Business growth without structured logistics planning can directly impact profitability by generating higher costs, operational uncertainty, and limitations in responsiveness. Based on this premise, Baja Ferries emphasized the importance of transitioning from reactive logistics to one designed with a strategic vision.

At  The Logistics World Summit & Expo , Sebastián Díaz Pizarro Graf, CEO of BF Connect, Baja Ferries ‘ logistics integration unit , explained that disorderly expansion, although responding to the natural objective of growing, producing more and gaining market share, can cause bottlenecks when suppliers, transportation and operational capabilities are not aligned.

In that context, he stated that many companies face scenarios where demand exceeds available capacity, because supply or distribution needs were not anticipated .

In Mexico, road transport accounts for approximately 80% of freight movement, increasing dependence on a single mode of transportation and exposing supply chains to risks from infrastructure disruptions or external events. Furthermore, logistics costs can represent between 12% and 15% of the product’s value , directly impacting its competitiveness.

Given this scenario, logistics design emerges as a key element . This involves diversifying modes of transport—such as rail, sea, or air—integrating capabilities, and strengthening the resilience of the supply chain. Furthermore, the need to develop suppliers proactively, even before operational saturation occurs, was emphasized, according to Díaz.

From a logistics integration perspective, it was emphasized that companies do not necessarily have to concentrate all their capabilities in a single internal department, but rather rely on specialized partners to ensure availability and efficiency in service.

“Logistics is not just an operational problem, it is a problem of design, architecture and planning,” Díaz emphasized.

In this sense, the group has evolved towards a model that integrates different services , from maritime transport with ferries and multipurpose vessels, to rail solutions and door-to-door coordination, with the aim of offering comprehensive logistics coverage.

Díaz pointed out that given the market’s needs, operations are continuing, but designing the logistics allows for sustainable growth .

Thus, anticipation, diversification, and planning emerge as the pillars for facing an increasingly complex and demanding environment in the sector.

Baja Ferries , a Mexican maritime transport and logistics company, presented the Cabo Star , its new flagship in the port of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, which will strengthen connectivity on the Mazatlán-La Paz route .

With capacity for 400 passengers and more than three linear meters of cargo, the Cabo Star is positioned as the largest and most modern ferry of its kind in Latin America.

The ship features 70 cabins, 24 sleeper capsules, a restaurant, recreational areas, a VIP lounge, pet-friendly spaces , an outdoor bar, and onboard internet , offering a comprehensive travel experience that makes the journey part of the destination.

“With this ship, the experience of those who embark to or from Mazatlán is elevated, making the ferry not just a journey, but a part of this great destination. We know that Mazatlán has built a vibrant identity as a tourist destination that relies on quality, experience, and the warmth of its people,” said Nino Liaño, CEO of Baja Ferries.

The presentation ceremony took place aboard the ship and brought together authorities from all three levels of government, including the head of the Sinaloa Tourism Secretariat , Mireya Sosa Osuna; the Chief of Staff of the Fourth Naval Region, Vice Admiral Alberto Meléndez; and the Director General of the National Port System Administration (Asipona) in Mazatlán , Rear Admiral Mariel Aquileo Ancona Infanzón, among others.

Mireya Sosa celebrated the arrival of Cabo Star as a strategic investment that strengthens Mazatlán’s competitiveness .

“We recognize Baja Ferries because this historic investment reflects not only its capacity and innovation, but also its commitment to the sustainability and economic and social development of the region,” he said.

The presentation of the Cabo Star vessel included a guided tour of its facilities for attendees. Last July, the company officially launched the Cabo Star, an investment exceeding 1.5 billion pesos .

For Baja Ferries, it is clear that the company’s core business , which is based on the ferry that connects La Paz with the ports of Topolobampo and Mazatlán , both in Sinaloa, must continue to be promoted ; there are strategic areas for development.

“We must accelerate our three main avenues: our core business of ferries, with innovation, capacity, and experience; to which we must add comprehensive logistics services, where the launch of BF Connect is key; and, as a third avenue, short-sea shipping,” said Nino Liaño.

For logistics operators like BF Connect , the goal is to meet the needs of each load and customer by offering the most efficient solution , and to do so, all transportation and supply chain design options must be explored , explained Nino Liaño.

According to the executive, 90% of the services offered by BF Connect are currently outside of ferry operations, “and on the contrary, we are finding opportunities as an IMC (Intermodal Marketing Company) , that is, an integrator of intermodal services,” Liaño Egozcue noted.

Adding to this dynamic is the offer of cabotage and short sea shipping services, through which they offer containerized and general cargo services to serve the ports of Guaymas, Mazatlán, Manzanillo, and Lázaro Cárdenas in Mexico , as well as various locations in Central America.

“In March 2024, we had one vessel focused on these types of services, and today we have five vessels serving our customers’ needs, and we’re exploring even more opportunities,” the executive explained.

Baja Ferries is focusing on a One-Stop-Shop concept , where customers can find all the solutions for comprehensive logistics.

To strengthen its service, Nino Liaño announced that it is in the process of launching its freight forwarding offering to meet the needs of clients with a more global focus, where Baja Ferries, with this structure, can be more strategic in its objectives.

This vessel will be able to offer a certified service, as it is a vessel with similar characteristics to the California Star, which operates on the La Paz–Topolobampo route. 

“We invested in cutting-edge technology to have a vessel that fulfills our value proposition of safety, schedule compliance, and quality of service,” said Nino Liaño Egozcue, general director of Baja Ferries. 

The 1.5 billion peso investment in the Cabo Star, which has a capacity of three thousand linear meters , represents a 20% increase compared to what was available at the México Star, which ceased operations this week on the La Paz–Mazatlán route. 

During the flagging ceremony of the Cabo Star, Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Castro Cosío stated that this vessel will be the largest in the state and in Latin America, “representing the mobility of more than 250,000 people annually and more than 200,000 vehicles, which represents a boost to the development of the state and its population.” 

Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Javier Mendoza Rosales, Deputy Director General of Liaison, Implementation, Management, Accidents and Maritime Casualties of the Captaincies and Maritime Affairs Unit (Unicapam), highlighted that the arrival of this vessel will allow for a vision of a more connected, competitive, sustainable and sustainable Mexico , “boosting maritime and merchant marine development.” 

Nino Liaño emphasized that the Cabo Star flies the Mexican flag and has a 100% Mexican crew, a result of the development of the marina they identify with at Baja Ferries. 

“Our approach is about service, not history, which is why we made investments in the Cabo Star aimed at improving the passenger experience,” said Nino Liaño, adding that to serve the 400 passengers, there are various options available, including the main lounge, the VIP lounge, four-passenger cabins with the option of expanding to a family area for eight, and the Star Suite. 

“On this ship, we’re incorporating capsules for passengers or trucking operators who require a more comfortable space than lounges, but with the advantage of a type of isolation. We’re innovating with this solution,” said the CEO of Baja Ferries. 

Another effect Baja Ferries will have with the incorporation of the Cabo Star will be to advance its commitment to reducing emissions , which was set to decrease by 70% by 2030. By 2025, with this new vessel, this commitment set in 2018 will be met. “With the Cabo Star, emissions will be reduced by 20% compared to those generated by the México Star,” he added.

Throughout its 23-year history, Baja Ferries has maintained a dynamic of modernizing its fleet that has led it to replace its vessels in an average of 18 months , as Nino Liaño , the company’s general director, stated to T21 before the end of 2024 .

A new ship will begin service in mid-July , thus maintaining its dynamic approach of renewing its vessels every 18 months. This ship will replace the Mexico Star, which will no longer be part of its fleet. This will allow it to increase its capacity on the Mazatlán–Pichilingue (La Paz) route .

“It’s a ship that boasts cutting-edge technology. We’ve invested in the technical side to maintain our value proposition, which is based on safety, schedule adherence, and service,” Nino Liaño told T21.

According to the executive, the incorporation of this vessel will allow them to continue supporting their business logic in three pillars .

“First, it will give us the opportunity to continue supplying Baja California with an incremental capacity of 1,000 more units per month, which is 12 linear kilometers to supply,” Liaño explained.

Secondly, by incorporating a new, efficient vessel , “it aligns with our value proposition of reducing emissions. We are making progress in generating 65% fewer emissions based on our 2017 record, and our goal is to reach 70% by 2030,” he stated.

It will also strengthen Baja Ferries’ tourism offering , both for passengers and operators.

With this vessel, which is a sister ship to the California Star that provides services between Topolobampo and Pichilingue, Baja Ferries will be able to standardize its value proposition on both routes , with differentiated services. In the case of Mazatlán, the route is covered in 13 hours, while in Topolobampo it is done in eight hours.

Based on what Nino Liaño described, the arrival of the new vessel will strengthen its service offering, which begins with boarding at the port of origin and will serve to boost connectivity with Baja California Sur.

Regarding cargo capacity, Nino Liaño anticipated that it will evolve according to market needs, for which the new customer experience area will allow for increased service levels, such as boarding and disembarking, which will be improved by 70% compared to the time required on the previous vessel, the Mexico Star.

Mazatlán Maritime Terminal (TMAZ) has joined the intermodal service offered by Ferromex and Baja Ferries that serves the logistics supply market for Baja California Sur , in the northwest of Mexico, a state with just under one million inhabitants, but which has one of the most attractive tourist centers in the country that demands a large volume of merchandise and supplies.

Hoshi Jurado, Deputy Director of Intermodal Sales at Ferromex, a company that is part of Grupo México Transportes (GMXT) , explains to T21 that this is an integrated domestic service that has been provided for just over eight years with the participation of Baja Ferries, in which merchandise is transported by train from various points in the country to Topolobambo, in Sinaloa, where it is embarked to cross the Sea of ​​Cortez and arrive at the port of Pichilingue to begin its final land distribution in different cities in the entity.

“This service adds a stop, which is Mazatlán, and that is where TMAZ enters, so we have a new route,” confirmed Jurado in an interview, who also explained that this service takes advantage of two essential factors: the first is that Baja Ferries has the Mazatlán-La Paz route with several frequencies, while TMAZ takes advantage of the assembly area where the presence (inspection) of customs authorities is not necessary, which generates a free flow of goods.

This intermodal service begins in locations such as Mexico City (Pantaco railway terminal), Monterrey, Hermosillo, Silao or Guadalajara, heading towards Mazatlán, where TMAZ has made investments in equipment to expedite the transfer (loading and unloading) of merchandise , whether for full containers (outbound) or empty containers (return).
