“Transportation is the thermometer of the country, an indicator of major changes.” For Enrique González, every word counts. He speaks not from theory, but from more than three decades of experience in the trucking sector, listening to clients, leading chambers, and participating in decisions that shape the sector’s direction.

He has experienced the trucking industry from the inside: understanding its challenges, leading its transformation, and always committed to its professionalization.

Originally from León, Guanajuato, he began his career at a very young age. He was just 17 years old when he began his first steps in the professional world, first in banking, transportation, and teaching.

“With my savings, I bought my first truck from a family business,” he told T21 with the calmness that reflects the transparency of his words.

Between 1988 and 1992, he taught at the Universidad Iberoamericana in León, covering subjects such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial planning, and currency and banking. Later, his career would lead him to transportation, a sector that inspired his passion.

In 1991, he and his brothers founded Express MG . They started in León, when not all roads were built and many deliveries required more ingenuity than infrastructure.

“When we first arrived, for example, one of the bridges in Ciudad del Carmen didn’t yet exist. Even so, the roads were still being built,” he explained.

The learning process was constant, and the environment was ever-changing. “One thing I like about transportation is that it’s constantly moving, constantly evolving,” he said.

That’s why, from his earliest years, Enrique understood that he had to adapt and become more professional to stay relevant.

But he didn’t stop there. The need to understand the sector as a whole led him to become involved with the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) in 2009 as a delegate in León, and later as vice president (2013-2018) and national president from 2018 to 2021.

“I said I was going to be a delegate for a year… actually, until 2021, when my term ended,” he commented.

He also served as vice president of the Confederation of Industrial Chambers ( Concamin) and chaired the Finance Commission, where he strengthened his ties with transportation users and reaffirmed an idea he’s heard time and again: the trucking sector inspires admiration when it demonstrates it can continue to professionalize, modernize, and achieve global quality standards. That consistency, he said, inspires confidence.

For Enrique González, being a truck driver isn’t just about having trucks. “A big company isn’t one that has one truck. A big company is one that’s organized and has a vision for growth,” he explained.

Since October 2017, Enrique has also led the Guanajuato Logistics and Mobility Cluster (CLYMGTO) , a platform that brings together freight transport companies, shipowners, distributors, customs brokers, insurers, and consultants.

“Here, unlike a national chamber, what we seek is to strengthen and optimize as a sector,” he explained.

From this perspective, with his eyes on the future of the industry, he found in education a tangible way to transform the sector.

In collaboration with the Universidad Iberoamericana, the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) , the Ministry of Economic Development , and international organizations, he promoted the creation of diploma programs aimed at executives, business owners, and decision-makers in the trucking industry. He summarizes it clearly:

“And what are we going to achieve? Now, it’s true, because either the owners of the company graduate, or the children of the owners graduate, or their executives graduate ,” he emphasized, making clear the importance of professionalizing the trucking industry.

The sessions combine theory, company visits, and practical methodologies, guided by higher education instructors. “Many people told me what a great class it was ,” he said, proud to see how the participants not only learned but also engaged.

This training effort not only seeks to improve individual training but also opens doors to the entire sector: the diplomas have curricular value and have begun to be considered for certification processes, audits, and even access to new clients.

He speaks of the Bajío region as an interconnected region, where states share auto parts, agricultural products, and talent. That’s why he emphasizes the importance of working in a coordinated manner: “We have to work in a highly organized way with all the logistical players to be efficient ,” he asserted.

And if there’s one thing he’s learned over the years, it’s that transportation has never stopped changing. He explained that the COVID-19 pandemic marked a turning point. Last-mile delivery, consolidated logistics, and digitalization became part of everyday life.

“Transportation never disappears. It just changes,” González emphasized.

Despite his busy schedule, Enrique González doesn’t neglect his personal life. “We live in León, we eat at home every day,” he said matter-of-factly, expressing the importance of quality time with his family.

He has three children and a partner who shares his passion for travel. Although each of them took their own path, all of them, in some way, ended up connected to transportation.

“I never forced any of my children to go into transportation,” he emphasized. But the example ultimately set the course.

During his presidency at Canacar , he was recognized among the 100 most influential leaders in the sector by T21, as well as receiving various recognitions from companies and chambers .

However, what Enrique values most isn’t the titles or the accolades, but the bonds he’s built along the way. For him, having lifelong friends is what truly brings him satisfaction.

And while he speaks with the calm voice of someone who has come a long way, he never stops looking ahead. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he says it bluntly: “I hope to be remembered for being consistent between what I do and what I say . “

A phrase that sums up his personality: direct, committed, and, above all, present.

And if he had to sum it up in one word, he would have no doubt: “Passionate . ”

Throughout the interview, that passion shines through in every answer. Enrique González doesn’t sell himself as a perfect leader. He talks about mistakes, lessons learned, alliances, and setbacks with the calm of someone who has been through the good times and bad in the sector. Someone who not only knows where transportation is going, but also why it can never stop.

Given the economic uncertainty that marks 2025, the Mexican trucking sector is facing a turning point . The threat of a global slowdown, the volatility of trade relations, and the effects of U.S. protectionism are all factors shaping a complex scenario. But at the same time, this storm can act as a natural filter to eliminate bad practices among both carriers and logistics service users.

There are actors in the sector who warn that more than a visible economic contraction, what we are experiencing is widespread misinformation, as stated by Carlos Canseco, director of the Querétaro Logistics Innovation Cluster (CILQRO).

“There’s talk of a recession, but the numbers don’t reflect it yet. The vehicle fleet is still moving, automakers are requesting service, and operations continue,” Canseco says.

However, he acknowledges that there are tangible impacts, such as pressure from Chinese brands in the automotive sector and the return of Mexican operators from the United States, which could lead to improved local practices and standards.

This slowdown scenario requires professionalizing the sector, according to Enrique González, president of the Guanajuato Logistics and Mobility Cluster (CLYMGTO) .

“We’re training entrepreneurs in finance, communication, the circular economy, and corporate governance. Transportation doesn’t disappear; it transforms. And those who don’t evolve will be left out of the market,” he says.

The Guanajuato Logistics and Mobility Cluster (CLYMGTO) is advancing a strategy focused on the professionalization of the transportation sector and the development of key infrastructure to improve its operations.

More than 250 companies participated in the training processes promoted last year as part of the Guanajuato logistics cluster’s strategy to professionalize the transportation sector and raise the operational level of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), according to Enrique González , president of CLYMGTO.

The programs have included modules on the circular economy, family businesses, corporate governance, and strategic planning, in a coordinated effort with the Universidad Iberoamericana and the Instituto Estatal de Capacitación (IECA) , with whom an agreement has been in place since 2011, González explained.

He explained that the courses combine in-person and virtual sessions, as well as company visits. Seventeen companies participated in the most recent module , and up to 20 are expected to participate in the next one, with the possibility of dividing into two groups due to space constraints.

In addition to executive training, the cluster works on operator training through a tripartite model: the state government provides scholarships, employers make contributions, and commit to hiring graduates. Internships are currently held at Bicentennial Park, but a shunting strip and dormitories are planned for Silao, with a statewide reach.

In terms of infrastructure, the plan is also to reactivate a regional logistics center outside of urban areas, including communal courtyards, rest areas, and services for carriers. The model was inspired by a visit to Zaragoza, Spain.

Finally, the plan is to promote the installation of a cargo airport in Guanajuato, given the congestion in Querétaro and Guadalajara. It also aims to expand collaboration with universities and include topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) for entrepreneurs in the sector.

LLeón, GTO. – The 2024 Transportation Logistics Forum held in León, Guanajuato provided key perspectives for strengthening the logistics infrastructure in Mexico . During the event, transportation and logistics leaders highlighted the need to renew the infrastructure and professionalize the sector to take advantage of the opportunities of nearshoring .

In this regard, they commented that the relocation of companies promises to position Bajío as a pillar of the global supply chain.

This forum, organized by the Guanajuato Logistics and Mobility Cluster (CLYMGTO) , with the support of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) and the National Chamber of Passenger and Tourism Transportation (Canapat), brought together various business chambers, transportation sector organizations, and local and national authorities.

During the inauguration, Enrique González, president of CLYMGTO, highlighted the urgency of establishing an air hub in Guanajuato . He pointed out that the absence of this infrastructure has generated greater saturation on the region’s roads, since much of the cargo is diverted to the airports of Querétaro and Guadalajara.

He also highlighted that Guanajuato remains the fifth largest economy in Mexico and presents this need that prevents the strengthening of competitiveness in logistics and mobility at a national level.

For his part, Ismael Plascencia, president of the Confederation of Industrial Chambers (Concamin) Bajío, inaugurated the forum by recognizing the efforts of the entrepreneurs who drive economic growth in Bajío, and reiterated the commitment to improve mobility.

“We are committed to improving the conditions of movement not only of people, but also of goods and merchandise. We have implemented various works that seek to ensure an efficient and safe mobility system in the region,” said Plascencia.

He also acknowledged the importance of having a robust infrastructure to face the logistical challenges that come with increased investment in the region.

One of the central themes was multimodal logistics and how cooperation between the public and private sectors is crucial for Mexico to improve its global competitiveness.

In this regard, Miguel Ángel Martínez Millán, president of Canacar, highlighted the importance of motor transport in the Mexican economy.

“Our industry moves 565 million tons annually and contributes 3.8% of the national GDP, generating more than six million direct and indirect jobs,” said Martínez Millán.

However, he acknowledged that there are still areas of opportunity that the sector must work on to keep up with new trends, especially in relation to international trade.

Another of the most discussed aspects was the role of Bajío in promoting nearshoring . According to data presented at the forum, states such as Guanajuato, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Aguascalientes are in a strategic geographic position to attract investments in the automotive, agri-food and manufacturing industries.

In this regard, Enrique González indicated that 22% of foreign investment derived from nearshoring is expected to reach this region .

“For more than 30 years, companies in the automotive and manufacturing industries have established their operations in the center of the country. Today we need to continue working on the professionalization of the sector, relying on tools such as artificial intelligence, telemetry and big data to meet the needs of our sector,” added González,

He explained that companies must adapt to these technologies to maintain their competitiveness.

In addition, the presentations also highlighted the promotion of clean technologies in transport to reduce environmental impact.

“We must integrate mobility strategies that minimize environmental impact, implementing clean technology in public transport and promoting non-motorized options,” said Ismael Plascencia.

Cruz Isaac Muñoz, Director General of Road and Facility Safety, also highlighted the security challenges in maritime, air, automotive and rail mobility.

The 2024 Transport Logistics Forum laid the groundwork for a future of greater collaboration and development in the Bajío. Sector specialists agreed that professionalization, investment in infrastructure and sustainability are key to taking advantage of nearshoring and consolidating Mexico’s competitiveness on the global stage.

The Logistics and Mobility Cluster of the State of Guanajuato (CLYMGTO) advances in professionalization projects in the cargo transportation and logistics sector. During a recent meeting, members of the organization exchanged dialogues with various educational institutions to train companies located in Guanajuato, and outlined the work agenda for the coming months.

In an interview for T21, Enrique González, president of CLYMGTO, explained that with the aim of training companies in a better way, the cluster has encouraged collaboration with the Universidad Iberoamericana , an institution that prepared a course focused on family protocols and corporate governance. .

“In Mexico many of the companies are family-owned and it is sad that sometimes in the second or third generation they can begin to disappear. In response to this fact, the Ibero-American University teaches a six-month course with in-person and virtual classes to companies in the region, with the aim of guiding them in the transition,” the businessman explained.

Likewise, the Institute of Technology and Higher Studies of Monterrey , through its CIEN Technology Park, offers training so that transportation continues to become more professional. “We have to continue working hard on processes and strategic planning, this educational institution provides basic training (FoBa) to companies, the interests of growth as a company are shared, policies and procedures are also established, but analyzes of these are also carried out. topics. In short, they provide support to companies on how to establish processes,” González shared.

Likewise, the CLYMGTO received a visit from members of the State Training Institute of the State of Guanajuato (IECA Guanajuato) , which is one of the most prominent driver training centers. González said that to date the educational center has trained more than 600 drivers. This becomes relevant since some freight trucking companies have already replicated the institute’s educational model, which is contributing to the professionalization of operators .

The president of CLYMGTO also shared that the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) Bajío Region is working on the construction of a test track for the preparation of drivers. “We are also promoting the availability of dormitories at the Silao training center so that internships can be done in this location,” he indicated.

During the meeting, an agreement was also signed with the Bernardo Chávez Institute for students in careers related to logistics and transportation to do internships in motor transportation companies.

Likewise, González explained that the Guanajuato Puerto Interior 2 project will be relevant for the development of the state and the sector. “ We continue working on logistics platforms , which is nothing more than an industrial park to enhance multimodal cargo. We have made substantial progress, but we still need to work on many areas to get where we want,” he stated.

The businessman commented that the CLYMGTO meeting was attended by representatives of the Bajío International Airport with whom a synergy will be sought so that the airport becomes an important cargo distribution point.

“What we are looking for is for their services to expand and to have food grade, grain, deconsolidation chambers, among others. Our work in the coming months will be to incorporate air transport to a greater extent and take advantage of the multimodality of the state,” he explained.

Finally, González reported that this year new activities are being prepared for the Transportation Logistics Forum; He announced that the possibility of extending the event to two days is being analyzed with the aim of having a full agenda of conferences in addition to the exhibition hall.
