Lower investment, weak production, and declining employment weakened the pace of growth in Mexico’s economy during 2025, which is estimated to have expanded by only 0.5%, a figure lower than the average annual growth of the last seven years (0.7%), according to the Center for Economic Studies of the Private Sector (CEESP) .

The organization, which is part of the  Business Coordinating Council (CCE) , indicated that the drop in investment in the country reflects the decisions made by business owners in an environment of high uncertainty, stemming from issues such as insecurity and high labor costs, which mainly affected micro and small businesses.

This has led to a decrease in the number of formal businesses in Mexico . According to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) , the number of employers fell by 25,667 in 2025, and another 17,911 were lost in 2024, bringing the total number of formal employers that closed in these last two years to 43,578.

The analysis detailed that in the country there are more informal workers who do not pay direct taxes, nor do they have social security.

“An economy with these levels of informality undoubtedly becomes less productive and competitive and offers less well-being and fewer job opportunities to the population,” he stressed.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , informal workers in December 2025 totaled 33 million, while the rate of informal employment was established at 54.6%, a percentage higher than the 53.7% of the last month of 2024.

In addition to the above, the CEESP explained, there is the deterioration of the perception on issues such as the rule of law, corruption and insecurity, factors that affect the decision to invest and contribute to a slower growth rate.

According to estimates from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) , the Mexican economy could grow 1.5% this year and 2.1% in 2027 , due to global trade and geopolitical tensions, which will continue to affect various financial markets around the world.

Regarding public finances, the study noted that, although the authorities’ efforts to reduce the high deficit are appreciated, the growing spending on public commitments and the increase in the level of indebtedness have limited the achievement of this objective.

“By 2026, it is anticipated that the historical balance of the public sector’s financial requirements (SHRFSP), which is the largest debt item, will rise by 1.3 trillion pesos, causing its financial cost to be a similar amount, equivalent to 4.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), when in 2024 it represented only 3.4%,” he emphasized.

He considered inflationary pressure to be another problem that the Mexican economy will face this year, which started at a rapid pace.

According to Inegi, in the first half of January 2026, the  National Consumer Price Index (INPC) , which measures the variation in prices of a basket of goods and services, stood at  3.77% annually , which meant an increase of 0.31% compared to the previous half-month.

This increase was driven by a 4.47% year-on-year rise in the core price index, which excludes goods and services with more volatile prices or that do not respond to market conditions.

Given the economic challenges anticipated for this year, the CEESP believes that a better business environment should be promoted in Mexico.

“Strengthening the rule of law, reducing insecurity, and promoting a more business-friendly environment will be key factors in stimulating a faster pace of growth and well-being,” the analysis concluded.

In the face of disaster, the first things that come to the forefront are not figures or technical analyses, but basic needs: water, food, hygiene products, shelter, medical care, and security. In those critical and chaotic first hours, humanitarian logistics becomes the difference between life and death.

In Mexico, a country highly vulnerable to meteorological phenomena, this logistical approach isn’t improvised; it’s built through planning, partnerships, and experience. A clear example is the work of the National Center for Support in Epidemiological Contingencies and Disasters (CENACED) , which operates at the heart of emergencies, coordinating aid, bringing together stakeholders, and delivering resources precisely where they are most needed.

During the presentation of the 2025 results report, Cynthia Espinoza , director of CENACED, reiterated that the organization’s mission remains unchanged since its inception: to save lives, reduce human suffering, and build resilient communities . To achieve this, the organization has strengthened its multisectoral coordination model, Unidos por Ellos (United for Them) , which has become more than just an operational framework; it has become a shared identity.

This model integrates academia, governments, United Nations agencies, the private sector, and civil society organizations , enabling coordinated field operations, risk prevention, and clear and transparent accountability processes. The logic is simple yet powerful: “When each actor contributes its strengths, the humanitarian response becomes faster, more efficient, and more impactful.”

2025 was not an easy year. In June, Hurricane Erick impacted communities in Oaxaca and Guerrero, damaging homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. The response was immediate: the Unidos por Ellos (United for Them) protocol was activated, and 14 civil society organizations worked to assist 30 communities in 14 municipalities , benefiting 39,624 people through the delivery of 9.3 tons of humanitarian aid .

Months later, in October, a new emergency struck the country. Floods in Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, and Querétaro caused rivers to overflow, roads to be blocked, schools and health centers to be damaged, and hundreds of families to be temporarily displaced.

During the first critical 72 hours , CENACED reactivated its protocol, achieving immediate coordination between civil society, the private sector, and authorities.

One of the key events of this emergency was the activation of the agreement with the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) , which allowed for the channeling of aid from the private sector—in coordination with the Ministry of Economy —through CENACED’s humanitarian warehouse. The result was the mobilization of 2,560 tons of aid , an amount that, as the organization illustrated, would allow tractor-trailers loaded with aid to surround Azteca Stadium more than twice.

Beyond its scale, humanitarian logistics is measured by its effectiveness on the ground . In this emergency, the organization coordinated actions with 23 civil society organizations and, thanks to the support of partners, managed to acquire and distribute 4,310 kits containing food, hygiene, and cleaning supplies from its humanitarian warehouse.

In total, 27 shipments left the humanitarian warehouse, supported by routes donated by UPS Foundation and private sector companies, moving more than 19 million pesos in humanitarian aid.

Behind every box delivered are unseen but crucial logistical processes. In 2025, the operational capacity of CENACED’s humanitarian warehouse grew by 15% , thanks to the creation of new operational flows and a continuous improvement strategy.

The optimization included a new layout , improvements to receiving and sorting, inventory control with an internal system, new KPIs, self-audits, and more robust procedures . Under this framework, 2,945 humanitarian kits were assembled , reinforcing efficiency during periods of high operational pressure.

Humanitarian work cannot be done alone. In 2025, CENACED consolidated strategic alliances with the organization SOCPINDA , the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (Cemefi), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) , the latter through the creation of an annual revolving fund of one million dollars to guarantee immediate resources in emergencies, with a priority focus on the protection of children and adolescents.

Looking to the future, CENACED seeks to further strengthen the Unidos por Ellos network, expand its operational coverage, and consolidate its position as a national leader in disaster risk reduction and humanitarian action . Because when an emergency strikes, good intentions are not enough; what is needed is organization, processes, infrastructure, and, above all, logistics that put people first.

In a country where disasters strike without warning, humanitarian logistics becomes a bridge of hope .

Within the framework of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Singapore , business leaders and authorities from both countries inaugurated the First Mexico-Singapore Business Forum , a meeting that seeks to promote new alliances in manufacturing, technology, logistics, innovation and sustainable development .

Francisco Cervantes,  president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) , emphasized that the meeting comes at a key moment for trade diversification. He noted that Singapore has become Mexico’s second-largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, with annual trade reaching nearly four billion dollars .

“Mexico is a country fully integrated into global trade and a natural partner for Singapore. The quality of Mexican labor, our cultural richness, and our connection to North America make our country an attractive destination for investment,” Cervantes stated.

He noted that the proximity to the United States, with a border of 3,156 kilometers (km) and a daily trade flow of 1,200 million dollars , opens up opportunities for joint projects that take advantage of both the North American and Asian markets.

In his speech, Sergio Contreras , executive president of the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (Comce) , presented an overview of the importance of foreign trade in Mexico , highlighting that it is the 13th largest economy in the world , in addition to ranking tenth as an exporting and importing country  , and that foreign trade represents 75% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“Exporting manufactured goods requires very strict standards. Mexico has built a robust and competitive industrial base over decades,” he emphasized.

Contreras highlighted that Singapore is a global leader in competitiveness and innovation , as well as the most important port operator in the world.

“Mexican manufacturing and Singaporean innovation are a natural combination. Together we can lead global markets,” he emphasized.

He also celebrated Singapore’s imminent appointment as the first associate member of the Pacific Alliance , a step that will expand productive integration between Asia and Latin America.

For her part, Yong Hsin Yue , vice president of the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) , said that her country’s business community sees Mexico as a strategic partner for expanding in America.

After leading a business mission in Mexico City, he highlighted that the Mexico Plan , promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, has given confidence to the Singaporean private sector by defining priority sectors and streamlining administrative processes for investment.

“This forum is more than a symbol. It’s a platform for building the future. We want to foster long-term business relationships, understand local regulations, and adapt solutions to the Mexican market,” he stated.

He also emphasized that Mexico and Singapore are natural gateways to their respective regions, Mexico to America; Singapore to Asia.

In a speech that evoked the history of the Manila Galleon and the circulation of Mexican silver through Asia 500 years ago, Tharman Shanmugaratnam , President of the Republic of Singapore, emphasized that the relationship between the two countries has deep roots that are being revived today in a new economic context .

Growth prospects for the Mexican economy are “not very encouraging” and are being complicated by the challenges of judicial reform and trade policies promoted by the United States, which has increased the perception of a weakening of Mexico’s productive activity, warned the Center for Economic Studies of the Private Sector (CEESP) .

The organization, which reports to the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) , noted that “a modest improvement in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for this year is evident, but this does not imply a significant increase in the country’s productive activity.”

“The most recent survey of private sector specialists’ expectations published by the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) shows a modest improvement in the GDP growth forecast for this year, revised from 0.08% to 0.13%. However, this does not imply a significant increase in productive activity,” he emphasized.

According to the analysis, following the increase in the  National Consumer Price Index (INPC) , specialists revised their inflation estimate upwards for the third consecutive month.

“Both the forecast for headline and core inflation this year is 4.07%, the first time it has been above Banxico’s target range of 3% +/- 1 percentage point,” he stated.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) , inflation in the first half of June 2025 stood at 4.51% at an annual rate , which has impacted the pockets of Mexicans due to an increase in the prices of goods, services and consumer products.

The study indicated that inflation expectations for 2026 and 2027 are improving slightly, with increases of 3.75% and 3.70%, respectively, expected.

Another factor that is causing concern among specialists is the perception of the economic environment , which remains in “negative territory.”

“Ninety-five percent of respondents believe the economy is currently worse than it was a year ago. 86% indicate that the business climate will remain the same or worsen over the next six months, while 73% believe the current situation is a bad time to invest,” the study stated.

Crime, lack of rule of law, and corruption are the main obstacles to doing business in Mexico, according to 67% of the experts surveyed.

CEESP emphasized that one of the current concerns in the economic environment is the policies promoted by Donald Trump , President of the United States, which “do not prioritize global cooperation in any way. The uncertainty generated by this environment could become a significant constraint on growth.”

In June, the consumer confidence indicator showed a monthly decline of 1.1 points, after having increased in May; meanwhile, in the sixth month of the year, the manufacturing industry confidence indicator saw a monthly decline of 0.2 points.

According to CEESP, these declines, among other factors, signal a weakening economy that shows no significant growth in the short term.

Along these lines, the financial institution Banamex stated that “it is possible that the economic stagnation will continue,” and predicted zero growth for the country this year.

In the session Challenges and opportunities of the new government and the potential of the chemical industry , at the LVI National Forum of the Chemical Industry , organized by the National Association of the Chemical Industry (ANIQ) , Kenneth Smith Ramos , partner of Agon Consultores , said that Mexico must be prepared because its northern neighbor would review the automotive industry and establish trade measures against China.

In light of this, he said that Mexico must strengthen its competitiveness in the region, especially if Donald Trump wins the US elections and continues with the same tone and theme as when he was president.

The chemical industry has many opportunities and could benefit from the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) , with the opening of several sectors, said Smith, who added that Mexico’s future is with its northern neighbor.

Carlos Pascual , senior vice president at Energy S&P Global , said that this should be the time for Mexico due to the level of tension between the United States and China .

“The relocation of labor in Mexico ( nearshoring ) is a vision, but not a reality, and we have to see what the capacity is to receive capital; we have to review judicial reform and the possible elimination of regulatory bodies,” he said.

Pascual said that the number one issue for Trump, if he wins the US presidency, is migration , which he would use as a transactional issue in the review of T-MEC, while Kamala Harris would bet on integration with Mexico to compete against China.

José Carlos Pons , Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Alpek , stated that the chemical industry is a contrast that depends heavily on imports and foreign markets, however, he said that there are opportunities in being close to the largest market in the world.

He outlined five priority issues to assist the federal government, which are: working as an industry with Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) , collaborating in the transition to electric energy; having the government protect them from unfair competition, infrastructure and logistics, and streamlining international trade.

Meanwhile, Regulo Salinas , president of the Energy Commission of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) , highlighted the openness to dialogue that is emerging from the new federal government , headed by Claudia Sheinbaum , with the private sector, something that, he said, did not happen with the previous administration.

He also agreed that Mexico will benefit more from being closer to North America’s trade policies than to China’s.

As of the second quarter of 2024,  the United States remains Mexico’s main investment partner , with 44% of total flows, amounting to  13,717 million dollars , according to information from the  Ministry of Economy . These figures show the commercial importance between the two countries, and highlight what was expressed by the panelists in the sense of maintaining relations with the northern neighbor in economic terms.

As a key sector in Mexico’s economy, the automotive industry offers great opportunities for the future of investments and the country.

This is a sector with a share of 4.7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while on a global scale, it ranks seventh in light vehicle production and fourth in auto parts manufacturing; in addition to having an impact on 60% of economic branches.

In this context, the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) organized the first Mexico Drive Forward Summit 2024 , a discussion in which industry representatives, authorities and actors in the value chain exchanged points of view and, above all, possible strategies that will contribute to the Mexican industry getting on the nearshoring wave and at the same time responding to the demands of the domestic market.

“The automotive industry is undergoing a historic paradigm shift, and for Mexico to continue being the major global automotive player, we must prepare ourselves. Therefore, it is crucial to discuss the current situation of the industry and its future, involving the government, the industry and all the actors in the ecosystem,” explained Odracir Barquera, general director of AMIA.

In an interview with T21, Barquera explained that the relevance of Mexico Drive Forward Summit 2024 is located in the context of the arrival of a new government in Mexico, and with it, a cabinet that will make decisions that will impact the sector.

“First of all, we must take into account that in 2023 the automotive industry had a trade balance of 108 billion dollars, which represented 30% more than what was obtained from remittances and the tourism sector together,” he said.

The AMIA CEO added that the industry worldwide is undergoing a historic transition and explained that today the paradigm is changing, because we are moving from producing and acquiring internal combustion vehicles to new technologies that are aimed at reducing emissions.

This situation represents a profound change in production processes and if Mexico wants to maintain its position as an automotive producer and exporter, it must invest in electromobility, which Barquera described as Mexico’s real long-term opportunity .

However, for this to become a reality, it is necessary to attract the necessary investments to change the production plant and build a new supply chain, said Barquera.

In this regard, Daniel Hernández, president of the National Cluster Network , stressed that in the 15 regions that host the 12 existing clusters in Mexico, changes have occurred that have contributed to the development of local supply and opened opportunities for Mexican entrepreneurs to connect with the supply chain and generate more and better jobs.

“Today we see an effect in the different regions of the country of seeing how the automakers and Tier 1 companies of the automotive industry begin to locate their engineering centers in the country, and that takes us to another level of development of competencies and capabilities; and in terms of the supply chain, the closer we are to the early engineering cycles, the more opportunities there are for suppliers to participate in the development of new products,” Hernández explained.

For his part, Francisco Cervantes, president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) , said that more than separate industries, it is necessary to see it as an automotive ecosystem in which all actors converge, with the objective of working in favor of the entire value chain, especially in the context of the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) and, of course, in favor of the environment.

Within the framework of Mexico Drive Forward Summit 2024, Graciela Márquez Colín, president of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , reaffirmed the importance of the automotive industry in the country . The Latin American dream: greater integration. The two largest economies in this region hope to increase their trade ties , a bilateral project that has been promoted in recent decades but has not made substantial progress due to the protectionist policies of both countries.

Business representatives from Brazil and Mexico met on Monday to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that seeks to promote cooperation to strengthen trade relations, establish the bases for the organization of trade missions and the development of trade promotion actions to generate new business opportunities .

The signing of this MoU took place between the Brazilian Export and Import Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (Comce) , during the Mexico-Brazil Business Forum event.

“I believe that Brazil and Mexico have not taken advantage of their full potential. We must work together on an equitable trade relationship, where everyone wins. I am convinced that we can achieve great things together, but we must sit down and talk, see what is good for Mexico and for Brazil, and act accordingly,” said Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, president of Brazil, who attended the forum.

The trade opportunity for both economies is broad, although the exchange of goods between the two largest economies in Latin America is barely 2% of their total trade. In the case of Mexico, its foreign trade is focused on its relationship with the United States and Canada, where just over 80% of products are exported, while Brazil has built a very solid trade exchange with China over the last few years.

Currently, Mexico and Brazil have signed two Economic Complementation Agreements (ACE), 53 and 55 , the latter focused on the automotive industry, for which there have been rounds of negotiations in the recent past to deepen trade opportunities without progress so far; even the most optimistic have proposed the signing of a free trade agreement.

Brazil is Mexico’s main trading partner in Latin America, as well as the leading export destination and the leading supplier of Mexican imports from the region.

Lula da Silva said he was hopeful of making progress on this project with Mexico after the change in the federal government, where the country’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum , will take office .

“We are going to have a very close relationship,” said Marcelo Ebrard, the Secretary of Economy appointed by the next federal administration, who was present at the event and stressed the political will that is currently being shown to advance closer trade relations with Brazil.

For his part, Jorge Viana, president of ApexBrasil, indicated that the agreement between both countries would be an opportunity to help trade in neighboring Latin American countries .

The Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (Comce) announced on Monday the formation of its new board during a recent assembly of associates. In a unanimous decision, Valentín Diez Morodo was named honorary president, while Sergio Contreras Pérez assumed the role of executive president.

Diez Morodo  has a long history in the presidency of Comce and various organizations both in Mexico and abroad. Likewise, Sergio Contreras has notable experience in international banking and investment and trade promotion.

In this sense and in search of continuous improvement, Valentín Diez Morodo highlighted the importance of adopting new technologies and methods to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of the organization.

“These appointments respond to a structural evolution that we are carrying out. It is not simply a change in the way we operate, but an institutional strategy designed to respond not only to the present, but to the future of the country,” added Diez Morodo,

For his part, Sergio Contreras Pérez emphasized the relevance of Comce’s link with different government agencies and the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) , whose mandate includes the promotion of foreign trade and foreign investment.

At the Foro AMDA 2024 , experts from the automotive and cargo transportation sector discussed the importance of NOM-044, the review of the T-MEC (Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada) and the economic and political situation in Mexico. They agreed that the certainty of the authorities is crucial to attract investments, create jobs and increase tax collection.

One of the most notable points was precisely NOM-044-SEMARNAT-2017, which regulates emissions from heavy vehicles . In this regard, representatives of the  Cámara Nacional del Autotransporte de Pasaje y Turismo (Canapat) , the  National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) and the  Asociación Nacional de Transporte Privado (ANTP) y la Confederación Nacional de Transportistas Mexicanos (Conatram)   pointed out the need to review the EURO 5-EPA 2007 binomials and EURO 6-EPA 2010.

According to analysts, the lack of ultra low sulfur diesel (DUBA) in the country has generated a debate on how these technologies can coexist to allow motor transport users and their investors to take advantage of their benefits, such as reduced emissions and better performance. made out of fuel.

In addition, they highlighted the importance of accelerating vehicle renewal , which will be crucial to improve logistics and urban transportation in Mexico.

Another issue of concern was the upcoming review of the T-MEC . Eduardo Solís Sánchez, member of the review committee of the  Business Coordinating Council (CCE)  , highlighted the complexity of the rule that forces assembly companies to acquire 70% of their steel in the region.

“This topic has recently gained relevance due to the Chinese steel situation and the trade conflict with the United States. It is a complex rule, however, at the end of the day there will be more integration in North America and shipowners will have to increase their level of integration to reach these percentages and be able to access free trade when they export to the United States and Canada,” he stated. Solis.

Regarding economic and political uncertainty,  Ricardo Gordillo, director of analysis at CI Banco , pointed out that there is uncertainty about the exchange rate and the credit rating derived, precisely, from the political moment that the country is experiencing.

For his part, Juan Pablo Calderón, coordinator of Institutional Relations of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) delved into the effects of presidentialism and the impact of Claudia Sheinbaum’s recent triumph , as well as the announcement of her cabinet , providing his judgment, a dose of certainty for analysts about the direction the country will take in the next six years.

In this sense, the AMDA 2024 Forum highlighted the need for clarity and certainty in the heavy vehicle automotive sector to promote economic growth and competitiveness in Mexico.

They also concluded that the review of NOM-044, the effective implementation of the T-MEC and political stability are key elements that, if managed properly, could positively transform the transportation landscape in the country.
