After closing 2025 with a monthly increase of 0.6 points, consumer confidence in Mexico fell in January 2026 , due to the economic situation in households and the increase in the price of some products and services, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) and the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) reported on Friday .

According to the Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI), during the first month of the year, consumer confidence registered a decrease of 0.6 points compared to December 2025. The indicator also fell in its annual measurement, with a decline of 2.7 units last January.

Within it, and with seasonally adjusted figures, monthly decreases were observed in the five components that make up the ICC .

Last January, the component that measures the current economic situation of household members compared to what it was 12 months ago was the one that fell the most, registering a drop of 0.9 monthly points.

This was followed by the expected economic situation of household members within 12 months compared to the current situation, with a decrease of 0.7 units compared to December 2025.

The country’s economic situation today compared to 12 months ago, and the country’s expected economic situation in 12 months compared to the current one, registered declines of 0.5 points each, compared to the last month of last year.

Meanwhile, the indicator that measures the current ability of household members, compared to a year ago, to make purchases of furniture and appliances, decreased by 0.4 units per month.

On an annual basis, four of the five components that make up the ICC registered declines , with the expected economic situation of the country in 12 months compared to the current one showing the greatest decline at 6.5 points.

Conversely, the ability of household members to make purchases of furniture and appliances at the present time, compared to a year ago, was the only component that grew, with 0.4 units compared to January 2025.

Private consumption is one of the most important components of the Mexican economy, since between this indicator and investment, they represent 80% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

However, projections from international institutions and organizations, such as the International Chamber of Commerce Mexico (ICC Mexico) , have indicated that a recovery in spending on goods and services is not anticipated during 2026, due to the effects of tariffs from the American Union and the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (USMCA) .

According to the results of the Annual Trade Survey (EAC) , the agency also reported that 48.9% of these revenues came from agricultural and forestry raw materials for industry, and waste materials . This was followed by wholesale trade of groceries, food, beverages, ice, and tobacco , with 25.9%, and the intermediation subsector , with 0.2%.

Regarding fixed assets , he emphasized that wholesale trade companies invested mainly in real estate (27.7%) and in machinery and production equipment (21.2%), while computer equipment and peripherals represented 5 percent.

During the period, men accounted for 65.6% of the workforce, while women contributed 34.4%. Meanwhile, wages paid were distributed as follows: 34.8% to women and 65.2% to men.

Within the retail sector , 30% of revenue from the supply of goods and services came from the motor vehicle, parts, and fuel subsector . This was followed by retail trade in self-service and department stores . The subsector with the smallest share was that of sales exclusively through the internet, printed catalogs, television, and similar channels, which accounted for 0.8%.

The EAC detailed that the largest proportion in fixed assets corresponded to real estate (54.8%), transport units and equipment (12.7%) and computer equipment and peripherals with 6.2 percent.

During the cycle, women accounted for 52.5% of the average annual employment compared to 47.5% for men, while wages were distributed 48% for women and 52% for men.

According to Inegi, the Annual Trade Survey aims to capture and generate basic statistical information and economic indicators for the reference year, allowing us to understand the trends, factors and dynamics of commercial activity in Mexico.

This year, the commercial sector in Mexico has experienced mixed performance. According to the Monthly Survey of Commercial Enterprises (EMEC) , wholesale trade saw a 2.5% monthly increase in September alone, while retail trade remained unchanged month-on-month.

This behavior has resulted from lower consumption in the domestic market, as well as an increase in inflation, low employment expectations and external pressures, which have impacted consumer confidence.

In Mexico, purchasing decisions no longer depend solely on price, as factors such as planning, trust in digital platforms, and flexible payment methods are redefining consumer behavior.

This was revealed in a recent study by Kueski , the Mexican buy now, pay later (BNPL) platform, which analyzed trends during the last sales season, from May 26 to June 3, 2025.

Among the key findings, he highlighted that 85 % of users would not have completed their purchase without the option to pay in fortnights , underscoring the growing importance of accessible, frictionless financing schemes.

“People are no longer just thinking about what they want to buy, but also how to do so intelligently and in line with their personal finances,” said Samantha García, Vice President of Marketing at Kueski .

The report, based on a survey of more than 5,200 users , shows that 90% compared prices online before purchasing , confirming that Mexican consumers are increasingly informed and plan their purchases more strategically.

In this context, the choice of payment method became crucial, and 70% of Kueski Pay users chose the platform precisely because of the option to pay in fortnights. Another determining factor was trust .

Regarding the most popular categories, electronics and technology (27%) , fashion and accessories (23%) and beauty and personal care (18%) stood out , which suggests that consumers are prioritizing value purchases and personal investment.

Beyond the numbers, this behavior is part of a broader transformation in the region: millions of people are migrating from traditional financial models to more flexible, digital, and inclusive solutions.

Financial inclusion in Mexico is no longer a distant goal, but rather a daily practice that often begins with a well-planned purchase.
