Nine years after receiving its first ship at the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, APM Terminals Mexico’s reflection is not nostalgic, but strategic. What is now one of the most sophisticated terminals on the Mexican Pacific coast began as a gamble that many considered risky . “From its inception, it was conceived as a terminal for the future,” recalled Beatriz Yera, its CEO, in an interview with T21. And she’s not exaggerating: it was the first with a fully automated yard at the time, a technological decision that, she admitted, “frightened many, even globally.”

That initial vision set the course. Automation wasn’t a luxury; it was the foundation for standardizing processes, enhancing operational excellence, and transforming the terminal into a precision machine. “If there’s one terminal in Mexico that has looked to the future from the very beginning, it’s this one. And it will continue to look to the future,” he asserted. The next frontier has already been set: to become the first terminal in the country—and possibly in Latin America—whose energy source is entirely green .

In mid-January of this year, the company announced that it had signed a contract with Iberdrola Mexico to supply the terminal with up to 95% of its electricity from certified renewable sources by the third quarter of 2026; while the remaining 5% will come from solar panels.

But the story of these nine years can’t be explained solely by infrastructure. It’s understood by how the terminal integrated itself into the regional dynamic. Yera emphasized that Pacific ports can’t be viewed solely in domestic terms. A significant part of the operation is transshipment , and therein lies one of the keys to growth. Last year, the terminal grew by more than 20%, driven by new regional services. It’s not just about handling imports, but about capitalizing on Mexico’s geographic potential.

Furthermore, the upcoming inauguration of Phase II of the APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas expansion project reinforces this logic. With equipment already installed, tested, and permits practically finalized, the expansion opens up capacity not only for the local market but also to attract more regional services and even consolidate Lázaro Cárdenas as a hub . “We aspire to be able to move around 1.5 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) this year ,” shared Yera, aware that the ramp-up will be gradual and will depend both on the macroeconomic context and the ability to attract more shipping lines.

Phase II of the project, scheduled to open at the end of March this year, seeks to expand the terminal by 65 hectares, doubling its operational capacity to reach 2.2 million TEUs , under an investment of 165 million dollars.

Reliability is another key asset. The CEO of APM Terminals Mexico noted that the Gemini Cooperation maritime service (a joint venture between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd ) in Lázaro Cárdenas has maintained on-time performance levels exceeding 95%, and the terminal has acted as a shock absorber within the shipping network, mitigating delays and restoring services to their schedules thanks to efficient and predictable operations. This consistency, coupled with automation, has even allowed for reduced turnaround times despite increased inspections.

However, Yera rejected the idea of an isolated terminal. Competitiveness, he emphasized, depends on the entire port ecosystem: pilots, tugboats, customs, carriers, and authorities. “We don’t see the terminal as just that,” he explained, describing the coordination work necessary for the supply chain to flow smoothly from end to end. One priority on his wish list is for the Lázaro Cárdenas customs facility to be upgraded to a Type 1 facility, with greater resources and operating hours that reflect the new operational reality.

According to official statistics, the port of Lázaro Cárdenas closed 2025 with an operation of two million 616 thousand 770 20-foot containers (TEU) , 8.7% above what was reported a year earlier.

Looking ahead, the ambition combines complete decarbonization, regional consolidation, and a deepening of the Lean culture that already permeates the organization. But above any KPI, there’s one word he repeats: safety . “If there’s one thing I always emphasize, it’s safety. Safety of people and safety of cargo.”

With nearly 1,100 employees across both terminals—APM Terminals also operates a mixed-use terminal in Puerto Progreso, Yucatán—and new training programs underway for Phase II, Yera summarized his tenure with a personal conviction: “This is The Dream Job . ” Because, he said, it’s not just about moving containers, but about influencing communities, foreign trade, and the future of a country. Nine years later, that commitment to the future has ceased to be a promise and has become a reality.

APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas will become the first port terminal in Mexico to operate on 100% renewable electricity starting in the third quarter of 2026, after signing a power purchase agreement with Iberdrola México . The agreement will allow 95% of the energy consumed by the container terminal to come from certified renewable sources, while the remaining 5% will be generated by solar panels that will soon be operational, according to a company press release.

The announcement places the Lázaro Cárdenas terminal in a unique position within the Mexican port system, not only because of the clean energy source, but also because of the type of operation it supports. It is a highly electrified facility , where the automated yard and some of the large-scale equipment—such as the cranes—operate entirely on electricity.

“The signing of this electricity supply contract not only represents a very significant step forward in our decarbonization goals, but also makes us the first terminal in Mexico to operate with 100% renewable electricity ,” said Beatriz Yera, CEO of APM Terminals Mexico , emphasizing that this distinction carries even more weight precisely because of the electric nature of the operation.

The contract includes the acquisition of Guarantees of Origin (GOs) , a mechanism that allows for full traceability and certification that the electricity supplied comes from renewable sources linked to Iberdrola México’s plants. This technical component formally supports emissions reductions and provides verifiable evidence for the terminal’s environmental strategy, in an environment where ESG (environmental, social, and governance) commitments are increasingly being evaluated by customers, shipping lines, and global supply chains.

According to the information provided, the use of renewable electricity will prevent the annual emission of approximately 6,500 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂), a figure that reflects the direct impact of the energy transition on a port operation with high energy intensity. Beyond the environmental benefit, the reduction in emissions translates into a competitive advantage in the face of the new standards being imposed by international markets and major shippers.

These actions are part of APM Terminals’ global strategy to lead the decarbonization of the terminal industry by accelerating electrification and the use of clean energy. In the case of Lázaro Cárdenas, the decision marks a milestone for the Mexican port sector and anticipates a fundamental shift in how investments in logistics infrastructure are conceived: not only as operational capacity, but also as platforms aligned with the energy transition and the sustainability of global trade.

APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas reported that it surpassed the mark of one million TEUs (20-foot containers) handled before the end of 2025 , a record that consolidates the operational maturity of the first semi-automated terminal in Latin America and, at the same time, intensifies the discussion about the sufficiency of the Pacific port infrastructure.

The milestone does not occur in a vacuum: it comes after the incorporation of a fully electric super post-Panamax crane in Lázaro Cárdenas just last October and the progress of the modernization program in Progreso, Yucatán – where the group’s second terminal in Mexico is located – actions that already revealed a strategy aimed at accelerating capacity, energy efficiency and regional competitiveness.

According to the company’s press release, the performance is the result of a “solid investment plan” that expanded dock and yard capacity , increased crane productivity, and optimized ground appointment scheduling. This integration allowed for reduced turnaround times and sustained consistent operations even during periods of high variability. In a context where congestion peaks have become structural, the strategy aims to protect operations from increasingly frequent disruptions.

The corporate message emphasizes that the progress is also based on technology and collaboration with clients. “This achievement reflects the effort and dedication of our entire team. Reaching one million TEUs is more than just a number: it represents the consistency with which we strive to operate safely, efficiently, and sustainably ,” said Beatriz Yera, CEO of APM Terminals Mexico , quoted in the company’s press release.

The statement attempts to position the figure as a turning point for the sector, demonstrating that growth can be orderly if there is an operating model capable of absorbing demand without falling into disruptions.

The magnitude of the increase, however, raises questions. For Lázaro Cárdenas, one of the country’s most strategic hubs, the brand reinforces its appeal to shipping lines seeking certainty and consistent lead times , but it also anticipates future tensions regarding capacity, connectivity, and logistics planning. The increase in volumes occurs while other regions of the country undertake parallel expansions, forcing the industry to avoid duplication and prioritize investments where they will truly generate greater resilience.

APM Terminals operates 60 locations in 33 countries, handles more than 27,000 vessels annually, and records 23.2 million TEU movements. In Mexico, the one million TEU mark not only anticipates a strong year-end but also reshapes expectations for the short-term growth rate.

The new electric crane reinforces the transition to cleaner operations, while the modernization in Yucatán demonstrates a commitment to diversifying capabilities and building a more robust network. In a market marked by Asian demand, manufacturing relocation, and pressure to reduce emissions, the company is sending a strong signal: growth is here, and the infrastructure must keep pace.

Although intermodal transport is growing, various infrastructure and process actions are needed to increase cargo movement, for example, from 25% to 80% in the ports of Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas alone .

Víctor Monroy Vollmer, general manager for Mexico and Central America at Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) , stated that the country has the potential to be a regional intermodal hub or node , but “it remains untapped, far from what it could be. It’s important to have a strategy for the proper development of the rail network.”

At the 22nd edition of ExpoRail, organized by the Mexican Association of Railways (AMF) , he considered that the routes should be expanded to other areas and not just to the center of the country or to Guadalajara or Monterrey, “we need them to be towards the northwest and south.”

However, the executive indicated that there are three challenges for intermodal: the structural imbalance in import and export corridors , “this often prevents us from designing better service structures. We have important industrial hubs that bring in a lot of imports, but most of the exports go to the United States.”

Another challenge identified was the limited port infrastructure, automation, and customs , security, import, and export processes, which are inefficient, necessitating modernization, technological advancement, and digitization.

He also mentioned that the lack of operators in the trucking industry should be a factor in shifting more freight to rail, “however, we have a shortage of transportation, operators, and an industry deeply rooted in road transport.”

He indicated that Mexico is an important hub for the shipping company, as it connects cargo from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which are loaded onto north-south routes or to South America.

“ For us, intermodal makes a lot of sense , not only for operational efficiency but also for environmental efficiency. We are also promoters of decarbonization in partnership with railway companies in Europe, North America, Asia, and Mexico. We are strongly pushing the intermodal connection of our freight network. Mexico is an important center for freight acquisition and a logistics hub for our container distribution, so the intermodal option for moving full containers is important, but for moving empty containers, it is even more so,” he explained.

For his part, Rodrigo Estrada, CEO of Canadian National (CN) , reiterated that the challenges are infrastructure, but also political will and industrial concentration , and from this perspective, the company sees great potential for intermodal growth in the Bajío region, where 90% of companies from Quebec are concentrated.

“Indeed, intermodal terminals in the region have been growing, and I believe they are capable and, in some ways, well-suited for growth. But we do see some challenges. We need to review and probably adapt to current legislation and regulations. Today, laws do not favor intermodal transport over road transport. This causes customers to feel a certain degree of uncertainty, and the other is a cultural change, such as making the customer feel confident in approving a service. I can add a third factor: coordination between the different logistics operators, customers, and authorities. There’s a significant challenge there,” he said.

John Sánchez, commercial director of APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas , said that intermodal is a fundamental part, a strategic link in logistics for all of its clients , and even more so because of the railway infrastructure to which they have access, but he assured that it is essential that the actors in the chain share a vision of efficiency and competitiveness.

“Infrastructure, technology, since a well-structured process is an incredible foundation for automation, and digitalization is the easiest way to achieve intermodal, this is where the challenge lies,” he explained during his participation in the panel Freight Railways, Modal Shift, Challenges and Opportunities for Converting Freight to Intermodal .

He stated that this mode of transport has the potential to grow at the percentages mentioned in the ports of Manzanillo or Lázaro Cárdenas. At the start of operations in the latter, through the container terminal, it was estimated that it would be 80% intermodal versus 20% road, but currently the opposite is true, with an opportunity for growth for intermodal through nearshoring (relocation of production lines), industrial corridors, and companies’ sustainability agendas.

Diego Anchustegui, president of the Mexican Intermodal Transport Association (AMTI) , noted that the benefits of this service include price, transit time, sustainability, safety, and capacity. Meanwhile, on the maritime side, at the aforementioned ports, it is more competitive compared to road service.

“Intermodal has grown at an astonishing rate. We’ve seen double-digit cross-border growth this year. The macroeconomic situation is complicated, but intra-Mexico has increased in recent years. Maritime traffic has grown, and services have improved significantly, but we also have much to do,” he emphasized.

LÁZARO CÁRDENAS, MICH. – APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas has taken a momentous step in global maritime trade with the inauguration of Operation Gemini Cooperation , featuring an innovative Simultaneous Transshipment Connection never before seen in the world.

This innovative double-handling model represents a milestone in port logistics, enabling the transfer of containers between vessels, optimizing time, costs, and operational efficiency.

With the launch of this operation, Lázaro Cárdenas consolidates its position as a key point within Gemini’s modular network , receiving TP11 and TP15 services, with a pioneering operation that not only transforms the way cargo moves through the port, but also places Mexico at the forefront of global maritime trade.

“What makes this operation unique is that, for the first time in the world, a simultaneous double transfer between two vessels is being carried out at the same terminal. We’re not just talking about a step forward for our company, but an achievement for the entire maritime industry,” explained Beatriz Yera, general manager of APM Terminals Mexico, during the opening ceremony.

This speech was reinforced by Vice Admiral Heliodoro Álvarez , Director General of the National Port System Administration (Asipona) Lázaro Cárdenas , who mentioned that this achievement not only benefits the port or the country, but also marks a before and after in the history of international trade.

For his part, Captain Manuel Fernando Gutiérrez, general coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marine , highlighted that the Gemini Cooperation operation strengthens Mexico’s competitiveness in global trade .

“This joint operation not only optimizes the loading and unloading of goods, but also increases the efficiency of the national port system. It reflects the confidence the private sector has in our ports and demonstrates Mexico’s potential as a world-class logistics hub,” he stated.

The Gemini Cooperation operation is the result of a strategic collaboration between the shipping companies Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd , and, according to Beatriz Yera, this transaction makes Lázaro Cárdenas a key player within a select global network.

“They chose us out of the entire American continent; there are only four terminals in this service network, and one of them is Lázaro Cárdenas. Every weekend, we’ll carry out a simultaneous transshipment operation. This hasn’t been done before; it’s the first time it’s been done in the world, and it’s going to be in Mexico and at APM Lázaro Cárdenas,” the executive emphasized in an interview with T21.

He stated that one of the key factors that made this operation possible in Lázaro Cárdenas is the port’s advanced infrastructure and its capacity to receive deep-draft vessels .

In addition, APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas is the only terminal in Latin America with automated yards , allowing for more agile and secure cargo management.

Likewise, the port’s geographic location and connectivity allow shipping companies to offer shorter transit times between Asia and the East Coast of the United States, the director of APM Terminals Mexico told this outlet.

In this regard, during the opening ceremony, Gloria María Huerta Ramírez, Director of Social Security and Employment Promotion for the Ministry of Economic Development of the Michoacán government, emphasized that the port’s rail integration represents a key advantage.

“A container that touches our dock can travel directly to the industrial heart of the United States or Canada without changing rail companies. This makes us more attractive compared to other ports, driving cargo arrivals, investment, and business opportunities,” he said.

Preparing for this milestone

The model allows containers from one service to be transferred directly to another and vice versa, without intermediate storage. This simultaneous connection streamlines the logistics chain, reduces costs for shipping companies, and optimizes transit times to their final destinations.

In this regard, Yera commented that this Gemini Cooperation operation has required months of preparation and testing , so the challenge was not only technical, but also logistical and organizational.

“Simulations were conducted with pilots, tugboats, and crane operators, in addition to multiple meetings with shipping companies and clients to fine-tune processes. We also worked closely with customs and port authorities to ensure the safety and efficiency of the process,” Beatriz Yera stated.

Two weeks into this operation, Yera noted that the operations have been planned. “Each ship is planned according to the destination, according to the weight of the containers, but one of the things we’ve learned is that if the ships arrive on time, we can deliver a smooth operation that meets the expectations of the shipping lines and end customers,” he said.

Expansion and strengthening of the terminal

To meet growing demand and continue attracting more services, APM Terminals is undergoing the second phase of expansion of its terminal in Lázaro Cárdenas.

This project, which began in September 2023 with an investment of more than $150 million , seeks to increase operational capacity and improve infrastructure with new cranes and specialized equipment.

“We are investing in new gantry cranes, yard support equipment, and shuttle carriers. In December, we received 14 new shuttle carriers, new yard cranes will arrive in May, and in August, we will add our eighth gantry crane. This will allow us to operate more efficiently and better respond to market needs,” Yera explained.

The expansion phase will be completed by February 2026 and will allow APM Terminals to handle increased cargo volumes and attract new transcontinental services.

APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas , the concessionaire of a specialized container terminal (TEC) in the Michoacán port, celebrated on Wednesday the arrival of the first vessel operated under Gemini Cooperation , the new maritime collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd that began in February of this year.

The orchestrators of this maritime alliance seek to serve the east-west container shipping market, offering space for the transoceanic transport of containerized goods that promises scheduling reliability exceeding 90% once fully implemented.

APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas indicated through a press release that it plays a key role in this collaboration by implementing the Simultaneous Transshipment Connection , a pioneering operation designed to transfer containers between two vessels simultaneously, reducing waiting times and maximizing operational efficiency.

“APM Terminals is pleased to support the Gemini Partnership, as it marks the beginning of a new era in global maritime trade, improving both connectivity and efficiency across key trade routes. For our terminal in Lázaro Cárdenas, this initiative strengthens Mexico’s strategic role in global trade and positions the terminal as a key gateway for trade within the region and across the Americas,” said Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals, an independent division of A.P. Moller-Maersk, as quoted in the statement.

Gemini Cooperation consists of 29 first-class services , complemented by a network of interregional services. These routes cover critical markets such as Asia-U.S. West Coast, Asia-U.S. East Coast, Asia-Middle East, Asia-Mediterranean, and Asia-North Europe, promising improved connectivity and reduced call times per rotation, improving transit times and reliability for the market.

Beatriz Yera, CEO of APM Terminals México, stated, “The ambition of the Gemini Cooperation is to improve efficiency and reliability on east-west trade routes. Our terminal in Lázaro Cárdenas will be one of the key terminals in this initiative, and most importantly, we are the only terminal in the Mexican Pacific executing the Simultaneous Transshipment Connection operation. Our significant investments in technology and process automation put us in a unique position to contribute to the success of the Gemini Cooperation. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening our customers’ supply chains with innovation and technology, while helping to position Mexico as a leader in global logistics.”

APM Terminals’ TEC in Lázaro Cárdenas is currently in its Phase II expansion , under an investment of at least $140 million, and where it will be able to count on an additional capacity of one million 20-foot containers (TEU), to reach 2.2 million TEU of capacity across the TEC by 2026.

The port of Lázaro Cárdenas is positioned as the second most attractive maritime hub in Mexico in terms of container movement.

According to the Lázaro Cárdenas port authority, by the end of 2024, the port achieved a 29% increase in containerized cargo handling, reaching a total of 2,406,980 TEUs across all terminals, surpassing the 2023 record of 1,869,293 TEUs.
