Contecon Manzanillo reported that it put three new container yards into operation , adding nearly eight hectares to its operational capacity, as part of the third phase of its expansion project, according to a press release issued by the company.

This development will allow handling more than 200 thousand additional 20-foot containers (TEU) per year , which represents a significant increase in the available infrastructure.

The expansion project, which began in 2022, was brought forward due to increased trade and logistics demand.

In the first eight months of this year, the port of Manzanillo registered a 9% increase in container handling , reaching 2.6 million TEUs, while the Contecon terminal had a 15% growth in the same period.

In addition, works in Phase III include the addition of yards, the expansion of docks and the incorporation of new equipment for cargo management.

José Antonio Contreras, CEO of Contecon Manzanillo, said that “these new yards will increase operational capacity, which is essential to meet current demand.”

He said the facilities are designed to optimize the handling of goods and improve efficiency in transit times within the terminal.

The port of Manzanillo is a key point for Mexico’s foreign trade , and this type of expansion is necessary to meet both national and international demand.

Furthermore, it is estimated that, with the completion of this expansion phase, the terminal’s capacity could increase by between 40% and 45% , according to data provided by the company.

The third phase of expansion will continue in 2024, with new construction on additional yards and docks.

Additionally, the port operator reported that work on a fourth phase is expected to begin next year , which seeks to continue increasing the port’s capacity in response to growing global logistics demand.
