Trade between Mexico and the United States increased by 3.3% in the period from January to September 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This increase was driven by a 5.5% rise in Mexican exports to the United States, while exports to Mexico increased by 0.1% during the same period, according to data from the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) .

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) , Mexico’s economy will grow by 1.5% by 2026 compared to 2025, while the United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will advance by 2.1%, based on the same multilateral organization.

In this context, the prospects for growth in trade between Mexico and the United States will advance in a moderate scenario at 6%, however, it could increase to a double-digit level, derived from market conditions that can vary dynamically , considered Calvin Rackley, regional vice president of Operations at Averitt .

From Rackley’s perspective, Averitt has developed a business network and infrastructure capable of supporting the growth dynamics of its clients, and thereby capitalizing on market growth.

As part of the strategy, the expansion of its distribution & fulfillment center in San Antonio, Texas was inaugurated , which allows for the management of cargo coming from the Texas-Mexico border, and helps to decongest trade through the port of Laredo, with a future vision for the growth of activity between both countries.

The San Antonio distribution center has 85,000 square feet (7,896 m2) and 80 loading docks for distribution and fulfillment activities, offering logistics close to the border and what happens in Mexico.

In addition to the above, Averitt has expanded its portfolio to include dry goods handling, warehousing, and other services. “Besides San Antonio, we have added locations in Laredo, Austin, and Dallas, with the goal of offering better alternatives to our customers,” Rackley emphasized.

In addition to this infrastructure, expansion works are planned for the warehouses in Corpus Christi and Harlingen (Texas), which will allow for greater capacity, ” so that when customers need it they can use the capacity they require , this will improve the efficiency of their cross-border operations and guarantee a good return on investment,” Calvin Rackley stated.

Averitt has approximately 8,500 employees, including operators and associates, and its facilities total approximately four million square feet, with the capacity to serve the central and southeastern United States and its connection to the markets of Canada and Mexico.

The countdown began on February 3 with the one-month postponement of the imposition of US tariffs on Mexican products , which allowed exporters a temporary respite.

For Ángel Hernández, general manager of Super Transporte Internacional (STI) , the pressure on the sector has been on since January of this year, the demand for more transport and storage space to be able to move goods in the face of uncertainty over tariffs.

“We already noticed that exporters were beginning to want to send a little more product to the American side to avoid the risk of an increase due to sales. This was seen much more in January, because February was a strong threat,” explained Hernández.

With the postponement, the strategy continues to evolve. For Hernandez, there is still some uncertainty and the market could demand much more capacity in the export area to cover any risk.

“These issues are very sensitive, especially because it is a fact that if there is something that Donald Trump does not like, he will want to impose tariffs,” Hernández said.

He also said that exporters have sought to secure their operating margins.

Hernández warned that “there is already a lack of capacity in the warehouses in Laredo, and that is a reality. There is a lack of creativity because it is a reality. The issue of capacity could be affected.”

He also indicated that in Laredo many areas are still being developed for storage, but not everything is ready .

For his part, Edgar Zamorano, delegate of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) in Reynosa, explained that there are still doubts in the sector.

“Saturday (February 1) filled us with anguish. We spoke all day with customs agents, exporters, merchandise owners, warehouses, land transport, everyone was on the same page of uncertainty,” Zamorano said.

He said that a scenario with tariffs would represent a “fall in numbers, no one would want to export or import ,” he explained.

She explained how tensions had grown in the days leading up to the meeting. “President Trump’s position was very tough, but President Claudia’s response was also very tough,” she said.

For Zamorano, trade cannot operate with constant pauses . “Trump is not someone you can easily convince not to continue with tariffs. Much depends on what Mexico does to avoid it,” he said.

Along the same lines, Javier Abascal, CEO of Grupo Zonte , considered that Trump’s move follows a pattern. “Knowing Trump, knowing what he is like, I think he will just threaten. His scheme is that: threaten, go out and say things to the press and make everyone nervous,” Abascal commented.

In the midst of this scenario, transporters and logistics operators are trying to sustain the flow of trade before uncertainty becomes a definitive blow.

In this context and in light of the 30-day pause in tariffs, logistics specialists warn that the situation remains volatile and due to demand they have reinforced the offer of their services , such was the case of Pegasus Logistics Group , who in a statement noted that “despite the postponement, the situation remains unstable and companies must remain vigilant.”

For its part, Averitt , a cross-border solutions provider, highlighted the importance of strengthening supply chains through strategic storage by offering inventory relocation.

In light of this, some companies have already begun to explore storage options at strategic locations within the United States to ensure the continuity of their operations.

The question in the sector is clear: will this be just a temporary respite before a new onslaught or the prelude to a definitive agreement? The countdown to find out continues until March of this year.

Mexico’s prospects with the nearshoring phenomenon are very favorable. Installed since last year as the main trading partner of the United States above Canada and China, this relationship is expected to be further consolidated by the recent investments that have arrived in the country.

With an adequate reading of this situation, Averitt, with a history of more than 50 years and present in the commercial exchange between Mexico and the United States for decades, has made various investments in infrastructure to address this dynamic, such as its facilities in Laredo, Texas, and recently announced the expansion of its crossdock and a new warehouse in San Antonio, Texas.

“We have a presence along the border between Mexico and the United States, particularly in Texas, with positions in Laredo, El Paso, Harlingen and Del Rio. With our San Antonio facility what we do is move the border and offer an alternative with efficiently operational services,” identified Edward Habe, vice president of Sales for Mexico at Averitt.

In Habe’s perspective, these types of actions are aimed at preparing the demand for nearshoring , where according to the manager in two years there will be a greater demand for logistics services due to all the investments that have been installed. post pandemic and that will begin operations towards the end of 2025 or during 2026.

The facilities in San Antonio began operations in 2001 with a crossdock with 38 loading and unloading platforms. With this new expansion carried out, today it reaches 85 thousand square feet of warehouse, and in the crossdock area it will have 80 platforms , in addition to maintenance facilities and adequate spaces for operators with various amenities.

“This new warehouse is aimed at offering the best conditions to our clients and collaborators, in addition to being built with technologies aimed at being more efficient and with a layout that facilitates the operation of loading and unloading,” said Adrián Garza, commercial representative. of Averitt in Mexico.

This new warehouse, Garza highlighted, adds to the more than 800,000 square feet of storage that Averitt has in Texas alone, with locations in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Laredo, El Paso, Harlingen, Del Rio and Tyler.

With 80% progress, it is expected that the new San Antonio facility can begin operations in October, and be prepared for the increase in demand for North American trade between the United States and Mexico.

This warehouse has a strategic location just under 260 kilometers from the border between Mexico and the United States, as well as close to the I-35 highway, which connects from Texas to the border with Canada (Duluth).

Averitt has a relevant presence in LTL ( Less Then Truck Load ) and FTL ( Full Truck Load ) services , where they have experienced an increase in demand for services between Mexico and the United States, which is why the objective of this facility in San Antonio is to expand deconsolidation and crossdock operations in addition to those existing in Laredo and take advantage of the new highway corridor in Nuevo León with the expansion of service lanes in Puerto de Colombia, in Nuevo León, heading to San Antonio without passing through Laredo as an alternative, commented Adrián Garza

“With the presence of nearshoring , we have seen the dynamism in other industries in addition to the automotive and consumer industries, such as aerospace, electronics, medical equipment and machinery, which we seek to serve with this new facility,” added Habe.
