, mainly with the two Kenworth models with which they have a partnership, the T680 and T880 .

Lucía López, commercial director of Cummins.

Regarding other technologies, executives noted that hydrogen is one of the most viable alternatives for achieving improved performance and greater impact on emissions generation; however, Mexico lacks a defined roadmap for specifying the timeframes for adopting this type of technology.

Lucía López emphasized that in Cummins’ Destination Zero strategy , the adoption of the X15 Euro VI engines also contributes to this strategy, since compared to Euro V equipment, 5% fuel efficiency is achieved.

In addition, there is evidence that up to 113,000 kilometers have already been traveled to complete the fuel change, incorporating the technological ally Valvoline.

Market penetration

Even with the challenges faced in the market due to the pace of vehicle sales and the prevailing uncertainty, Jorge Machuca shared that in the first quarter of 2025 the brand’s progress is maintained as budgeted, with revenues of 188 million dollars (mdd), “which is aligned with the operations plan and the pace of the market . ”

Machuca said that based on the data available, six out of every 10 tractor-trailers are equipped with the Cummins engine, which, he explained, is the result of the incorporation of new technologies.

Lucía López emphasized that progress is being made in the incorporation of the X15 Euro VI , where the 5% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the Euro V can be greater if the integrated powertrain is incorporated.

Federico García, OEM Powertrain Sales Leader for Mexico and Latin America at Cummins.

Federico García, OEM Sales Leader for Powertrains in Mexico and Latin America at Cummins, explained that in the case of axles, the Meritor brand has a seven-out-of-ten market share in the tractor-trailer segment.

“In the integrated powertrain, we’re making progress on certain technologies and innovations, such as the RT-160 HE rear axle . Customers are responding very well to this, and we hope they continue to see the benefits of fuel savings. This efficiency will allow us to continue to conquer the market,” García explained.

Among the advantages of the RT-160 HE rear axle is a 1.5% increase in fuel efficiency compared to the previous version , while reducing oil use by five liters, which translates into less pollution and a savings of $30 per tandem axle.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q. ROO. – In 2025 and according to what was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) , starting on the first day of next year the NOM-044 on diesel engine emissions will undergo an update, thus, the EURO 6 technology binomial / EPA 10 will be in force for imports and production of heavy units in Mexico.

In this context, the heavy vehicle industry must work to generate certainty in the market and work to achieve the adoption of new technologies, according to Jorge Machuca, leader of the engine segment for Cummins Latin America. This will have a benefit in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Within the framework of the 24th National Freight Transport Forum , Machuca said that since the modification of NOM-044 has been published, the EURO 5 / EPA 07 binomial will end, and therefore a pre-purchase of the current technology could be experienced by the same natural distrust that is generated by new implementations.

Faced with this scenario, Jorge Machuca said that the X15 Euro 6 engine platform, together with the transmission and axles of its comprehensive offer, translates into achieving an improvement in fuel economy of 5% derived from engine efficiency. , as well as the electronic characteristics of the drive axle, the above is combined with an improvement of up to 35% compared to Euro 5 engine technology.

Within the framework of the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP) event , Cummins launched the HELM ( Higher Efficiency Lower Emissions Multiple Fuels ) platform, which groups together equipment with higher efficiency, lower emissions and a fuel-independent architecture.

Jorge Machuca described that with HELM diesel engines will continue to be the best efficiency option on the market, and their life will be extended in the distant horizon of 20 to 30 years. It is even estimated that this platform will be able to meet the new EURO 7 / EPA 27 emissions regulations.

Cummins introduced the X15N natural gas engine , the first of the Cummins HELM platforms available to customers.

With this platform, up to 20% biodiesel mixtures and up to 100% renewable diesel mixtures can be used, and even with the incursion of hydrogen, where Mexico will be the first country to incorporate it in Latin America, in the United States there is planned to integrate it in 2028.
