APM Terminals Yucatán  announced on Wednesday that it has strengthened its operational capacity with the addition of five Terminal Trucks , specialized tractor-trailers for container handling, as part of its efforts to bolster its response to the port’s growing activity and optimize its operational processes.

The units come from APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas and will allow for increased availability of equipment for operations at the Yucatecan terminal, a factor that is becoming increasingly important as demand for port services grows and the need to maintain the continuity of operations increases.

According to the company, the integration of this equipment will also contribute to strengthening the terminal’s operational resilience by offering a greater capacity to respond to increases in port activity, as well as supporting the continuity of operations.

The addition of the new Terminal Trucks is part of a modernization program that includes improvements to infrastructure, equipment, and processes. This strategy also aims to move toward greater standardization of the fleet used in daily operations, which facilitates maintenance, improves spare parts management, and promotes more efficient operations.

The awards, organized by AAPA LATAM and the Secretariat of the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) of the Organization of American States (OAS) , aim to highlight initiatives that strengthen sustainable development and port competitiveness in the Americas.

In this edition, Puerto Ventanas SA , from Chile, received recognition in the Port Performance and Growth category , while APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas , in Mexico, was distinguished in Technology and Innovation for the initiatives presented to strengthen the efficiency and modernization of its operations. Meanwhile, DP World Ecuador Posorja received the top award in the Public-Private Partnerships category .

At the XXVII Intermodal Congress of the Mexican Intermodal Transportation Association (AMTI) , port operators, shipping companies, and railway companies agreed that the true challenge for the Mexican logistics chain is no longer building more capacity, but rather ensuring that all links operate in a connected manner , with traceability and predictability.

During the panel “Infrastructure that connects: productivity in motion”, moderated by Francisco Fabila, general director of Ferrocarril y Terminal del Valle de México (Ferrovalle) , the participants outlined a shared diagnosis: Mexico has world-class port and rail infrastructure, but the lack of technological and operational integration continues to generate uncertainty for intermodal users.

“The challenge is not basically to create more capacity, it’s not to build more capacity than we already have. At good levels of productivity, we still have capacity, we have solid operational talent , and world-class infrastructure. I think what we lack is integration,” stated Héctor Espinoza, Director of Operations for Mexico and Central America at Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) .

The conversation revolved around a recurring concept: the customer no longer demands just speed, but certainty . Iker Allison, Vice President of Marketing at SSA Marine Mexico , one of the country’s leading port operators, summarized one of the industry’s biggest challenges: “The customer can tolerate a one-day delay. What they can’t tolerate is uncertainty, not knowing when their container will arrive.”

Following this logic, the panelists agreed that productivity is no longer exclusively associated with throughput or hourly transaction records at terminals. Now, the focus is on the overall user experience and the ability of the entire supply chain to deliver reliable, real-time information.

“Giving them the possibility at all times, from end to end, of that predictability and consistency is what we prioritize today,” Espinoza added, noting that traditional operational metrics have begun to lose relevance compared to the need to guarantee complete cargo traceability.

Daniela Silva, Chief Commercial Officer of APM Terminals Mexico , explained that one of the most demanded factors by intermodal users is precisely the constant visibility of operations . “Having real-time information, accessible 24/7,” she noted, “has become an indispensable element in modern logistics.”

However, the panel agreed that technology alone will not solve the supply chain’s structural problems. Although each actor has developed platforms, monitoring systems, and digital tools, the lack of communication between them continues to generate friction.

“If there were true interconnectivity through systems and the customer received a single response, then that would eliminate uncertainty ,” Allison stated. He noted that it is still common for a terminal to report that a container has already been loaded onto the railcar while the rail operator maintains that the container has not yet appeared in their system.

This disconnect is also reflected in customs processes . During the panel, it was highlighted that, despite advances in digitization, most users continue to experience delays and intermittent service on government platforms. “How can you provide a predictable, repeatable service when the system is down?” Fabila asked, referring to the challenges still facing the Single Window for Foreign Trade (Vucem).

The discussion then shifted to automation and the use of artificial intelligence within port terminals. Silva highlighted that APM Terminals operates the only 100% automated yard in Latin America in Lázaro Cárdenas , equipped with OCR systems and traceability tools developed both globally and locally.

“ Technology is another ally . Logistics never stops. So, creating tools that allow the customer to have 24/7 access to information is fundamental,” he stated.

For Fabila, technological advancements have already radically transformed logistics operations. “Today, logistics is a watershed moment in how technology can bring operational efficiency to our processes,” he stated, describing the impact of automated terminals and the use of artificial intelligence in cargo recognition and handling.

But even in an increasingly automated environment , the panelists insisted that the main bottleneck remains coordination between actors. “The development we may achieve as isolated entities means nothing if all the actors in this chain do not also increase their productivity,” Allison warned.

Meanwhile, the companies confirmed their continued commitment to Mexico with new expansion projects. Silva noted that APM Terminals recently inaugurated Phase 2 of its expansion in Lázaro Cárdenas, adding 65 hectares and new automated cranes, and announced a third phase focused on extending the dock by 420 meters .

“We believe that Mexico is a potential market and we believe in its development,” he said.

Despite a global environment marked by economic uncertainty and trade tensions, participants were optimistic about the performance of the second half of the year and the upcoming peak season .

“We are expecting a very good , positive peak season and we are preparing for that,” Allison commented, while Espinoza assured that MSC maintains a “very robust capacity” and a long-term commitment to the Mexican market.

The discussion also addressed the challenge of increasing rail’s share of freight movement from ports. Participants felt that the potential of intermodal transport remains underutilized and requires greater promotion of its operational and environmental advantages.

“There is enormous value in rail transport ,” Silva stated. “It’s about how we incentivize the use of rail by showing real advantages for the customer.”

Sustainability emerged as another strategic focus for the industry. SSA Marine highlighted that the terminal they acquired in Manzanillo was the first fully electrified terminal in the country, while APM Terminals stated that by 2026 it will operate with 100% clean energy in Lázaro Cárdenas and will develop electrification projects in Progreso.

Finally, Fabila proposed a change in perspective regarding the role of port terminals . “Terminals should be conceived as transfer spaces, not storage facilities,” he argued, maintaining that true intermodal efficiency depends on keeping containers flowing constantly and minimizing their time spent within ports.

Beyond the multimillion-dollar investments in infrastructure, automation, or expansion, the panel reached a clear conclusion: the future of Mexican intermodal transport will depend less on building more capacity and more on ensuring that the entire logistics chain finally operates as a single system.

The project, which extends the concession until 2044, seeks to transform the facility into a strategic hub capable of attracting more shipping companies, increasing operational capacity, and consolidating the region’s logistics focus.

“After a period of negotiations with the Yucatán government and the authorities, we finally reached an agreement for the modernization of the APM Terminals container terminal. We are beginning a new chapter,” said Victor Konen, general director of APM Terminals Yucatán, in an interview with specialized media.

The plan isn’t limited to new cranes or port infrastructure. It includes improvements to yards, telematics systems, surveillance cameras, and enhanced security, in addition to investments in a larger-capacity cold storage facility. Konen stated that the acquisition of two additional Mobile Harbor Cranes is planned , with a manufacturing and delivery process of up to 24 months. “We want more shipping companies to come, to have more volume and more vessels at our docks,” he emphasized.

Enrique Ramírez High School , located in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, was the tournament’s winner , defeating the Center for Technological, Industrial, and Services Studies (CETIS) #34 by a score of three to one. El cargo APM Terminals Mexico awards young people with a computer lab in Michoacán apareció primero en T21.

APM Terminals México , the specialized container terminal unit of  AP Moller-Maersk , reported sustained growth in total cargo throughput during the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25), as well as an increase in import cargo.

In this regard, the Lázaro Cárdenas container terminal in Michoacán registered a 7% increase in cargo movement, totaling 227,575 TEUs , compared to the same period last year.

“This performance positions the terminal as one of the most dynamic and strategic in the country,” APM Terminals Mexico said in a statement.

Regarding import cargo , Lázaro Cárdenas also had positive figures, with a 15% increase , equivalent to 76,832 TEUs , “surpassing the national average and reaffirming the sector’s confidence in the operational capacity, reliability and future vision of APM Terminals.”

Meanwhile, APM Terminals Progreso , in Yucatán, showed a positive trend, with a 1% increase in import cargo, reaching 15,224 TEUs .

The firm emphasized that this growth consolidates its role as a key gateway for trade in southeastern Mexico, “with strong logistical links to the United States, Europe, and Latin America.”

“These results are more than just numbers: they reflect the trust our customers place in us and our team’s daily commitment to delivering operational excellence. This growth also commits us to continue investing in infrastructure, technology, and talent to further strengthen Mexico’s logistics competitiveness,” said Beatriz Yera, General Manager of APM Terminals Mexico.

During the first four months of 2025, the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, one of the most important in the Mexican Pacific, registered  a 13% increase in container movement, with a total of 803,191 TEU , of which 31% corresponded to imports, 31% to exports and 38% to transshipment; in addition, it received a total of 311 container ships, according to figures from the Lázaro Cárdenas National Port System Administration (Asipona) .

For its part, the expansion project for the Progreso deep-sea port saw a significant increase in investment in 2025, going from 7.9 billion pesos (mdp) to 12.225 billion pesos , according to the Yucatan government.

APM Terminals México , the specialized container terminal unit of A.P. Moller-Maersk , signed a memorandum of understanding with the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM) , to support the professional development of students from the Merchant Nautical Schools of Tampico, Veracruz and Mazatlán of the Maritime Port University of Mexico .

The Dutch company, led in Mexico by Beatriz Yera, will establish an internship program so that students can apply their knowledge in real-world work environments and in a highly technological terminal such as the specialized terminal at the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas.

From 2021 to 2023 alone, almost 800 students have graduated from the three Merchant Nautical Schools of the Navy Secretariat .

“This is an example of the joint effort between the public and private sectors with the vision of strengthening the Mexican maritime sector and consolidating the country as a benchmark in port logistics with highly qualified personnel,” APM Terminals Mexico said in a statement.

APM Terminals’ Lázaro Cárdenas terminal took a momentous step in global maritime trade with the inauguration of Operation Gemini Cooperation in March of this year, featuring an innovative Simultaneous Transshipment Connection never before seen in the world.

This innovative double-handling model represents a milestone in port logistics, enabling the transfer of containers between vessels , optimizing time, costs, and operational efficiency.

APM Terminals is in the process of the second phase of expansion of its terminal in Lázaro Cárdenas.

This project, which began in September 2023 with an investment of more than $150 million, seeks to increase operational capacity and improve infrastructure with new cranes and specialized equipment.
