Ten years after laying the first stone, BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí has consolidated itself as one of the German automaker’s strategic operations globally and as a relevant link within the automotive chain in Mexico.

The story began in 2016 with the announcement of an investment in Villa de Reyes, San Luis Potosí, which aimed to transform the country into a production platform for premium vehicles destined for international markets. A decade later, the operation has accumulated investments of nearly two billion dollars and is preparing to enter a new phase marked by electromobility .

“Ten years ago, we began building a plant; today we see the impact of having built a community of talent, innovation, and collaboration that has contributed to the growth of San Luis Potosí and the strengthening of the Mexican automotive industry. The most important part of this story is not only the vehicles we produce, but the people who have made this project possible and the opportunities we have created together,” highlighted Klaus von Moltke, President and CEO of BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí.

Since the start of operations in 2019, the plant has produced more than 550,000 vehicles for export, integrating into the BMW Group’s global manufacturing network and strengthening Mexico’s position within the global automotive industry.

Among the manufactured models, the BMW 3 Series stands out, as well as the M2 and the 2 Series Coupé, the latter two manufactured exclusively in Mexico and exported to customers all over the world, in addition to the BMW M2 Racing and the BMW M2 CS, limited production versions.

Currently, approximately 3,700 employees are part of the daily operation of the plant, and it has also generated around 32,000 jobs indirectly, through suppliers, specialized services, logistics, construction, commerce and other activities linked to the value chain.

The brand works with a network of suppliers that has more than 310 production sites in Mexico , which strengthens national supply chains under the principle of local production.

As part of its global electromobility strategy, the BMW Group announced in 2023 an €800 million investment in the production of electric vehicles and high-voltage batteries in Mexico . This investment is part of a long-term commitment that increases the automaker’s cumulative investment in the country and represents a 110,000-square-meter expansion of the plant’s operations.

“The next stage for BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí will be marked by the expansion of its capabilities for integrating electric vehicles into our production line. This technological and organizational adaptation will allow us to further strengthen our team and optimize our processes in the face of an increasingly volatile environment. We are preparing the plant for the future, strengthening it and making it even more competitive in a constantly changing global environment,” emphasized Klaus von Moltke.

Starting in 2027, the plant will produce two models from the Neue Klasse platform, the BMW iX3 and the BMW i3, consolidating Mexico’s strategic role in the future of global mobility.

The plant’s evolution has been accompanied by a talent development strategy . More than 1,200 young people have participated in professional internship programs, and more than 570 apprentices have completed the Dual Vocational Training Program, inspired by the German model of technical training, with a 95 percent hiring rate.

“BMW Group’s vision has been to prepare new generations for an increasingly technological, digital, and electromobility-oriented industry. As a result, more than 110 Mexican employees have participated in international projects within BMW Group’s global network in countries such as Germany, Hungary, China, the United States, and South Africa,” the company emphasized.

Furthermore, during the last decade, BMW Group has promoted, among other actions, initiatives focused on education, community development, sports and culture , contributing to the well-being of more than 220,000 people in San Luis Potosí.

According to data from the municipality of Villa de Reyes, exports increased by 1,600% since BMW’s arrival. By November 2025, the municipality accounted for 42% of total exports and generated 30% of the state’s gross domestic product.

LEÓN, GTO.- The competitiveness of the automotive industry in North America increasingly depends on the ability of its logistics chains to respond to an environment marked by trade uncertainty, economic volatility and technological transformation, specialists agreed on the panel “The automotive logistics world championship is played in North America”.

Within the framework of the second edition of the Road 2 Logistics Automotive 2026 of the Industrial Cluster , representatives of the automotive and logistics sector pointed out that the region maintains structural advantages that position it as one of the main manufacturing hubs in the world .

“The United States, Mexico, and Canada are not separated by seas, which gives us a constructive advantage. We have highways, trains, and different means of transportation that allow us to move materials, cars, and finished products much more efficiently,” highlighted Roxana Castro, Transportation Control Manager at BMW Group ‘s San Luis Potosí Plant.

Anna Frank, Vice President of Purchasing at FORVIA Clarion Electronics America, believes that North America has a very favorable integration between logistics, manufacturing, and technological development, which allows it to be one of the most competitive regions in the world. However, she said that there are challenges in the supply chain , “especially connectivity, electrification, sustainability; all of that here we have the precondition to build a very resilient chain.”

In his presentation, Cornelius Goertz, director of PC&L and Aftermarket for Nexteer Automotive Mexico, pointed out that logistics has become the bridge that connects all the links involved in automotive production, from the supply of components to the final delivery of vehicles, and estimated that without this coordination, regional competitiveness would be impossible.

One of the central themes of the panel was the evolution of the just-in-time model , which continues to be fundamental to automotive manufacturing, although it now requires greater flexibility and resilience in the face of supply chain disruptions.

In that regard, Roxana Castro stated that flexibility has ceased to be a competitive advantage and has become an indispensable condition . She explained that companies can no longer focus solely on operational efficiency, but must guarantee the continuity of their operations in the face of any contingency. “We need efficiency, but without jeopardizing the entire supply chain.”

The panelists also emphasized that digital tools and algorithms allow for the analysis of variables that were impossible to manage a few years ago.

The conversation also touched on the role of smart inventories . Unlike traditional models based on static safety stocks, companies are increasingly using dynamic systems that adjust inventory levels according to component criticality, supply source, and market conditions.

“We really need smart inventories, because one component is no longer like another. If it comes from China, it’s different than if it comes from Taiwan, Japan, or any other Asian country. There are digital tools to anticipate and identify critical components, and based on that, we make the decision,” said Anna Frank.

The experts agreed that the strategic use of data allows for risk reduction without compromising efficiency . However, they cautioned that data quality remains a challenge, as decisions based on inaccurate data can impact the entire operation. “Data is key. It’s the most important element for ensuring an efficient supply chain, and therefore, smart inventory management,” Goertz emphasized.

Another key point of the discussion was the changing role of suppliers. The panelists emphasized that simply meeting delivery deadlines is no longer enough to be considered a strategic partner in the automotive industry.

Today, automakers are looking for suppliers that can react quickly to changes in volume, border closures, regulatory adjustments, or logistical disruptions. Adaptability has become as important a criterion as quality or cost.

“Ultimately, what we’re looking for from the supplier is the certainty that the production line will be able to continue normally. That even if there are road closures, changes in rates, or changes in volume, they have that flexibility,” Roxana Castro stated.

Participants emphasized that collaboration between manufacturers, logistics operators, carriers, and suppliers will be crucial to facing the challenges of the coming years.

One of the panel’s conclusions is that North America must strengthen regional integration, invest in logistics infrastructure, accelerate technological adoption, and develop specialized talent to maintain its global competitiveness.

It is worth remembering that in April 2026, exports of light vehicles manufactured in Mexico showed growth, totaling 286,317 units, which meant an increase of 11.4% compared to the same month of 2025, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

Meanwhile, from January to April of this year, 1,081,948 vehicles were exported, a 4.6% increase compared to the same period last year. The United States was the main destination for light vehicle exports, accounting for 76% , or 821,984 units. Canada followed with 134,245 vehicles , representing 12.4% of exports. These figures reflect the importance of automotive integration in the North American region.

The upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will be a key process for the heavy vehicle industry, which sees this exercise as an opportunity to strengthen North American production integration, according to Alejandro Osorio, Director of Public Affairs and Communication at the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Manufacturers (ANPACT) .

From the sector’s perspective, the review of the trade agreement could clear up uncertainties and strengthen regional competitiveness, especially in an industry highly linked to supply chains and foreign trade .

“We anticipate that the review may be complex, but we also see opportunities to strengthen regional integration and consolidate competitiveness in North America,” Osorio said.

The organization indicated that the industry is preparing to participate in talks related to the trilateral trade agreement, which could begin in March, at a time marked by changes in trade policy and tensions in international trade.

According to Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Economy (SE) , Mexico and the United States will begin a first round of bilateral talks on March 16th to review the USMCA, with the purpose of discussing the necessary measures to ensure that the benefits of the agreement accrue to both countries.

In that context, the sector considers it essential to preserve the trilateral nature of the agreement , noting that the USMCA has proven to be a key instrument for the region’s competitiveness.

“The treaty provides legal certainty and a framework for commercial operations to develop with free transit of goods, making the region more competitive,” Osorio explained.

The importance of the trade agreement is also reflected in the significance of the United States as an export destination for the Mexican heavy vehicle industry. In February 2026 alone, 7,849 units were exported , of which 7,015 went to the U.S. market , according to figures from ANPACT.

Furthermore, the industry sees opportunities to strengthen regional supply chains , attract investment, and develop suppliers at various levels within Mexico, from industrial components to technologies related to telematics.

By segment, tractor-trailer trucks registered 2,481 units exported, a decrease of 51.7% compared to 2015, while the other cargo category reached 2,595 units, with a drop of 55.5% . Overall, the subtotal of cargo fell from 10,970 to 5,076 units.

The total cargo and passengers exported in the first month of the year stood at five thousand 076 units, compared to 10 thousand 985 in January 2025.

Thus, the start of 2026 reflects a profound adjustment in the sector’s foreign trade, with widespread declines in both tractor units and the rest of the segments.

In terms of technology, production and exports maintained a traditional composition: in January no electric or natural gas vehicle units were produced or exported , so manufacturing was concentrated on conventional configurations.

Used: a flow that continues to weigh

While production and exports face a contracting environment, the import of used heavy vehicles continues to be a structural element of the Mexican market.

Between January and December 2025, 26,064 used heavy vehicles entered the country , a figure that represented a decrease of 14.3% compared to the same period in 2024.

However, the magnitude of the phenomenon remains relevant: for every 100 new vehicles, 65.4 used ones are imported , a proportion that maintains pressure on the renewal of the vehicle fleet and on the dynamics of the production industry established in Mexico.

The start of 2026 paints a picture in which domestic manufacturing and exports face an adjustment phase, while the flow of used units continues to have a significant weight in the domestic market.

The end of 2025 left the automotive industry facing an environment that demands adjustments and coordination in the face of emerging global and regional challenges. Consolidation within the sector and collaborative work among the various stakeholders will be key to navigating 2026, in a context that will require unity and adaptation, stated Rogelio Garza Garza, executive president of the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) .

According to the agency’s figures, light vehicle production reached 3,953,494 units in 2025 , representing a 0.9% drop compared to 2024.

In December 2025, manufacturing totaled 243,961 units , with an annual growth of 8.5%, which allowed for a partial moderation of the contraction observed throughout the past year, Garza Garza explained during the presentation of results.

Regarding exports , the CEO of AMIA indicated that just over 3.3 million light vehicles were shipped abroad last year, a figure that represented a 2.7 percent year-on-year decrease. For the last month of 2025, exports totaled 227,262 units, a 14.5 percent drop compared to December 2024.

Regarding the domestic market , Garza Garza explained that light vehicle sales grew 1.4% during 2025, based on information reported to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) . However, he clarified that, when considering brands that do not report directly to Inegi, the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) estimated growth of approximately 5% in domestic sales, a difference due to the scope of the statistical sources used.

Regarding 2026, he emphasized that the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will be a determining factor for the industry. In this context, he stated that legal certainty, clear rules, and a favorable investment environment are key elements for maintaining the competitiveness of the Mexican automotive sector.

He also addressed the tariff and regulatory measures implemented by the federal government, noting that AMIA supports the tariff modification decree announced by the Ministry of Economy , as it seeks to strengthen industries that invest and produce in Mexico. However, he pointed out that there are still no estimates on the specific impact these measures could have on brands from countries with which Mexico does not have a trade agreement.

Garza Garza emphasized the importance of continuing to promote supplier development and regional integration of the supply chain, as well as coordination between industry and authorities, to face the challenges of the international environment and consolidate Mexico as a strategic player in the automotive sector in North America .
