According to statistics from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) , the company led by Andrés Conesa transported 159,476.54 tons last year , which represented a 4.7% increase compared to 2024, when it reported 152,209.89 tons.

Conversely, the largest cargo carrier moved 81,114.16 tons, Avianca Cargo Mexico 24,886.48 tons, and Estafeta 34,008.72 tons during the period.

Andrés Conesa, CEO of Aeroméxico, commented that the company’s strengthening in cargo stems from the investment made in the fleet, particularly in the Boeing Dreamliner 787, with three new aircraft joining the company’s operations by 2026.

Furthermore, he indicated that their alliance with Amazon has positioned the airline in the national market, as well as the pharmaceutical industry, since they have the necessary certificates for the transport of this type of merchandise and perishables.

“They are different components, but air cargo has been steadily increasing. By 2026, with the three 787s, we will achieve more, although we have been pressured by prices, which have been complicated by trade issues and the tariff war that has lowered volumes. But we have defended ourselves with greater capacity to maintain a level of income that complements passenger revenue. We are a passenger airline, and cargo complements it; we are not a cargo airline,” he stated in response to a question from T21.

In the case of the domestic market, Grupo Aeroméxico transported 52,761.38 tons in 2025, which meant an increase of 9.9% compared to 2024, when it moved 48,012.6 tons.

Aeromexico Cargo reported that in recent years it has registered an average annual growth of close to 35% in the handling of e-commerce (electronic commerce).

Therefore, with the arrival of the Christmas season and the increase in purchases on digital platforms, it is preparing to serve one of the seasons with the highest demand, through a specific plan that seeks to maximize operational availability, and optimize its human capital, resources and infrastructure.

“This trend reflects Mexico’s growing participation in cross-border e-commerce, driven by global platforms and increased domestic demand,” he said in a statement.

To meet both commercial and operational requirements related to the demands of e-commerce and the sector in general, the company has a wide network of countries and solutions that cover diverse needs.

He said that Aeromexico’s fleet of 165 aircraft, which make up the belly cargo capacity (goods transported in the hold of passenger planes) , operates nearly 450 daily flights across 18 countries, with a presence in the main markets of Europe, Asia, North America, the Caribbean, Central and South America.

In Mexico, this subsidiary operates 35 domestic stations, guaranteeing the distribution of goods throughout the country.

“Aeroméxico Cargo’s main differentiator lies in its processes for accepting, handling, and delivering goods. Specifically for e-commerce, the main competitive advantage over other modes of transport is time, as air shipments are completed in 6 to 8 hours, including airport transfer and processing. This translates into effective solutions for operations with fast delivery promises,” he explained.

Furthermore, strict control schemes are applied to sensitive or high-value goods. It also invests in infrastructure to streamline its cargo operations, while through the integration, automation and digitization of facilities, as well as real-time tracking systems and end-to-end visibility, it aligns itself with the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) vision for smart and sustainable cargo centers.

Aeromexico Cargo highlighted that through its alliance with Amazon , whose main objective is to enhance the national air network as a key enabler in the promise of fast delivery, and since the start of operations in November 2021 , they have shown constant evolution, going from an initial limited scheme to a national air operation.

Currently, this collaboration makes a significant contribution to logistical connectivity in different parts of the country, strengthening the speed and reliability of the service.

“Air transport represents a strategic component within Amazon’s logistics network, particularly for high-priority routes and time-sensitive shipments, allowing for greater flexibility and operational resilience. It is in this context that Aeroméxico Cargo becomes a fundamental ally in guaranteeing Amazon’s delivery promise thanks to its punctuality, infrastructure, and service,” he stated.

With the arrival of the Christmas season, Aeromexico Cargo is implementing actions that include preventive maintenance tasks, pre-allocation of space on key routes , temporary reinforcement of personnel and increased inventory of supplies.

The growing demand for e-commerce has been one of the main drivers of growth. During 2025, the airline recorded a 20% increase in e-commerce shipment volume compared to 2024, and a further 10% increase is expected by 2026.

The airline will continue to invest in digital technologies, infrastructure modernization, and key processes to improve the customer experience, as well as to strengthen traceability and security, consolidating its position as the preferred logistics partner for the e-commerce ecosystem in Mexico.

In addition, it is promoting the opening of new routes for the transfer of imported packages with final destination in Mexico City, as well as increasing volumes on current routes through projects focused on first flights and “same day” delivery schemes.

Ten years after its arrival in Mexico, Amazon is celebrating much more than an anniversary. It is celebrating the consolidation of a model that has reshaped e-commerce, logistics, and the country’s consumer culture. With a cumulative investment of more than 145 billion pesos, the company has not only generated employment and technology but has also become a key player in the Mexican digital economy. However, the magnitude of its footprint also raises questions about the dependence of local ecosystems on a global operation that imposes standards and transforms markets

Pedro Huerta, country manager of Amazon Mexico, expressed it with a tone of balance and pride: “Amazon began operations in Mexico in 2015 with a clear mission: Amazon is for everyone, every day, anytime. In these 10 years, we have learned that growing together with Mexico means investing in innovation for customers, in our people, and in small and medium-sized businesses .” The statement summarizes a long-term strategy based on expansion, technology, and extensive logistics

The scope of that strategy translates into a network that today includes 14 fulfillment centers and 29 delivery stations, enabling same-day delivery in 14 cities and next-day delivery in more than 80. In 2024, the company generated more than 15,000 direct and 37,000 indirect jobs, in addition to another 11,000 induced jobs. “What I want is to create the best jobs in the country. Period,” emphasized Diego Méndez de la Luz, Chief Operating Officer, in a message that reflects the commitment to building not only infrastructure, but also a work culture based on stability and well-being.

The year 2025 also marked the beginning of a new technological era with the launch of the first Amazon Web Services (AWS) Region in Mexico, located in Querétaro. With an investment exceeding five billion dollars, this infrastructure positions the country as a nerve center for digital innovation in Latin America

Amazon’s narrative is anchored in the idea that its success drives a virtuous cycle in the national economy. Today, more than 27,000 Mexican small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) sell their products on the platform, 99% of which are local. “My role is to help SMEs grow,” explained Renata Arbizu, Director of Seller Services. “These 27,000 companies are in every corner of the country; some in large cities, but others in places where e-commerce didn’t exist before. Guanajuato and Chihuahua, for example, saw up to 13% growth in new SMEs joining the digital ecosystem.” Collectively, these companies generated 52,000 jobs and contributed 19.4 billion pesos to the national GDP in 2024.

Beyond the numbers, Amazon’s story reflects a two-way learning process. “Ten years ago, we faced significant logistical and technological challenges, and we learned from the Mexican reality,” Huerta recalled. This adaptation allowed Mexico to become one of the three fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the world over the last five years. From its beginnings as “a bookstore” to its current operation, the expansion has been exponential. “Today, many complain if the package doesn’t arrive the next day,” the executive quipped. “Consumers have increasingly higher expectations, and that forces us to be better.”

In 2025, Amazon also took another step with the announcement of 15-minute deliveries through a partnership with Rappi. This service, which will begin in the country’s main cities, represents the most accelerated expression of instant commerce, a field where logistical efficiency becomes a competitive advantage and a symbol of modernity. But it also raises questions about sustainability, working conditions, and the concentration of power in the last mile

The economic impact is undeniable. The 2025 Economic Impact Report indicates that Amazon’s investments contributed more than 29 billion pesos to the national GDP in 2024 alone, and that for every peso invested, an additional 1.1 pesos are generated in the economy. However, the expansion also redefines the rules of retail and pressures local competitors to adapt their models, often with fewer technological or financial resources. Amazon’s success, in that sense, also reflects the country’s digitalization challenges

In the cultural sphere, Amazon presents itself as a platform for Mexican identity, promoting programs like “Made in Mexico,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy , which now includes more than 80,000 certified products. “We want to be a window for everything made in Mexico,” Huerta stated. More than 3,000 of these companies already export to the United States, reflecting a new avenue for the internationalization of national entrepreneurship, albeit under the umbrella of a global corporation.

Amazon’s history in Mexico can be read as a metaphor for the country’s economic transformation: a decade in which technology, logistics, and consumption converged to redefine the relationship between customers, companies, and territories. For Huerta, the horizon is just beginning: “We’re thinking about the next 10 or 20 years, and I’m sure that Mexico will play a fundamental role not only in terms of investment, but also in continuing to learn from Mexicans and Mexicanizing Amazon to make it more relevant.”

The next decade will test whether this Mexicanization will be a true model of shared development or whether the speed of innovation will end up concentrating even more economic power in a few hands. For now, the legacy of these first 10 years is already written in the warehouses, data centers, and screens that redefined the way Mexico buys, sells, and connects with the world.

CANCÚN, Q. ROO.- Artificial Intelligence (AI) only makes sense when it is used to solve real customer problems and not when it is applied automatically. This was the premise with which Andrés Arias, Senior Manager Customer Solutions at Amazon Web Services (AWS) , explained that the company’s strategy is built “from back to front”, placing the customer at the center and not the technology .

This vision shaped various mechanisms that allow for rapid experimentation, correction, and progress. During his participation in the 4th DCT Conference – Quálitas Infinite Possibilities , Arias explained that many decisions are considered reversible, known within the company as “two-way doors.”

Under this model, 100% information isn’t required to act; a reasonable level of certainty is sufficient to allow for cost-effective testing and adjustments.

In practice, this approach empowers teams to move with agility, which is essential in an environment like transportation, where fleet management requires immediate response to risks and operational changes .

Organizational culture was also a central focus of his presentation. Arias noted that at Amazon, small, autonomous teams, known as two pizza teams , are formed, which concentrate the ability to decide, execute, and measure results.

This scheme avoids bureaucracy and encourages speed of response , factors that are critical to transferring innovation into daily operations.

Regarding the relationship between innovation and failure, he acknowledged that invention cannot be separated from mistakes and cited the example of the Fire Phone, a failed project that generated millions in losses for the company in recent years, but whose lessons learned were leveraged in subsequent developments.

Beyond culture and processes, Arias explained that technological architecture also plays a decisive role. Amazon has transitioned over time toward a microservices model , which allows for the creation of fast, scalable, and low-cost solutions.

This structure makes it easier for teams to work in parallel, developing services that can connect to each other through interfaces, without relying on complex integrations.

For the transportation sector , this type of architecture opens the door to AI solutions that adapt to the needs of each fleet and can be turned on or off based on demand, reducing failure costs and accelerating adoption.

Artificial intelligence, viewed from this perspective, ceases to be an abstract promise and becomes a practical tool for simplifying processes , improving decision-making, and strengthening carriers’ responsiveness.

In a country like Mexico, where turning on the tap and not finding water has become increasingly common, technology and digitalization are beginning to play an unexpected role in helping conserve every drop. What a few years ago seemed reserved for logistics operations or e-commerce is now applied to the care of a vital resource.

Smart sensors , cloud-based systems, and algorithms capable of detecting hidden leaks in miles of pipelines are now allies in the fight against the water crisis.

Amazon announced its first water replenishment projects in Mexico, based in Mexico City, Querétaro, and Monterrey , which together will return the equivalent of filling 130,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The initiative seeks to address one of the country’s greatest challenges: water scarcity , exacerbated by climate change and deteriorating infrastructure.

To achieve this, Amazon is implementing Amazon Web Services (AWS ) technology and solutions from specialized companies that reduce leaks, optimize pipeline pressure, and improve resource availability in vulnerable communities.

José Mario Esparza Hernández, Secretary of Integrated Water Management for Mexico City , highlighted the importance of this investment.

“This collaboration demonstrates how innovation and collaborative work between the public and private sectors can have a significant impact on the efficient use of water in our cities. Together, we are building a more sustainable and resilient future in the face of water scarcity ,” he said.

In the nation’s capital, Amazon tested a technology capable of detecting hidden leaks in old pipes and managing water pressure. The results exceeded expectations, with savings of hundreds of millions of liters in just a few months, so they are now working with authorities and technology providers to expand the program to more neighborhoods.

The problem isn’t unique to Mexico. Globally, up to 30% of the water supply is lost to leaks before reaching consumers . In Mexico City, the figure is even higher, reaching more than 40 %.

In this regard, in Mexico City and Monterrey, Amazon will work with Xylem technology to implement pressure management systems based on the AWS cloud.

These systems detect areas with excessive pressure in real time and automatically reduce it , which reduces leaks and allows for a more consistent supply for homes.

Meanwhile, in Querétaro, where the first AWS Region in Mexico was recently launched, Amazon will collaborate with Aquestia and the State Water Commission to install valves and controllers in 11 District Metering Areas (DMAs) .

Unlike traditional methods, this technology allows for immediate savings by adjusting pressure in specific areas , reducing losses without the need for extensive repairs.

According to Will Hewes, Amazon’s global leader of Water Sustainability, the three projects could conservatively save 2.5 billion liters of water annually , although initial pilots suggest the actual figure could be much higher.

“Water loss is one of the world’s greatest challenges. These initiatives show how technology and collaboration can make a difference in people’s daily lives ,” he said.

The projects in Mexico are part of a portfolio of more than 30 Amazon water replenishment initiatives around the world , and once completed, they are expected to return more than 14 billion liters of water per year .

Shannon Kellogg, vice president of Public Policy at AWS, noted that the company has pledged to be “ water positive ” by 2030 , meaning it will return more water to communities than its operations use.

“We’ve already made 53% progress toward this goal, thanks to projects like the one we announced today in Mexico ,” he said.

In addition to these community initiatives, the company is working to improve the efficiency of its own operations.

Smart meters and energy-saving devices have already been installed in more than 75% of its logistics centers in Mexico , with plans to expand to the rest of its facilities.

In Querétaro, AWS data centers are pioneers in the Americas by not using water in their cooling systems , a technological breakthrough that significantly reduces the company’s water footprint in the region.

“Our data centers in Querétaro are a source of pride because they demonstrate that innovation can go hand in hand with sustainability. It’s not just about growing our digital infrastructure, but also about doing so while protecting the communities’ most valuable resources ,” said Rubén Mugártegui, general manager of AWS Mexico.

On the other hand, as part of its corporate responsibility strategy, Amazon also launched a manual of best practices for water management through The Amazon Sustainability Exchange , with the goal of enabling other organizations to replicate and scale these solutions.

With these actions, Amazon reinforces its role not only as a technological leader, but also as a key player in the search for solutions to the global water crisis.

“At Amazon, we believe that technology can and should be at the service of major global challenges, and water is one of the most urgent. We want to demonstrate that digitalization not only transforms the way we shop and work, it can also make a difference in how we use and conserve our natural resources,” said Diana Francés, Director of Operations at Amazon Mexico.

Although Sánchez Trujillo described Nissan’s announcement of its departure from Morelos to relocate its production to Aguascalientes as “painful,” after nearly 60 years in the state, he said that the goal is to take advantage of the state’s strategic location to position it as a logistics hub for central and southern Mexico .

In this regard, the state administration, headed by Governor Margarita González, has managed to secure nearly one billion pesos (mdp) from the federal government to improve the highway system, with the goal of facilitating the movement of goods to and from the state.

A fundamental pillar of this strategy is the reactivation of the Cuernavaca International Airport , with a cargo vocation.

“The fiscalized area is about to begin to be established. Now, since all cargo transportation has been moved to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) , it is advisable, from half of Mexico City to here and the surrounding areas of Puebla, Guerrero, and even the State of Mexico, to distribute merchandise from Cuernavaca, Morelos, since we are two and a half hours from Puebla, four from the Gulf of Mexico, three from the Pacific, and with all the radiation towards the center-south of the country, it is a predominant location,” he explained.

The Secretary of Economic Development indicated that they will begin with shipments to Guadalajara, Jalisco, and Monterrey, Nuevo León. “We hope to announce the arrival of at least a couple of commercial lines by the end of the year, but we are looking to focus primarily on logistics.”

He specified that along the entire corridor from the airport, Xochitepec, to the Autopista del Sol, approximately 200 hectares have already been purchased , where a park will begin to be developed, primarily for logistics mobility . “Thanks to that highway and the 21st Century Highway, we have those possibilities.”

In this diversification of Morelos’ economy , e-commerce and parcel delivery giants are turning to Morelos. Amazon is not only exploring film productions but is also evaluating redistribution centers, as are UPS, FedEx, Estafeta, and Mercado Libre. This dynamic seeks to expedite deliveries to central and southern Mexico, reducing times and costs compared to routes from the AIFA (Mexico City’s main airport).

Sánchez Trujillo emphasized that these investments could mitigate the impact of Nissan’s closure, which affects 2,200 workers , 800 of whom are on temporary contracts, which expire in December, and the rest are part of collective bargaining agreements.

The official emphasized that a large part of CIVAC is being established with activity heavily geared toward the pharmaceutical industry , and noted that they also have requests from companies already established in CIVAC for potential expansion into the 40 hectares that the Japanese automotive company will be leaving behind, as well as for the arrival of other companies.

Regarding the economic impact of the closure of the Nissan CIVAC plant, which will take place during fiscal year 2025, between last April and March 2026, the official explained that they are currently evaluating the impact and reiterated the boost the state will receive, especially with a logistical focus .

It’s worth remembering that the CIVAC plant was where Nissan established its first operation outside of Japan in 1966, and according to the automaker, more than 6.5 million units have been assembled there since then.

Amazon Mexico and Grupo MARVA have reached an important milestone on their journey toward sustainability: the first half million kilometers traveled with a dedicated fleet of 100% electric heavy-duty trucks . This represents significant progress in the decarbonization of freight transportation in the country and consolidates Mexico as a leader in the electrification of heavy-duty transportation within Amazon’s global network.

This fleet, comprised of 30 electric units , is currently the largest operating fleet in the country . Its implementation is the result of a strategic collaboration between Amazon and Grupo MARVA , based on a shared vision of sustainability and social responsibility. Both companies have aligned their ESG (environmental, social, and governance) strategies to generate a long-term positive impact on both the environment and the communities where they operate.

A global commitment to sustainability

This effort is part of Amazon’s ambitious global strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across all its operations by 2040, a decade ahead of the goal set in the Paris Agreement . Through its Climate Pledge initiative , Amazon has invested in clean technologies, renewable energy, and sustainable logistics solutions around the world. The electrification of its transportation fleet is a key pillar of this strategy . Its operations significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contribute to improving air quality in urban areas, and reducing noise pollution.

Inclusion and equity: drivers of change

The transition to cleaner mobility also drives socially responsible policies. It’s an exemplary step toward gender equality: 50% of electric vehicles in operation are driven by women . This action reflects the commitment of Amazon and Grupo MARVA, enriching talent and diversity within the logistics sector, in addition to driving innovation and improving productivity .

Looking to the future

The half million kilometers traveled is just the beginning. Amazon Mexico and Grupo MARVA continue working on expanding their electric fleet in the country’s most important economic hubs, as well as on implementing new technologies to accelerate the transition to emission-free transportation. This commitment to sustainability, innovation, and equity positions Mexico as a key player in the global transformation of the logistics sector .

Algorithms have revolutionized the way businesses operate, and their impact on supply chains has been most evident, enabling automated decision-making, reducing costs, and streamlining logistics, as Amazon Mexico has done by using advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning models to improve its processes.

“The interesting thing about Amazon’s technology is that we’re always thinking about how to make things faster. We want to make same-day deliveries, and to do that, our algorithm or system ensures that the pickup route is as short as possible between packages,” said Miguel López, senior manager of Amazon Operations.

During the visit to its MEX3 warehouse , located in Tepotzotlán, State of Mexico, the largest in the region with 100 thousand square meters (m 2 ) and more than 1,100 collaborators , Amazon Mexico showed the capacity it has to optimize its logistics processes, using advanced algorithms, from the entry of merchandise to the warehouse to the shipment of the products.

Random stowage

One of the first steps in the fulfillment chain is receiving the product from the supplier and placing it on the shelves. In this step, Amazon uses a method called random stowage, which avoids the need to categorize products and is performed randomly by the inbound team .

Items are randomly placed on racks , where they are recorded and stored. In this step, algorithms continuously analyze inventory, storage capacity, and product location, ensuring efficient distribution without generating unnecessary trips for operators.

The next phase is picking, which is handled by the operations team, who are responsible for finding the products in the warehouse and packing them for shipping. When a customer makes a purchase, it is uploaded to the Amazon cloud and processed; the algorithm determines the most suitable distribution center based on factors such as product availability, logistics costs, and optimal delivery time.

After this step, called picker or picking , the algorithm refers to the location where the product is in the warehouse and with the order picker equipment it goes to the exact location where the scanner indicates the products to be sent in the orders are located.

Once the packages are collected, there are three processing streams: multi- products , which include orders that include more than one product for the same customer; single- products, which is a single product for a single destination; and oversized products, which, due to their size, cannot be processed through conventional systems and require another form of shipping.

After processing, the products are inspected to ensure they meet all quality specifications, are not damaged, and are the exact items the user ordered through the site.

To facilitate this process, Amazon uses a scanner that provides information about each item, streamlining verification and registration. Once the data is validated, the items are placed in containers for packaging and shipping.

Optimizing shipments

The use of algorithms has also optimized shipping, allowing for same-day delivery. When a user makes a purchase, the first item they select isn’t immediately sent for pickup, but instead is held for a specified period.

In addition, the e-commerce giant is also aiming for same-day delivery, to round out the customer experience.

Mariana Werneck , Amazon’s director of Direct Seller-to-Buyer Logistics for Latin America, announced that they will soon launch same-day delivery, a process through which sellers will determine within their own cities which regions they can apply this program to.

He added that this would increase sales conversion, as we will guarantee “same-day delivery to customers within Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and major cities in Mexico.”

Regarding Easy Ship, the specialist indicated that the goal is to offer a better experience to customers in order to increase sales.

“With the Easy Ship program, the inventory remains in the sellers’ warehouse, and we pick up those labeled packages. From there, they enter Amazon’s logistics network, and we are also responsible for the sale,” Werneck emphasized in an interview with T21 .

In this process, the seller only has to manage his own demand after receiving the purchase orders and preparing them for delivery.

At this point, Amazon takes over the logistics side so the seller can focus on other aspects of marketing their products.

“Amazon delivers very quickly; everything is managed by the seller. Delivery is fully trackable for customers in this program, and it offers a very competitive price,” he noted.

Regarding rates, he indicated that they will be reduced by an average of 16% in April, and emphasized that they will also cover returns, that is, reverse logistics.

“Our deliveries are 45% faster on average than when sellers make the delivery alone. So, it’s very good for increasing sales conversion. We have 600 DHL locations across Mexico for these drop-offs, which is ideal for SMEs,” he explained during Amazon Conecta 2025.

Mexico’s logistics market generated revenues of $174.9 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $263.8 billion in 2030, growing 7.1% between 2025 and 2030, according to consulting firm Grand View Research , highlighting the importance of the logistics channels Amazon offers its customers.
