“Customers are usually the ones who seek out or want to ensure they have some of these devices or security features in their vehicles. However, I think the missing piece in the industry now is the full utilization of all the data and all the technology,” he commented.

In an interview with T21, Alpízar explained that the brand’s strategy is focused on strengthening its connectivity and security ecosystem, as well as using technology to contribute to the efficiency of its customers’ operations.

Itzel Alpízar, Business Intelligence & Connectivity Strategy Manager at Daimler Truck México.

Among the available tools, he mentioned Detroit Assurance and Freightliner Link 3.0 , which work together to generate safety protocols with a preventative approach. Through artificial intelligence (AI), it is possible to process different stimuli from both the environment and the vehicle itself to detect alerts that require action.

The goal, he explained, is to act before an accident occurs or, when an incident has already happened, to activate protocols that help protect the vehicle, the cargo, and the driver. In terms of road safety, the tools also aim to anticipate risk factors such as fatigue.

Training, a gap to close

However, technology requires the participation of those behind the wheel. Alpízar identified the training and awareness of drivers as one of the main gaps in taking advantage of available solutions.

He explained that the company works with its clients on training to facilitate familiarization with these technologies, as there are still cases in which operators obstruct the cameras or show resistance to using them.

“When we show them these videos or best practices with other clients that have helped us prevent accidents or prevent theft, their thinking and adoption change quite a bit,” he said.

The second challenge lies in the data . The platforms generate large volumes of information that need to be translated into decisions and preventative actions.

As an example, he pointed out that if a road is identified where, on a certain incline, vehicles tend to exceed their speed excessively, parameters and other actions can be established to help prevent risks. Customizing platforms, devices, and alerts also allows solutions to be tailored to each client’s needs.

The relationship between carriers and these tools has also changed. According to Alpízar, initially it was the responsibility of the supplier companies to approach clients and demonstrate the need to incorporate technology; now, it is the carriers themselves who seek out security devices and solutions.

However, he considered that the next step for the industry will be to take full advantage of the information generated by these technologies , so that the data can be translated into specific measures for each operation.

More tracking capabilities

Looking ahead to the evolution of these solutions, the company is working on incorporating additional tracking sensors , with the intention of facilitating the monitoring of different components of the operation, even when there are changes in boxes or goods.

It also seeks to strengthen tools focused on operator performance. Alpízar explained that they already have Driver Coach , which provides operators with suggestions to improve their performance, while they work on strengthening a scoring system that allows clients to identify best practices and replicate them among their other operators.

Given what he described as a challenging macroeconomic environment, the strategy will be to stay close to customers and complement the units with solutions that allow them to make better use of their assets.

“What we are looking for is to be very close to our customers and be able to offer them these kinds of differentiators that help them to take full advantage not only of the unit, but also of the range of solutions we have to support them in this situation,” he pointed out.

The Danish firm DSV is redefining the global logistics landscape and positioning Mexico as one of its strategic markets . As the company accelerates its expansion plans and seeks to strengthen air connectivity with the United States, it faces a challenge it considers crucial: the security of cargo transport and capacity directly to and from Mexico.

The growth of Mexico’s airport infrastructure, especially at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) , has opened new opportunities for the industry. However, the risks of cargo theft during ground transportation continue to be a concern, notes Mikkel Hendriksen, Air Manager at DSV.

“We can’t eliminate the risk, but we can reduce it in several processes. The market in Mexico is developing at AIFA. We have to improve security in various parts of the logistics chain, not only to protect the cargo, but also the people involved,” he stated in an interview with T21.

Therefore, the company has implemented security protocols for the past two years to reduce the risk of theft in the vicinity of AIFA and on other routes. However, it believes there are still areas for improvement in strengthening the protection of its logistics chains.

“The airport has the infrastructure, capacity, and space to grow. We’ve brought clients here to see the facilities, and they’ve been pleasantly surprised. What doesn’t work is when we take certain goods out on the highway,” he points out.

The company’s vision is to maintain its pioneering leadership in the country. The first Freightliner electric vehicles are already on the market and have generated “successful experiences” among customers who have tested them, reinforcing the company’s commitment to cleaner and more efficient mobility, Alpízar noted.

The process wasn’t without its obstacles. Adopting a new technology can be daunting and disrupt the processes surrounding it.

For Freightliner, the challenge has been to break the barrier of resistance to change , which they have addressed through closeness and support with customers.

With seven years of experience with the company, Itzel defines Freightliner with the word “technology .” For her, this term epitomizes the identity of a company that always strives to be at the forefront in Mexico.

With the aim of taking advantage of the logistics node of the Bajío , the Puerta Logística del Bajío hub, in Celaya, Guanajuato, is presented as a strategic center for industrial and logistics development , whose competitive advantage lies in its direct international rail and highway connection , complemented by access to the main seaports of Mexico.

Within the framework of the signing of the agreement for the economic development hub for the well-being of Celaya, La Puerta Logística del Bajío, which was attended by state and federal government officials, among others, the logistical focus of this facility was highlighted.

At the event, it was highlighted that this hub will provide specialized solutions to key sectors such as automotive, agroindustry, manufacturing, logistics, and packaging. It will also optimize costs, time, and logistics processes, attracting investment, creating jobs, and strengthening regional competitiveness.

“This development hub is the only one of the 15 that aims to enhance a unique location from a logistical standpoint,” said Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Economy .

The federal official indicated that this hub has an important communications network “and is the most important logistics center of all the development centers today.”

The hub covers an area of 52.41 hectares with 97,500 square meters (m²) of construction and 12 kilometers (km) of internal railway tracks.

In addition, it has road connectivity, a direct link to the national railway network and federal highways 45 and 57 (Querétaro–Celaya, Celaya–Salamanca, Celaya–Irapuato), as well as by rail with the strategic crossing of Ferromex and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) , through which 23% of the national rail cargo transits.

The hub seeks to take advantage of the Bajío region and particularly the Celaya area, which is home to one of Mexico’s most dynamic industrial networks. Within a 100-km radius are assembly plants, auto parts manufacturers , appliance companies, steel and metalworking industries, and logistics operators .

“The existence of this industrial network consolidates Celaya as a strategic point for the integration of supply chains, the provision of inputs, and the development of new investments linked to the Bajío Logistics Gateway,” the statement said.

The project includes the transformation of all areas of the terminal building: the outpatient area, the documentation area, security checkpoints, the arrivals hall, and the final waiting room.

“With these initiatives, passenger reception capacity at arrivals will increase fivefold, while the waiting room will increase its capacity almost sevenfold, allowing us to more efficiently meet visitor demand. This industrial park covers 342 hectares and is the first of 15 Economic Development Hubs for Well-being promoted by the federal government.
