Mexico has started construction in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, on the world’s largest ultra-low carbon methanol plant , with an investment exceeding 3.3 billion dollars (USD) , with which the country seeks to position itself as a global benchmark in the production of low-emission methanol, and as a strategic player in the new low-carbon chemical industry.

The Pacífico Mexinol project , by the Transition Industries group , represents one of the most significant industrial investments in the country’s recent history, the Ministry of Economy (SE) reported in a statement, indicating that the plant also has the participation of international institutional investors and multilateral organizations, reflecting Mexico’s importance in the development of new production platforms in North America .

The project has the support of the Mexican government, through the SE, in collaboration with the state and municipal governments, under a model oriented towards near-zero net emissions (Net Zero), with the use of carbon capture technologies, clean energy and green hydrogen .

With operations estimated to begin in early 2030, the plant will have a production capacity of 1.8 million tons of blue methanol and 350,000 tons of green methanol per year , which will strengthen Mexico’s industrial competitiveness and its integration into global value chains.

During construction, the project will generate around six thousand jobs, as well as more than 400 permanent jobs in operation, which will also benefit regional economic development, the training of specialized talent and the strengthening of local suppliers.

“Beyond the numbers, Pacífico Mexinol will generate employment, opportunities and economic benefits for the region,” emphasized Vidal Llerenas Morales, Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce of the SE, who also highlighted that it is an initiative aligned with the Mexico Plan , which promotes more balanced growth, and an industrial policy aimed at attracting sustainable investments and strengthening value chains.

The project also includes the use of treated wastewater and has more than 200 environmental mitigation measures, and includes community development programs, inclusion and strengthening of local capacities.

On April 23, a formal ceremony was held to celebrate the start of the pre-construction phase in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, attended by international investors and executives from global companies in the energy and industrial sectors, as well as federal, local, and diplomatic officials such as Ronald Johnson, the United States Ambassador to Mexico.

Methanol is a key input for multiple industrial chains, used in the production of everyday materials, fuels, and chemicals . In its low-emission form, it becomes a relevant component for moving towards cleaner industrial and energy processes.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the chemical industry was the most dynamic in attracting new investments in 2025, totaling $700 million. These industries contribute to the development of the country’s productive and export sectors’ competitiveness.

As part of the transformation of transportation toward more sustainable solutions, Freightliner seeks to lead the adoption of clean technologies , with its focus on electrification, use of clean energy and implementation of vehicles that meet the highest emissions standards, according to Fernando Mar, Senior Manager of Strategy and Electrification at Daimler Truck Mexico .

Mar detailed the brand’s efforts to integrate solutions that respond to its customers’ diverse operational needs, adapting from last-mile to long-distance transportation.

Globally, Freightliner has implemented electric fleets in countries such as the United States and Europe, and is now working to expand this technology in the Mexican market .

In terms of sales data, according to the March 2025 report from the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , Freightliner maintains a significant share of the cargo vehicle market.

In March 2025, it sold 775 diesel-powered units at retail, representing a 26.1% market share. This figure represents a 32.6% decrease compared to March 2024, when 1,150 units were sold, representing a 38.3% market share .

In terms of wholesale sales, Freightliner reached 278 units in March 2025, representing a 12.3% market share. Compared to the same month in 2024, when sales were 1,242 units, representing a 45.3% market share , there was a 77.6% drop.

Although a decrease in sales was observed compared to last year, the company continued to meet its proposed goals and maintain its position as a leader in the heavy-duty truck market in Mexico and North America, Mar stated.

Mar emphasized that electrification isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for all operations, as each customer has different needs . In this regard, Freightliner is focused on an orderly transition that allows its customers to adopt clean technologies based on the viability of their operations.

“The future has already caught up with us,” Mar said, referring to the growth of electrification as an immediate reality. Regarding the challenges , he explained that electric vehicle infrastructure remains one of the industry’s most significant obstacles.

He also emphasized that for the transition to electrification to be successful, it is necessary to work together with governments, regulatory agencies, and other companies in the sector.

“We are committed to responsible electrification,” Mar said, emphasizing that, although the process is underway, it must be done gradually and tailored to each operation.

Freightliner continues to work on developing solutions to facilitate the transition to cleaner technologies, focusing on emissions reduction. Despite the challenges, the company remains committed to innovation and the development of sustainable products within the transportation sector.
