Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) celebrates its third anniversary on April 14th as the only rail network connecting Canada, the United States, and Mexico; a merger that has led to the development of new services to serve these markets.

The merger of these Class 1 rail companies also helped to boost the region’s competitiveness by strengthening support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as multiple industries based in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

In its first month of operation, it launched the Mexico Midwest Express (MMX), a premium intermodal service that offers a single line between Mexico and Chicago, without the need to change trains at the border, competitive in time and cost when compared to trucking.

CPKC also signed a new multi-year agreement with Schneider National , one of the largest transportation and logistics service providers, to provide new single-line intermodal transportation services on the north-south rail corridor connecting Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Meanwhile, with CSX Corporation (CSX) , the railroads launched the Southeast Mexico Express (SMX) service, providing faster transit times , increased capacity, and sustainable solutions on the new Class 1 east-west corridor connecting carriers in Mexico, Texas, and the southeastern United States.

“Our MMX, the fastest and most reliable service in the industry between the Midwest and the interior of Mexico, continues to grow and perform extremely well. And we are bringing that same model to Mexico and the Southeast United States, in partnership with CSX and our Southeast Mexico Express service. That business is just beginning to move. With our partners, we see a great growth opportunity in that corridor. We have created the best transit time in the industry in partnership with CSX from Atlanta to Dallas via the Meridian Speedway and from Atlanta to Monterrey. Competitive by truck to Dallas and superior by truck to Mexico,” stated Keith Creel, president and CEO of CPKC, at the time.

CPKC announced in its fourth quarter 2025 report that in the following months, it would launch the new SMX service with CSX, from central Mexico to the Atlanta, Charlotte, and Jacksonville markets in approximately four days or less.

Meanwhile, with Americold Realty Trust, they announced that they will formally explore joint development opportunities in Mexico for the cold chain to benefit goods transiting through the North American region.

Americold plans to invest between $500 million and $1 billion over the next five to ten years in projects with the railway company and its other strategic partner, DP World .

On February 7, 2025, CPKC inaugurated the “Patrick J. Ottensmeyer” International Rail Bridge , which will double the company’s capacity on the border, specifically at the point between Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, and Laredo, Texas, strengthening trade between Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Similarly, the railway company held the Final Spike Steam tour, headlined by CP 2816 “The Empress”.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) has declined to participate in any immediate consolidation of the rail industry , despite suggestions from some that it might, saying it is not necessary for the industry as it is currently structured.

“We believe a transcontinental merger would trigger a permanent restructuring of the industry and result in a disproportionately large railroad whose size and scope would require others to take action,” said Keith Creel, president and CEO of CPKC.

He explained that if implemented, it would likely result in an unnecessary wave of railroad mergers , “which is not the best way to support American businesses or the public interest today, and has the potential to create more problems than it solves.”

The company, he stated, remains focused on delivering more benefits and unique value-creating opportunities from its tri-nation network, which connects shippers across North America through effective interline service options.

“CPKC firmly believes that, given what the existing competitive landscape has proven to offer, any major rail merger poses unique and unprecedented risks to customers, rail employees, and the broader supply chain. Those risks would be exacerbated by the inevitable subsequent consolidation,” he said.

In this regard, he noted that the six major railroads in the United States are capable of offering their customers high-quality , virtually seamless transportation services across the continent.

This, he said, as evidenced by CPKC and CSX ‘s previous partnerships in the Southeast, as well as the recently announced partnership between BNSF and CSX, remains an opportunity for further cooperation between railroads “willing” to improve service and preserve optionality for shippers.

He also noted that benefits in support of transcontinental mergers can be achieved through new and expanded industry partnerships , innovations in customer service, and additional cooperation among railroads.

“CPKC continues to pursue these opportunities, such as its recently announced collaboration with CSX on the Southeast Mexico Express service connecting the southeastern United States with Mexico,” Creel said.

Against this backdrop, he indicated that the U.S. rail network has the capacity and operational fluidity necessary to safely drive many years of service improvement, volume growth, truck conversion, and the resulting value creation for the nation’s rail carriers in support of the U.S. economy.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico announced that refrigerated service will begin next August with the Monterrey-Kansas City, San Luis Potosí-Kansas City, and a third route that was not revealed .

“We’re going to bring animal products and food from Kansas City to Mexico. The idea is to start with the MMX (Mexico West Express) train. Today we’re bringing 2,400 meters of rail, between 80 and 90 cars, and we’re going to load refrigerated cargo onto that train,” said Oscar Del Cueto, president of the railroad.

In an interview, he mentioned that they have already met with authorities from the National Service of Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica) , as well as with Julio Berdegué Sacristán, head of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) , in order to address the issues related to carrying out the movement of refrigerated goods.

“The document has already been sent to the United States to place the Senasica inspectors in Kansas, and Senasica has everything ready to have them. All that’s left is for the U.S. government to sign it, and it’s going very well,” he stated.

He specified that they estimate that this service will begin next August , in addition to the construction of the import and export center in Port Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, which will be ready in 2026, while in Kansas City the first cold storage facility will be inaugurated in that month.

Del Cueto recalled that they had already conducted tests for this type of service from Monterrey to the United States .

It’s worth noting that in 2023, CPKC and Americold Realty Trust established a strategic partnership to optimize temperature-controlled logistics across North America. As part of this agreement, Americold plans to invest between $500 million and $1 billion over the next five to 10 years in development projects with the railroad and its other strategic partner, DP World .

Meanwhile, CPKC added 1,000 new 53-foot combined transport refrigerated containers to its network, doubling its existing fleet and providing more shipping options to customers using the Mexico Oeste Express (MMX) combined transport service.

MMX is North America’s first single-line rail service serving refrigerated freight shippers from the Midwest to Mexico, a market currently served by trucks.

Regarding a possible impact from the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum, Del Cueto ruled out any impact; they are even waiting for the Mexican government to announce what actions will be taken in this regard.

“We had noticed that they were keeping the cost in Mexico, while exports continued. Remember, we have a trade imbalance with the United States; there are more imports, but I think there should be an adjustment in tariffs, and it’s too early to say whether there will be an impact on manufacturing (of railroad equipment). President Trump’s idea of creating these tariffs in the United States is to protect the industry. I think there will be resolutions soon; we’ll have to wait and see what the Mexican government says,” he emphasized.

He reiterated that the company had a good quarter despite the initial tariff actions ; however, they are currently seeking to move merchandise from Canada to Mexico and vice versa, and to use the United States as a bridge to avoid tariffs. In this regard, he stated that they are already experiencing volume growth in LP gas (liquefied petroleum gas), grains, and plastics.

Likewise, he explained that after a review and new designs for the route, the Mexico-Querétaro passenger train would only be using nine kilometers (km) of its tracks; however, how it would operate at that point, which is already close to Querétaro, has not yet been analyzed.

“New designs were made, there were different proposals where a different construction could be done so as not to affect the charging infrastructure, and the goal of the president (Claudia Sheinbaum) and the regulatory agency is to avoid using our infrastructure and build new ones, and that is being achieved,” he explained.

The Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) stated a few weeks ago that passenger trains will run on dedicated tracks , although there are approximately five kilometers of track that are “extremely difficult” due to their topography, so a mixed operation would be carried out.

It is worth remembering that Americold began construction of this storage space in Kansas City, Missouri , with an investment of 127 million dollars (mdd) , has 335 thousand square feet and will support CPKC’s Mexico Midwest Express (MMX) service .

Also, as part of this service, the railroad added 1,000 new 53-foot refrigerated intermodal containers to its network , offering more shipping options to customers using the MMX. These units ensure that products requiring temperature protection are transported safely in a fast, reliable, and fuel-efficient service that provides alternatives and increased competition to North American supply chains.

The two companies established a strategic collaboration in June 2023 to optimize temperature-controlled logistics in North America.

Americold plans to invest between $500 million and $1 billion over the next five to 10 years in development projects with CPKC and its other strategic partner, DP World .

Regarding passenger rail projects in Mexico, Keith Creel indicated that with the government’s decision to run these trains on separate, parallel lines, freight operations will continue.

“They’re going to build a dedicated passenger line so we don’t have to mix it with freight transport, so we can continue operating freight trains,” he emphasized.

He commented that Mexican authorities see benefits in not only getting people off the roads and onto rail, but also trucks, “which is good for our industry.”

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Rotary donated $285,000 to plant 140,000 trees at Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries in Michoacán.

“The monarch butterfly is the symbol of union and brotherhood between the three countries, which are precisely the butterfly countries through which our freight railway travels,” said Oscar del Cueto, president of CPKC of Mexico.

Meanwhile, the Rotary International Foundation approved a global grant for more than $155,000.

These projects are made up of the ecological programs MOMA 2022, with 130 thousand dollars, which translate into 70 thousand trees, and MOMA HOPE 2023, with 155 thousand dollars, which will become 70 thousand trees.

Therefore, through the efforts of CPKC and the Rotarians of North America, “the butterflies will continue to beautify the landscape, as the project aims to continue the reforestation of three important sanctuaries in Michoacán: Santuario Sierra El Campanario, Santuario Sierra Chincua and Cerro Pelón Sanctuary.”

It is worth remembering that since 2020, CPKC and Los Rotarios created “The Monarch Butterfly Challenge” , a fundraising program in North America, in order to purchase two-year-old Oyamel trees from community nurseries. life, which would later become the “home” of the butterflies, which stay in the country between the months of November and March.

While this August 17, CPKC, business and community leaders from Michoacán and representatives of Rotary Clubs from districts 6040, 4130 and 4140, will hold a great Reforestation Day.

They will be planting trees planted locally with resources from the MOMA 2022 campaign that raised 70 thousand trees for the El Rosario Sanctuary, between the limits of Michoacán and the State of Mexico.

“It is an honor for us as Rotarians of District 4140, to work in favor of the Monarch Butterfly, which is an emblematic seal of unity and brotherhood in Mexico and in the world,” said Maru Molina, coordinator of the program in Michoacán.

Likewise, civil society organizations have been working on forest restoration for years, such as the Neovolcanic Axis Conservation Fund, which coordinates one of the most important projects at the national level of Payments for Environmental Services in the Area.

The execution of the project is under the supervision of Biologist Eligio García Serrano, who has been conserving the monarch butterfly hibernation forests for more than three decades together with local communities and providing timely follow-up to the project in the long term.

In total, 140 thousand trees will be planted, reforesting these three important sanctuaries in Michoacán, generating a significant positive impact on carbon capture and recharge of the aquifers of the Cutzamala system, which supplies drinking water to Mexico City and the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico.

This project has also been crystallized through the Rotary Club Monterrey Metropolitano, Rotary Club Diamante Ciudad Hidalgo, Rotarians of Districts 4130, 4140, 6040, 5060, Patrick Ottensmeyer and Deanne Porter, Government of Michoacán, Johnson Controls, ArcelorMittal, Orsan, Even Group, NASCO, Viakable, DYASA, UPS, GATX, Grupo Acerero, Bulkmatic, Vitro, Fibra Prologis and APM Terminals, among others.
