The increase in the purchase of domestic and foreign products resulted in a 0.6% increase in private consumption in Mexico during August 2025 compared to last July, according to the Monthly Indicator of Private Consumption (IMCP) , prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), which was released this Wednesday .

This increase marked the fourth monthly advance of the IMCP so far this year and also reflected the positive evolution of household spending on goods and services , despite the country’s economic volatility.

In the reference month, the indicator stood at 112.1 points . In its year-on-year comparison, private consumption increased by 0.9% in the eighth month of 2025.

Measuring private consumption is important because it represents the spending by Mexican families on the purchase of goods and services, making it a key indicator of the economy.

According to seasonally adjusted figures and monthly rates, consumption of domestically produced goods and services increased by 0.8 percent .
In its annual measurement, spending on domestic goods and services grew 0.3% and spending on imported goods advanced 4.4 percent.

After a setback last June, Mexican consumer confidence saw a slight recovery in July 2025, amid a new economic outlook stemming from uncertainty over global tariffs.

According to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , the Consumer Confidence Indicator (ICC) reached 45.9 points in the seventh month of the year, which represented a monthly growth of 0.4 points .

In its annual comparison and with seasonally adjusted figures, the ICC registered a drop of 1.2 units last July.

Within this framework, and with seasonally adjusted figures, monthly increases were observed in the components that assess the household’s current economic situation, the country’s current economic situation, and the current ability of household members to purchase durable goods. In contrast, the indicators that capture the household’s expected economic situation and the country’s future situation declined.

In the seventh month of the year, the component that measures household members’ current affordability, compared to a year ago, to purchase furniture, televisions, washing machines, and other items , saw the greatest increase, with a monthly increase of 2.5 points.

This was followed by the country’s current economic situation compared to 12 months ago , as well as the current economic situation of household members compared to 12 months ago , each with an increase of 0.1 units.

In the reference period, the component that registered the greatest decline was the country’s expected economic situation in 12 months, compared to the current one , with a decrease of 0.3 points.

The expected economic situation of household members in 12 months, compared to the current situation , registered a decrease of 0.2 units.

The CPI figures come in a context in which inflation is beginning to decline. In the first half of July alone, the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) stood at 3.55% in its annual measurement, after having trended upward in the first months of 2025.

The drop in inflation is one of the factors that has influenced the improvement in the purchasing power of Mexican consumers.

Inflation in Mexico , which continues to rise and reached 4.51% in the first half of June compared to the previous year, has caused, along with factors such as the United States’ tariff policy, a deterioration in families’ perceptions of their economic situation.

In this context, the Consumer Confidence Indicator (ICC) reached 45.4 points in the sixth month of the year, which represented a decrease of 1.1 points per month , according to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) .

During June 2025, the component that measures household members’ current affordability to purchase furniture, televisions, washing machines, and other items decreased by 2.6 points per month compared to a year ago.

Meanwhile, the country’s economic situation today, compared to 12 months ago, decreased by 1.2 points monthly.
The current economic situation of household members, compared to 12 months ago, decreased by 0.3 units monthly.

On the other hand, the item that captures expectations about the economic situation of household members in 12 months compared to the current situation was the only one that reported a monthly increase, with a rise of 0.2 points .

The country’s economic outlook is not encouraging . Along these lines, the financial institution Banamex estimated that general inflation could close the year at 4% and forecasts zero growth for 2025. Therefore, “it is possible that the economic stagnation will extend,” which would lead to a decline in consumption, one of Mexico’s economic drivers.

Figures released Friday show that consumer confidence fell again in the third month of this year, marking a five-month decline , reflecting a decline in households’ overall perception of their economic situation and that of the country.

The Inegi report also indicated that, in its annual comparison and with seasonally adjusted figures, the ICC registered an annual drop of 1.3 units .

“Within the framework, monthly decreases were observed in the components that capture the expected economic situation of household members, as well as in those corresponding to the country’s current and future economic situation.
In March 2025, the component that measures the current economic situation of household members compared to 12 months ago decreased by 1.3 pointscompared to the third month of 2024.

Meanwhile, the expected economic situation of household members in 12 months, compared to the current situation, decreased by 1.8 points annually. The country’s economic situation today, compared to 12 months ago, fell by 2 points annually during March of this year.

Regarding household members’ current purchasing possibilities for furniture, televisions, washing machines, and other household appliances, compared to a year ago, the figure remained unchanged from the third month of last year.
