Due to an uncertain economic environment, as well as the conflict in the Middle East and other factors, MERA Corporation , an operator of restaurants and franchises in airports, indicated that these businesses have recorded a decrease in consumption of between 3% and 15% in July 2026 compared to the same month in 2025 .

Juan Pablo Aguirre, vice president of MERA Corporation, explained that even during the World Cup, which took place in Mexico, the United States and Canada, they saw impacts on the economic impact.

“Having the World Cup in different countries is starting to erode the economic impact, and we’re not talking about the same economic benefits that could have been obtained. It’s been a difficult economic year for many sectors, and people are also spending less. What might have been a family traveling domestically for 40,000 or 80,000 pesos a week, was now just two or four tickets for the World Cup,” he explained.

According to the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC) , more than 70% of restaurants did not increase their sales during the World Cup event; in fact, it reported that more than 50% of businesses had an occupancy rate of less than 50 percent.

In an interview with the media, Aguirre specified that some airports have seen an increase in business compared to the same period last year. However, he indicated that to compensate for the decrease, they have implemented strategies such as menu optimization to achieve a more reasonable profit margin and, in turn, offer greater benefits to travelers.

Similarly, he said that each airport requires a commercial strategy, since on several occasions concessionaires charge above-market rents because they have to pay high concession fees.

“Many times they are forced to charge above-market rents, and that creates a very delicate ecosystem. They don’t really understand which premises will be used as restaurants, or they might add too many, and that can diminish the quality,” he stressed.

He also indicated that an airport group already applies discounts to concessionaires so that, among other things, they can compensate for passing on better prices to customers, “that is one solution.”

MERA Corporation has a presence in the United States, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, and Mexico, where it operates in 15 airports, including Cancun, Merida, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Ciudad Juarez.

Juan Pablo Aguirre did not rule out a possible arrival at an airport in Mexico City ; however, he said that at certain times they have arrived “late to the bidding processes. It would be very beneficial for these contracts to have a more continuous frequency, with longer contract durations, to further incentivize the Metropolitan Area.”

In 2024, the wholesale trade sector contributed 49.8% of total income from the supply of goods and services nationwide , the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Thursday .

According to the results of the Annual Trade Survey (EAC) , the agency also reported that 48.9% of these revenues came from agricultural and forestry raw materials for industry, and waste materials . This was followed by wholesale trade of groceries, food, beverages, ice, and tobacco , with 25.9%, and the intermediation subsector , with 0.2%.

Regarding fixed assets , he emphasized that wholesale trade companies invested mainly in real estate (27.7%) and in machinery and production equipment (21.2%), while computer equipment and peripherals represented 5 percent.

During the period, men accounted for 65.6% of the workforce, while women contributed 34.4%. Meanwhile, wages paid were distributed as follows: 34.8% to women and 65.2% to men.

Within the retail sector , 30% of revenue from the supply of goods and services came from the motor vehicle, parts, and fuel subsector . This was followed by retail trade in self-service and department stores . The subsector with the smallest share was that of sales exclusively through the internet, printed catalogs, television, and similar channels, which accounted for 0.8%.

The EAC detailed that the largest proportion in fixed assets corresponded to real estate (54.8%), transport units and equipment (12.7%) and computer equipment and peripherals with 6.2 percent.

During the cycle, women accounted for 52.5% of the average annual employment compared to 47.5% for men, while wages were distributed 48% for women and 52% for men.

According to Inegi, the Annual Trade Survey aims to capture and generate basic statistical information and economic indicators for the reference year, allowing us to understand the trends, factors and dynamics of commercial activity in Mexico.

This year, the commercial sector in Mexico has experienced mixed performance. According to the Monthly Survey of Commercial Enterprises (EMEC) , wholesale trade saw a 2.5% monthly increase in September alone, while retail trade remained unchanged month-on-month.

This behavior has resulted from lower consumption in the domestic market, as well as an increase in inflation, low employment expectations and external pressures, which have impacted consumer confidence.

A climate of business caution and a modest growth rate have marked the Mexican economy during the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, according to economic analyst Pedro Tello.

In the framework of the conference X-ray of the first year of government , carried out by the National Association of Vehicle Tracking and Protection Companies (ANERPV) , Tello exemplified his analysis as if it were an airplane, where the economy depends on four turbines: consumption, productive investment, government spending and exports , of which three present important failures, which anticipates a complicated economic period.

“Three of our four engines aren’t working well. We’re a country that can grow at a faster pace, but we don’t currently have the capacity to do so,” he warned.

The specialist said that the consumption of goods and services, which he believes is the main driver of the Mexican economy, has lost momentum . In the first half of 2025, consumption declined by 0.5%, he noted.

Regarding the second driver, productive investment, Tello indicated that this indicator also showed signs of slowing . The first half of 2025 saw a 6.9% drop compared to the same period in 2024, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) .

Tello described government spending, which represents the third driver, as unproductive, since net public sector spending has exceeded the amount approved by the legislature in recent years.

The fourth driver, exports, is the only one of the four that shows favorable results , according to Tello, with a total of 52.519 billion dollars (mdd) in August 2025. However, he indicated that the discrepancy between the trade surplus with the United States of 250.1 billion dollars in 2024, compared to a trade deficit with China of 119.9 billion dollars in the same period, means that Mexico is a “springboard” for Chinese products to the American Union.

Mexican tariffs

Regarding the tariffs the federal government plans to impose on more than 1,400 products from countries with which Mexico does not have trade agreements, Tello emphasized that it is part of a strategy to strengthen domestic production .

He clarified that this measure will not apply to inputs or intermediate goods, as the country lacks viable substitutes in the short term. A study conducted by four consulting firms revealed that it would take Mexico at least five years to replace just 25% of imported intermediate products , essential for key sectors such as the automotive and electronics industries.

The specialist noted that, although the decision points in the right direction, the pace of private investment stimulus is slow , hampered by the rise of organized crime and a fiscal environment that is causing caution among business leaders.

Tello believes that economic success will depend on Sheinbaum’s ability to establish strong relationships with entrepreneurs of all sizes , especially small and micro-businesses, who still lack the support needed to integrate into an environment of certainty that fosters investment and national well-being.

With more than 78 years of history in Mexico, Javier Lostao, Business Director of Consumer Group Mexico, emphasized that 3M is a diversified company whose main objective is innovation, and that 60% of the company’s consumer business is produced in Mexican plants.

“Mexico is not just a manufacturing center, it’s a technological hub of global importance,” he emphasized.

3M is a global company dedicated to the science of everyday life, founded more than 120 years ago in the United States. The company has grown into a diversified conglomerate operating in sectors such as transportation and electronics, industrial safety, healthcare, and consumer products , with a portfolio that includes more than 60,000 products, many of which are present in everyday life, from adhesive tapes, Post-it notes, and Scotch-Brite fibers.

In this sense, with a presence in San Luis Potosí, Ciudad Juárez and Ensenada , 3M plants supply both the local market and various countries in America.

“What we produce in Mexico doesn’t stay only here; we export around 60% of the consumer products manufactured in our plants,” Lostao explained.

The company also highlighted its efforts in the circular economy and sustainability , reincorporating between 5% and 40% of production waste into new processes, and promoting the transition to recycled packaging and less plastic use.

In terms of logistics, the combination of advanced manufacturing and automated processes has allowed for reduced production, packaging, and distribution times, increasing supply efficiency both in Mexico and abroad.

3M’s strategy also relies on omnichannel campaigns , integrating point-of-sale presence with digital and e-commerce platforms to respond to new consumer purchasing behaviors.

“We want to be in every home in Mexico, offering solutions that make life easier, but always with innovation, quality, and environmental responsibility,” Lostao emphasized.

Figures released Friday show that consumer confidence fell again in the third month of this year, marking a five-month decline , reflecting a decline in households’ overall perception of their economic situation and that of the country.

The Inegi report also indicated that, in its annual comparison and with seasonally adjusted figures, the ICC registered an annual drop of 1.3 units .

“Within the framework, monthly decreases were observed in the components that capture the expected economic situation of household members, as well as in those corresponding to the country’s current and future economic situation. Meanwhile, the indicators that assess the current economic situation of household members and the current ability of household members to purchase durable goods remained at a similar level to the previous month,” the agency stated.

In March 2025, the component that measures the current economic situation of household members compared to 12 months ago decreased by 1.3 pointscompared to the third month of 2024.

Meanwhile, the expected economic situation of household members in 12 months, compared to the current situation, decreased by 1.8 points annually. The country’s economic situation today, compared to 12 months ago, fell by 2 points annually during March of this year.

Meanwhile, the component that measures the country’s expected economic situation in 12 months, relative to the current situation, decreased by 1.6 units compared to March 2024.

Regarding household members’ current purchasing possibilities for furniture, televisions, washing machines, and other household appliances, compared to a year ago, the figure remained unchanged from the third month of last year.

The new US administration, led by Donald Trump , and the uncertainty generated by the string of tariffs imposed by the United States, have contributed to the decline in consumer confidence in March.

According to the financial institution Banamex , lower domestic consumption in the coming months could be one of the consequences of Trump’s tariffs, which are expected to be inflationary .
