The agency detailed that Ferromex and Ferrosur registered decreases in freight movement of 14.27% and 16.26%, respectively; the former fell from 16.83 million tons in the same period of 2024 to 14.43 million tons in the first three months of 2025, while the latter fell from 3.67 million tons to 3.07 million tons.

Meanwhile, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico saw a 3.45% annual drop, from 13.21 million tons to 12.76 million tons during the same period.

During the aforementioned cycle, the ARTF explained that of the 31.32 million tons, 8.09 million tons , or 25.82%, corresponded to domestic traffic and 23.24 million tons (74.18%) to international traffic; of this traffic, 17.56 million tons were imported and 5.68 million tons were exported.

“Compared to the January-March 2025 period, domestic traffic decreased by 26.26%, international traffic decreased by 1.97%, imports decreased by 3.16%, and exports increased by 1.88%,” the document, “Pulse of the Railway System Operational March 2025,” stated.

Of the total tons transported during that period, 15.16 million tons were industrial products, 8.46 million were agricultural products, 4.28 million were petroleum products and their derivatives, while 1.80 million were mineral products. The remainder was forestry, inorganic, and animal derivatives, which together amounted to 1.63 million tons.

“Compared to the January-March 2024 period, the only group that showed an increase was the inorganic group,” the ARTF indicated.

The organization emphasized that Tamaulipas and Coahuila stood out among the states with the greatest participation in the movement of goods .

During the first three months of the year, rail traffic of basic goods decreased by 18.34% , from 6.99 million tons to 5.71 million tons.

From January to September of this year, the Mexican Railway System (SFM) transported 101.23 million tons, representing an increase of 2.2% compared to the same period in 2023, with Ferromex and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico leading the cargo movement.

Of the total, 29.02 million tons, or 28.6%, corresponded to national traffic and 72.21 million tons, or 71.3%, to international traffic, reported the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) .

Of the international traffic, 55.18 million tons, 76.4%, were imported and 17 million tons, 23.5%, were exported.

“Compared to the same period in January-September 2023, domestic traffic grew by 3.6%, international traffic by 1.7%, imports rose by 3%, and exports decreased by 2.4%,” the regulatory body said.

In the mentioned period, 101.2 million tons were transported in total, of which 48.5 million tons were industrial products , 28.9 million tons agricultural products, 13 million tons petroleum products and their derivatives.

While minerals accounted for 5.61 million tons and the remainder corresponds to forestry, inorganic and animal derivatives products, which together transported five million tons.

As for basic basket products, the figure rose from 18.32 million tonnes to 20.57 million tonnes, which translated into an increase of 12.29% year-on-year.
